As it stands, if Liriano gives up no more baserunners, it will be Escobar he would face to capture his second no hitter.

Wow, lot's of people think next years crop of propsects will be a let down since Trout and Harper have were called up this year, but those AAA numbers are insane. Parmelee's awesome stat line looks pretty mediocre next to some of those. Maybe I've never seen offensive statistics seperated by league, but it seems to me, usually the top A ball guys have better lines than the top AAA guys do due to the increasingly better talent pool at AAA.

Yeah great move, most managers wouldn't have the guts to pull this one off. Maybe even a better move. You don't need guts to pull that off, just the right kind of pitcher. That's why I can't understand why Alex Burnett gets brought into the game with runners on base. I was pretty disappointed his name was never mentioned in trade rumors in July. His stock was at an all time high though we can see it won't be long before he crashes.

I think I just heard the Oakland A's laughing at the Twins SS situation.

Kepler is destined for Beloit anyway, but you'd wonder if the WBC will have an impact on the decision where to put someone like Solbach who has another year of Rookie League eligibilty. Do these guys play in the WBC then sit around for three months until rookie league starts or do they hit the spring training scene and head to low A?

Surely the options for Ruiz, Cano and Wright will be picked up. With the lack of SS options, I'm sure the Tigers will pick up Perralta's option too.

An extension with two years left on the deal seems pretty unique to me. I wonder what he and his agent consider "below market" seeing as his current deal is way below market. Perhaps an extra year is going to pay $12 million instead of the current $7 million? Surely one could argue $12 is still below market for Willingham.

I agree the promotions are often undeservedly slow, but the Twins tend to draft college arms and HS bats. Rarely does a HS player make it to the majors in 2 years. However you would think a 21-year-old would make it once in awhile. As for Mauer, there was no reason he needed to spend an entire year at Beloit. He did just fine coming out of AA, but he probably would have been even more prepared had he already been in AAA which likely would have happened if he would have split a season between Beloit and Ft. Myers. I don't have a huge issue with how the Twins handle the guys from A+ ball up. The problem is Beloit. For some reason the Twins think every HS draftee needs to work out all their kinks in low A ball instead of using that level as a rest stop on their way to Ft. Myers where the real coaches and instructors are. Arcia got out of Wisconsin early last year and maybe that's a sign the orgainzation is ready to change, but forcing everyone to spend an entire year there turns it into a waiting room, not a development camp.

Yet another reason to cheer against the Yankees. People often discuss the importance of playing a position when it comes to HOF voting. No one really bothered to mention that Molitor was perhaps All-Star worthy as an infielder but didn't put up his HOF numbers until he became a virtual full-time DH at age 34. Edit: I didn't want that to sound like a rip on Molitor, he was a great ballplayer, largely underappreciated and rightfully deserves to be in the HOF. I just find it amusing that his best years happened during what should have been the downside of his career. Surely playing DH played a factor in that anomoly.

This front office better have a solid game plan concerning the outfield prospects very soon. Surely Hicks, Arcia, Buxton and Kepler are all going to get their chance, throw in Benson and include Revere and we've got a logjam. If this front office lets every one of these guys get significant playing time at the majors just to find out which ones will pan out and which ones don't, I'm going to be pretty upset. They have the advantage over the other clubs in evaluating these guys, they need to take their best educated guess on who's the future and who's expendable and not let the expendables get enough MLB playing time to flame out and lose their trade value. The Rays took Matt Garza off of the Twins when they decided Delmon Young was productive enough to get a great return but still expendable. The Twins need to soon identify their outfielders similarly so they too can get a Garza-like exchange when the logjam hits. I don't want to see three of these guys turn into pumpkins while the Twins are left holding the bag.

No way is Capps $6 million option picked up. If it is, it's time to clean house. The two million needed to resign him could be better spent, there is already going to be a bullpen crunch come 2013 and adaquate arms are already going to be sacraficed to make room. I'd rather fill the spot with a minor leaguer making league minimum, odds are they would be as productive and as healthy. Time to cut the cord on Capps; a year late but better than never. Gardy also says he wants Capps to be able to come back by the end of the year. Why? They have already made it abundantly clear there is no room for Slama or Guerra to eat up innings, why the hell would they want to waste them on Capps?
  12. nicksaviking
Escobar's already used two option years. If he's with the Twins after 2013, it either means he has been unexpectedly productive and the Twins never needed to demote their utility player, or he was so bad, no other teams want to claim him.

PA may be a jock sniffer, but his brown nosing ways get the players to open up to him. You'd learn more about Span and his attitudes toward the club and trade situations listening to him and PA's show once weekly than you'll learn from Souhan's 2nd or 3rd hand gossip. Someone above mentioned that Hick's is actually Span's eventual replacement, thus we should not be compraing the merits of Revere's defense over Span's. I think it goes further than that, as offensively Hicks also may be a more projectable replacement. He is a very strong OBP guy, as Span was during his best years. If Hicks' AA numbers translate at all to the MLB level, I would think his high OBP would cause the manager to put him ahead of Revere in the lineup.

