  1. His stats are all over the place. He's batting .429 with 6 RBI in 7 PA with the bases loaded. He's batting .750 with 6 RBI in 7 PA with runners on 2nd and 3rd. On the other hand he's batting .286 with runners on 1st and 3rd and .077 with runners on 1st and 2nd. Another observation is he has 78 PA with RISP, meanwhile Ryan Doumit has 103 PA with RISP despite the fact that Doumit has nearly 80 fewer PA overall than Mauer. Morneau has 104 PA with RISP despite having nealy 40 fewer overall PA. It's possible it's just a small sample size issue? 78 PA generally isn't a lot to base an arguement on, though it is a start.
  2. Why? There was really only one post that could be considered Mauer-negative? His lower success with RISP is a valid issue that certainly should be explored. Considering Mauer is among the league leaders in doubles, you'd think this number would be higher, so there may be an underlying issue. On the other hand, this figure is the percentage of baserunners, not baserunners in scoring position. Mauer is batting in the #2 hole now, the guys getting on in front of him in the #1, #9 and #8 holes are more likely to be on 1B as they are singles hitters (well hitters is a questionable word). Additionally, these batters are likely to produce outs, meaning Mauer is often up with 2 outs, rendering any chance for a sacrafice fly futile. As mentioned, Mauer is near the top of the league in doubles, the guys batting behind him have often had Mauer on 2B for them to drive in.
  3. Trade away if you ask me, but this "depth" throws a little wrinkle into the situation. The team likely wouldn't be looking to move them for another Hernandez type; there would be no room.
  4. I was thinking Colabello.
  5. Ha, I think this was unintentional, but oh very hilarious considering the recent Forbes article. Twins pay their taxes. Zing!
  6. I thought they were shorter because weening infants off milk in favor of beer stunts their growth.
  7. How Close Ben Revere Has Come | FanGraphs Baseball Jeff Sulivan at Fangraphs wrote a pretty damn funny piece about Revere's inability to hit a HR. This quote from Revere got me: “I went back to look at what I like to do. I looked at things in the minor leagues to see how my set-up was because I had more power then. Now it kind of faded off.”
  8. Smith made some disasterous trades, but Ryan didn't leave him with a full cupboard. The cupboard was pulling out of the wall and was hanging on by one sheetrock anchor while half the dishes were about to spill out. Smith would not have been forced to trade Santana had Ryan not mismanaged the first extension. You have to be pretty short-sighted to only extend a 26-year-old Cy Young winning lefty four years. The Garza/Young trade was also lopsided but the Twins may never have gone after Young had Hunter been extended as he had been lobbying for the offseason prior to his free agency. Ryan left a mess to clean up. Smith too made a mess but had at least put the cupboard back on the wall and began stocking it again. Edit: Ha sorry for my contribution! I was reading the posts and wasn't paying attention to the thread topic. Trade Perkins for a huge haul. Love him but his position is expendable.
  9. No I wouldn't call his overall game a bust at all. I was simply referring to his individual at bats. He's a high HR, high K kind of guy. Boom or Bust. Hicks has a nice 7 game hitting streak including 4 multi-hit games and 8 RBI over that stretch extending his league lead in that department. Hicks now has 81RBI on the season pulling away from teammate Adam Walker who is now 12 behind. 19-year-old middle infielder Jorge Polanco is now 3rd. These guys really should be in Ft. Myers.
  10. "Yasiel Puig's arrogance not a bad thing" Yeah, that wouldn't fly around here. We'd hear open complaining to the media from the manager the first time he didn't run out a groundball.
  11. Nice post. I actually just wondered in the Fire Gardy thread about getting feedback from former pitchers to find out why their K numbers decrease in a Twins uniform. I had not heard this complaint from Marquis before and had not seen Liriano's new approach analyzed.
  12. And there was more room anyway. It is just not being used. The decision on Morneau better 100% be based on 25-man roster management and not money. There is plenty of money.
  13. I too often wonder what it is that causes this. The numbers generally aren't that swayed but it's enough to see a pattern, even if minor. It's not like you can find many examples of the pitchers numbers improving with the Twins, Santana and his injury issues being an exception. Perhaps it is simply seeing a pitcher a couple times a game in the NL. It would be nice to get some interviews with the pitchers themselves to see if they can explain why this happens. PS: Add Carl Pavano and Matt Capps to your list also
  14. Then don't. It was less about bringing TR back and more about trying to cover up the massive mess that Bill Smith made. Of course as discussed many times here, Bill Smith is largely to thank for the state of the farm. Most of the international signings were his and the team only got Buxton and Stewart because they were terrible.
  15. DeVries overacheived, but Slowey and Blackburn were top 100 prospects as was Perkins as a minor league starter. I wouldn't qualify them as overacheivers, for a short while they performed as expected then regressed significantly.
  16. The lack of ambition to acquire strikeout pitchers is systematic. Anderson likely has little to be blamed for either considering the GMs of this club continue to give him nearly nothing to work with. Still, if you have bad pitchers you need someone who can coach them to mediocrity and Anderson has not done that. He's in the same boat as Gardenhire, it might not be his fault, but he's clearly not part of the solution. If you can't coach your guys to overachieve once in awhile, you're not one of the top coaches in the league. Or if you were at one point, your message has likely gone stale.
  17. Yeah, I've been in the camp that Ryan needs to go. Another GM should decided Gardy's fate though it would likely be the same.
  18. What are you talking about, everybody agrees with you, Gardy needs to resign. Perhaps you could help him with his resignation letter.
  19. Ryne Sandberg played with Kevin Tapani and his GM was Andy McPhail. He clearly has a Twins affiliation. I'd still interview him though.
  20. Must be nice to be rich. Bats don't grow on trees you know.
  21. Well does the TB dugout have internet acces? Because Baseball Reference could tell him that prior to this blow up, Pelfrey's 6th inning ERA is 15.26 and batters have a 1.177 OPS against him. Edit: Of course the dugout doesn't have internet access, they still use phones that have cords attatched to them. Still, seems like something you might research pre-game.
  22. If we must go within the organization, I'd choose Molitor too. However I would prefer an outside presence. Things are stale with this club, and it's not just because of Gardenhire. If the team won't spend on free agents, put that money into the GM position. Go buy Andrew Freidman, he only goes year-to-year with his deal in TB. Make him an offer he can't refuse. He might promote former TB front office mate Gene Glynn. That would be some continuity that some people crave.
  23. The 6th inning is to Mike Pelfrey what Ike Turner is to Tina Turner.
  24. When are these guys going to learn to stop marrying strippers?
  25. Can I count this as a call if it happened three innings too early?
