  1. "Should Minnesota be looking for just a short-term answer to this equation" Great question. And I think one the most important questions going forward. I've posted often about top prospects staling out in the Twins system, but I invite you to guess-- when / if a current minor leaguer could start at SS. And this ties in with whether the Twins FO decides to "go for it" in 2019, or, as I guess, 2020. As I've posted before, signing Iglesias to a three year deal makes a lot of sense (to me) to improve defensive stats at both SS and 2B.
  2. Thank you for your post. I think a super-majority of people on this site would love to read a headline something like "Twins ink MVP Buxton to 10 year $400 million deal" in, say, 2021. I know I don't have the right to speak on behalf of "everyone", but, nonetheless, I am guessing that "everyone" wants Buxton to succeed. The truth is, absent 2 months in 2017, he hasn't. As I've posted numerous times, an extension now makes zero sense from either side. If he hits .190 this coming year in 35 games, both sides know what they have-- an injury-prone head case who can't hit a breaking ball. If, however, he wins both golden and platinum) glove and silver slugger, I concur the Twins should back the Brinks truck up to his home. There is just so much uncertainty, I don't understand why either side would want to settle now.
  3. I'm usually not a fan of multi-year contracts for FAs in their 30's. One reason is that I'm worried about blocking the potentially large crop of minor leaguers scheduled to come up over the next few years. But, if I'm reading these posts correctly, there isn't an obvious candidate to take over 3B. So, maybe Donaldson makes some sense.
  4. The article states: "There were some rumblings of a Seattle fire sale brewing" Jean Segura hit over .300 last year. And he's a SS. But the contract is hefty-- 14 million / year for 7 more years. Closer Edwin Diaz may be untouchable, but Alex Colome might be available. His arb salary last year was north of $5 million
  5. Thank you for doing this. I guess I have two takeaways. First, obviously Berrios had a better minor league career if one concentrates on WHIP. Roughly 1.0 versus 1.2-1.4 for the others. But, and I thank you again for this, we see the inherent difficulty in projecting anything from a pitcher's first 30 innings in the bigs. There is still hope for Gonsalves et al.
  6. Is it OK to feel a little disappointed in the overall results? WHIP's well above 1.2, low batting numbers. I understand SSS, injuries, but no one is exactly blowing me away.
  7. Kind of a tangential question, but thinking of the promotions throughout the year, what is the role of AAA? Is it a development rung above AA or a set of injury replacement players for the Twins (or both?)? Also, any minor league system that has a player like Rooker at #9 must be the envy of at least 25 clubs.
  8. Just curious-- what would Berrios's numbers look like both in the minors and then after, say, 20-30 MLB innings.
  9. I admit this is off topic, but does anyone know how other Twins are doing in winter leagues?
  10. I disagree with the contract extensions. It seems like the cost is paying full fare for what would otherwise be team control years in return for what? In Bux's case, one more year under contract? And in Berrios' case two team options? I concur with several posters that BOTH sides might prefer to wait (at least) one year--especially in Bux's (head) case. I'd resign Gibson. Even at market rates, he could still be traded in 2020 to a (rich) team needing starting pitching. But, overall, this was a fun exercise. I am curious to see the revenue reports, especially since attendance was below 2 million.
  11. But aren't the Pohlad's renowned for their charity???
  12. So, who is in charge of babysitting this off season? And what's the over / under on Sano's weight day 1 of spring training? 280?
  13. What a great way to answer the demand of all Twins fans: to bring back bring back Matt Belisle and Chris Gimenez!
  14. So, does he have to be put on / kept on the 40 man? Is it like a Rule 5 draft thing?
  15. First, I agree that the target is 2020 and not 2019. Second, I think resigning Gibson makes a lot of sense. Finally, and most importantly, a previous poster wrote: "when the most heralded prospects in recent vintage haven't consistently graduated to become what we thought/hoped they would be." When I look at the Top Prospects list and see expected arrival dates of 2020-22, I, on the one hand, fantasize about a youth oriented, very inexpensive, very competitive team in 2022. However, given recent history, I have to wonder how many / few won't actually stall out like Gordon, Sano, Bux, Gonlsalves, etc., etc.
  16. This may not fall directly under the title of a development, but I liked the results of the draft. If nothing else, Falvine can draft-- that's two in a row.
  17. So, what goes on in an interview? What kind of questions are asked (on either side)?
  18. Thank you for the article. On this site I asked who was chosen to go to the AFL. Your sentence: "Many of the top prospects in baseball are sent here to make a final impression for a call-up next year, but there are also many experienced minor leaguers on the doorstep who are evaluated for protection on the 40-man roster, or those trying to make up some development time after an injury" was the first response I've received. So, again, thank you.
  19. This is a great question. I agree that the Minors have some strengths and some weaknesses. But another question is: trade for what? Even if somehow one could package 3 AAAA pitchers for an ace, what would that buy? Maybe 2 years of control? In 2017 the Twins won 85 games and made the playoffs. This year, 85 wins would have put you 12 games out of the wild card, and even if the Twins were as talented as the Indians, they would have been swept. In short, even under the most optimistic scenarios, the Twins are a long ways away, and a single pitcher (ace) even with a WAR of 5 wouldn't make much of a difference. And mea culpa for being depressed.
  20. Great article. Thank you. I would rank the Twins' vacancy as the second most desirable after Toronto. TO has a much larger budget and two of the top 10 prospects. I hate to ask, but are any of the candidates mentioned in the article fluent in Spanish?
  21. Nick Anderson? In AAA last year he had K/W of 88/19 and a nice whip of 1.13 Might he be a sixth or seventh piece?
