  1. That's a very vague gameplan. I think you are missing the point. As Ox said, the Astros and Marlins went scorched earth on their roster and clensed it of nearly all vetran filler that was taking up roster spots and taking away playing time from young players. From this point forward it's go young or go home for them. The Cubs spent big on international free agents and signed a bunch of pitchers on short term deals in the hope of flipping them for more prospects. The Twins don't seem to be following a plan. Sitting on your hands does not cut it. The Twins have a handful young players up playing meaningful ball but they mostly have a bunch of veterans and older journeymen minor-leaguers. Ryan Doumit is still starting most days, a rebuilding team doesn't do that. Many of these vets/filler look to be competing for roster spots next year despite the fact they do not look to be a possible solution for the long term. A rebuilding team should not have this many players ages 27 or older on the roster. No the Twins do not seem to have a clear game plan other than blind faith in the prospects.
  2. Agreed. Ryan himself says he doesn't feel free agents can help the Twins rebuild and he wants to do it with prospects. Well how do you get prospects? The draft and through trade. The Twins have next to nothing to trade right now, so use free agency to sign guys who have a possible profile of a tradable asset. Noodle armed swing men like Kevin Correia never had a chance of bringing back a return. The Yankees couldn't get anything for Hughes this season but he does have the pedigree and name where a turnaround season would give him considerable trade value. There are plenty of players on the market who may not be able to singlehandedly turn the club around in 2014 but will be valuable to competitive teams come next July. Of course the Twins still may have to be willing to eat some salary.
  3. For a lot of Twins fans, getting rid of Anderson as opposed to Liriano was the preferred option. I would like to point out that if we are basing the argument on WAR, Baker would have been a better signing than Pelfrey.
  4. Let's go outside the organization with a former hispanic catcher. Sandy Alomar Jr. or Pudge Rodriguez. Let's get some Latin leaders with the current group of young international players coming up.
  5. Young nurse agrees with him.
  6. We shouldn't, but we then also shouldn't ignore the Pohlads' vocal affirmation that the Twins do not have any financial limitations. In that scenario, the only limitations are the GM's ability or willingness to use those resources.
  7. The fans will always come back and the Pohlads know it. The end years at the Metrodome were packed despite the emptiness which allowed my unimpeded ability to snag seven batting practice balls one game I went to in the late 1990's. I went to a game once where the promotion was to give away unused tickets to Eric Milton's no-hitter because they actually had tens of thousands left that they did not issue.
  8. Everybody wants that but a talented winner is still better than a hard working loser. Don't kid yourself into thinking that if ARod helped this team win a World Series that we would refuse to accept it due to his lack of integrity. It's frustrating that people think this philosophy is unique to the Twins. EVERY manager and GM want hard working and talented players and would prefer to not have to work with large egos. But that's life, everyone else in America has to put up with jerks, drama queens and slackers at work, why should Ron Gardenhire be the exception?
  9. I actually would disagree. Last year Ryan complained that free agents didn't want to come to Minnesota. Many people around here didn't buy it, believing that Ryan simply didn't put the best offers out there. If Ryan was being honest last year (or partially honest) then the Twins need to be out front this year with a big sign saying "Open For Business." It's going to take an image change to attract free agents. If free agents don't want to come here due to the losing, the Twins need to be advertising that the culture has changed and they are willing to do what it takes to win. Cleveland did it last year and they didn't have trouble courting free agents.
  10. I don't think you guys are as far apart as you might think. I agree with nurse that there is plenty of blame to go around. However I don't think that just because one person can't be saddled with all the blame that everybody gets away with it. In the judicial system that's why they have a charge of accessory. Five guys don't get to all stand around a dead body each pointing a finger at the guy next to them and walk away free. They were all there, they were all involved so everyone is getting cuffed. I know it's callous but that's why I want an entire regime change. If we cannot be sure who is most culpable, it's time to hedge our bets and just start over.
  11. GM's don't generally win a battle of wills with the owner.
  12. All the losses makes it look like they are tanking, but I really can't see that being the case. The White Sox, Cubs, Twins and Mariners all have managers who are in jeopardy of losing their jobs. While the GM may secretly want to lose for better draft picks, the manager surely doesn't, and while the GM has say on who is on the roster, the manager still gets to decide who plays. About the only play the GM has at this time of year to undermine the team, is screwing with who gets a September call up. I think the losing has more to do with some really, really awful teams ending the season playing some really good teams that are still fighting for playoff spots. Additionally, many of the awful teams are playing young players to gain experience and evaluate their usefulness next year regardless of whether they are ready for the MLB or not.
  13. John be honest, that wasn't the first time you had to apologize the next morning was it?
  14. I guess we have a difference of opinion on filler. The Red Sox gave Victorino, Napoli and Drew a higher per year deal than any external free agent has ever gotten from the Twins. David Ross and Johnny Gomes would likely be similar filler but filler seems a lot more forgivable when you already have a solid team around them. I don't think Ross and Gomes improve the 2013 Twins much if at all.
  15. No disagreement other than perhaps with the idea that $10M per year maybe isn't such a fat contract considering he'd only be the second highest paid guy on the team. Either way they do it, I'll applaud them if they spend their money on a few actual upgrades as opposed to spreading it out to a bunch of filler as they have in years past.
  16. That would be great, but to be able to sign him, the Twins would likely need to take a college player in round one. At this stage of the game, Gatewood or Kolek probably wouldn't enable another high profiled HS kid in round two. Edit: Ha, this level of speculation in September really seems silly.
  17. Those statements completely contradict each other. Any GM who goes the later route with a top 5 pick needs to be removed from his duties. While I am critical of Ryan, I do not believe he would actually do that with a #4 or #5 pick.
  18. $1. I think it's 50-50 at this point.
  19. I think Pinto is a below average defensive catcher but I'm not sure I totally buy into the pitch framing metrics. It just doesn't take into account the human factor in regards to the man standing behind the catcher. For instance, doesn't an umpire already have a preconcieved notion that Trevor May has a hard time finding the strike zone long before the pitch even reaches the catchers glove?
  20. Now hold on a second, I believe the city of Oakland (and the territorial concsious Giants) say the Collesium is just fine and the A's don't need new digs in San Jose.
  21. Agreed. Plus he's on the wrong side of 30 with bad legs. If the Twins had more young pieces set in stone he might be a decent 1-2 year veteran pressence, but the Twins need to get younger as it is. He might be a better signing in 2015 if the Twins have a roster full of players under 26 all with defined roles and positions.
  22. And every one of those managers is on the hot seat, which means they actually have incentive to put the best team on the field. Pretty sad there's such a talant gap with the bottom tier teams.
  23. So let me see if I'm reading the box score correctly, the Twins managed zero hits after the second inning and somehow won the game? Madness.
  24. Yes, you didn't miss much except for a huge swelling of national pride in the form of Hollywood/US government propaganda. Basically Rocky ended the Cold War all by himself. He punched Russia into submission. Spoiler alert: We won! Die Commies! If you are curious about which Rocky movies are the best, you can figure it out by reading the titles. They are ordered best to worst based on their numerical values.
  25. Nope that's Rocky V and the random dude was former heavy-weight champ Tommy Morrison who just died from complications from AIDS. I'd get tested if I was Rocky.
