  1. Yup, there have been some bad trades, but I'll remember this as one that ruined my childhood. I cried when we watched the news and this was reported. I'm not sure I should admit that though, I was already 10 after all. Nice first post, and even nicer handle. I'm totally for nicknaming Deduno "The Dude."
  2. Kubel on a minor league deal was a pretty good bargain, probably one of the best of the offseason. Still, I don't know that anyone is really counting on him other than Gardy, who likely is happy with the familiarity and the veteran status. It's TBD if Ryan is counting on him. After all, Ryan has a $2 million incentive to not bring him north with the club right out of the gate. If all things are equal and that last roster spot comes down to Kubel or Parmelee, Parmelee probably has the edge. You don't lose Kubel if you send him to Rochester, and you save having to pay a hefty bonus.
  3. I guess from my perspective, "odd" seems to be the key descriptive term to the catching configuration around here most years. Not that I'm endorssing the move.
  4. Like a Chippendale dancer? Diamond certainly does sound like a burlesque show stage name but he's probably got to change his first name to something more catchy. Ace Diamond. Maybe Jack.
  5. The Brewers picked Wei-Chung Wang in the Rule V and he'd only pitched in Rookie League. It's a little different situation than Kepler, but there's still a risk of losing him. The terrible teams these days acknowledge they are rebuilding, there's a chance that a team like the Marlins would grab a guy they knew couldn't help this year, the Twins did it with Johan Santana after all, he had never pitched above A ball. I know if another team left a high ceiling prospect available to snag, I'd campaign for the Twins to keep a spot open for him. After all, how much are you truley losing having dead weight in Kepler on your bench instead of Mastroianni, or Clete Thomas or Wilkin Ramirez?
  6. You may be giving the bench too much credit. You may have to substitute Herrmann for Fryer.
  7. And supplying them with the road map that was missing the "bridge out" warning. I always blamed Ryan for the mess and didn't want him back in charge, mostly because I thought he couldn't change his stripes. However, he seemed to just that this offseason. He was agressive, he took pitching serisously and he took chances on risky long term deals with better quality veterans. I'm giving him a pass at this time. I can't really critique his conservative ways and ask for him to change then not acknowledge the very likely possiblity that he did.
  8. I may not be on the same page as Willihammer but it's not that he needs to have power so much as he needs to have as many avenues to contribute as possible. Mauer was an assumed 5 tool prospect. He has turned out to be a great pick even though the power and speed didn't develop. His hit tool is great and he was a great defensive catcher for a long time. He's good despite only hitting on 3/5 of his tools but I'd imagine he'd be considered a bust if he'd only developed 2. Going into the draft, if a guy only has three tools, he's going to have to hit on all of them. It could happen and he could play at his ceiling like Elvis Andrus, but the odds are likely against all three tools being as advertised. However scouts may change their mind on Turner. They may end up believing he will hit well at the next level and/or develop some sneaky power. I'd be fine with a projection of lots of XBH and 10-15 HR if he can get on base. I'd take a Dustin Pedroia type at SS any day.
  9. I'm not sure Pelfrey is on this club in 2015 anyway. Meyer, Gibson and May are all going to be given a chance sometime between now and 2015. I'd guess both Correia and Pelfrey are trade bait come July and Pelfrey would be a trade candidate next off season regardless.
  10. I'm with you. At #5 I want a 4-5 tool guy, not a 3 tool guy, even if he's a shortstop. The less tools, the less ceiling. There's just so much less margin for error if one of the assumed tools doesn't pan out.
  11. I think I find every name listed in this thread culpable, but as acknowledged, Smith was a number cruncher. Where were Rob Anthony and Wayne Krivsky during these trades? These guys were supposed to know better. Weren't they expected to whisper in Smith's ear as he did not have their baseball accumen? They should have known you don't trade players at keystone positions for relief pitchers. And these are the guys expected to take the reigns eventually?
  12. I don't disagree, I'm game for that deal, it just seems very un-Twinlike.
  13. Keep piling on guys. Nice. I clearly stated that I wasn't judging the method. I was just clarifying what I believed to be the root of the dissent among some fans, that being many fans would prefer the Twins go stronger after the Latin players, who generally go early.
  14. I like the train of thought, but it just doesn't seem to work for sports, particularly baseball. Otherwise there'd never be a reason to sign Kurt Suzuki, Jamey Carroll or even Matt Guerrier to a minor league deal. Although I suppose one could argue not to sign any of the above.
  15. It can't be top heavy, the Twins missed out on Bartolo Colon.
  16. I think the reports I hear expect him sometime in June if all goes well. I'm not sure how the rehab time table works though. To me it seems odd a guy would be throwing off the mound now if he won't be rehabilitated enough to pitch for another four months or so.
  17. I love the PST. There's always a few that aren't as preposterous as Common suggests, mostly due to his unfamiliarity with some aspects of various sports. Still, most are quite rediculous, and sorry to say, but John's "top heavy" rotation statment is pretty funny.
  18. After a week in the majors I'm not sure agent, fan or ballclub will be able to deterine if he's Trout-like. To clarify, Dave's three buyout years are $19 mill on average, not collectively.
  19. But isn't that better than giving reps to both a middle infielder with a .589 career OPS and an OF with a .609 OPS? I'm all for it if it makes Escobar and Mastroianni expendable.
  20. True, but without upsetting former outfielders (and I was one) it seems to be a much easier transition. Afterall, Josh Willingham is about to start his third opening day in LF for the Twins.
  21. Well Escobar and Mastroianni can't hit anyway. Regardless if it's Escobar or Bartlett, I'd be quite happy if the team had a no-hit super utility guy that made the 5th (or 6th) no-hit OF unnecessary.
  22. I'd love it, but that means the Twins are banking on him being not just good, but elite. I couldn't see the Twins gambling like that, though I hope I'm wrong. I'd think they would wait at least until after his rookie year, I just can't imagine them paying an average of $19 million for three option years for a guy who hasn't proven anything against MLB pitching.
  23. Even if he still thinks he was right about the service time dispute, it's awesome that he acknowledges that he should have reacted better. That's a rare turnabout in today's culture it seems, particularly for a young man, which he still was at the time of his reversal of attitude.
  24. Interesting. He's surely got the range, and I'd guess he should be able to at least be competent. Looks like the Twins are trying to create their own Emilio Bonifacio. It would be nice if Bartlett became a usebale OF, simply because the Twins bench players tend to be so offensively challenged. I would certainly welcome the opportunity for one player to fill the spot normally assigned to an Escobar and a Mastroianni. The extra bench spot could then be used on a bat.
  25. I like it. I'm a fan of those top 5.