The Orioles win just about every one run game they are involved in. I would think that is a pretty good indication that the bullpen is being managed fairly well.

Cleveland's fall was pretty drastic, but they had a good run. Unlike the Twins, after Cleveland's stadium was built they were always near the top of the payroll pyramid. They were still a top five payroll 8 years later in 2001; Minnesota is already out of the top ten three years later. I suppose Perkins might say the same stuff in a year or two.

The Twins also had Boras clients Kyle Lohse and Carlos Gomez but both were traded for as prospects not drafted. Additionally, both were traded again before the Twins had to worry about serious arbitration and free agency. Unless the Twins start matching payroll with the big clubs, they'll probably spend their money more wisely than on a Boras client asking for 2x market value.

Perhaps Arcia was an oversight. Perhaps after looking at his stats, MLB.com assumed the Twins had called him up long ago and his prospect status was terminated. Or perhaps MLB.com said to themselves, "Something must be terribly wrong with this young man, because there is no other explanaion as to why he wasn't in AAA after the All-Star break."

You could also argue his career lasted too long. He played 15 season, which in most voters mind is a full career. Had his blown out knee ended his career after his specatacular first ten seasons, he probably would have been considered with other players who's career was cut short by injuries like Sandy Koufax and Kirby Puckett. He likely would have been a shoe in had he never stepped back on the field after the 1971 season.

Like good agents, good GM's can use timing to turn perception. Whenever free agent rumors for Michael Bourn start heating up, Ryan needs to start floating Span's name out. No one is going to view the two as equals, but GM's that want a defensively plus centerfielder and leadoff hitter but don't want to pay the salary will look at Span. I'm sure his injury history will hurt his value, but desperate GM's overpay for less all the time. Trevor Cahill got the A's Jarred Parker and then some last year.

Nice time for a promotion. He certainly deserved it.

Not a fan of Escobar, even as a utility infielder people are going to get tired of the lack of offense very quickly. I also wasn't a fan of Parmelee and Willingham both in the OF, but truthfully Parmelee hasn't looked as uncomforable as he did when they put him in RF early in the year. RF at Target Field also really doesn't benefit a guy with a ton of range. Parmelee and Willingham together in the outfield is not a good long term plan, but I could live with it for half of 2013 or until some player builds up their value enough for a trade in turn opening up a more suitable postion for one of the sluggers.

I agree, I wouldn't have interest in trading Berrios as a PTBL. I guess my only point was that even if the Twins had pitchers to offer in the lower ranks, it's not Billy Beane's MO to acquire those guys. It's nearly always pitchers ready to join the A's rotaion the following season. Trading Anderson at this point does seem counter-intuitive, but Beane seems to always get someone to bite if he is inclined to move a guy. Cahill took a step back last year after his breakout 2010 season, and despite an unimpressive career K/9 and a pretty ugly 2011 WHIP, he was still able to snag a top 30 prospect for the guy.
  23. nicksaviking
Can we add Cole De Vries to the list of pitchers lacking stuff? Just about every article written on the guy prefaces his accomplishments with a line about how he has gotten to the big leagues despite having absolutely no decent pitches. Perhaps his Minnesota roots are reason enough to overlook his lack of qualifications.
  24. nicksaviking
That's a nice idea, especially seeing as he's already had the TJ surgery. It seems to me though that Beane always gets back at least one top pitching prospect back in return for his arms. Gio Gonzalez got Brad Peacock, Tommy Milone and AJ Cole, Trevor Cahill somehow got Jared Parker, Dan Haren got Anderson, Mark Mulder got Haren and Tim Hudson got Dan Meyer. The Twins don't have much in the way of top pitching prospects. Kyle Gibson might qualify, but even someone like JO Berrios may not interest the A's as the previously mentioned top prospects were all MLB or near MLB ready aside from Cole. On a side note, thus far Beane only missed on Meyer. That track record is unbelievable, and really makes me fear getting fleeced.

Ryan's mention of Slama getting his chance sounded like the GM was implying he was planning on adding Slama to the 40-man. I'm suspicious that he will, but that slick-tounged good ol' boy did make a couple of convincing points. With his injury history, including recently, it may benefit Slama to end his season now. Also, while he didn't come out and say it, his remark about how the fans only see the numbers may have been his passive way of saying what many have said before. His lack of movement and lack of velocity may not play well in the majors. If he came right out and said just that I'd respect the honesty more, but even so, there's still only one way to find out if his stuff translates to this level.
