  1. As long as the the 40-man isn't full of irreplaceable players, I don't see the difference if the 3rd catcher is on the roster now or if he has to be added when his services are actually needed. Maybe it saves some assistant 5 minutes worth of paperwork?
  2. Your first line might be most apt to Twins thinking. They seem to make a lot of moves based on rewarding employees even while they may not make the best business sense. Plenty to admire in that philosophy, even if I don't agree with the decisions as they do not necessarily seem to be the easiest path to a championship.
  3. http://m.sports.naver.com/baseball/news/read.nhn?oid=109&aid=0002958267 After years of speculation and rumors, the Twins finally signed hack Hannahan.
  4. I feel bad for guys who didn't use and played during the steriod era and are thus tainted by their peers. Still, they still reaped the financial rewards that the era brought and nothing but pride and fear of ostricization stopped them from being a whistleblower, pushing the players union to agree to testing/punishment or publicly disclosing that they think cheaters should be run out of the game. That last option would have been a pretty simple act and would have looked good on anyone's resume, it certianly helped Frank Thomas' perception and likely the voting results.
  5. Yup, that could very well be. He could be a hero in this market. In a larger market at best he's key supporting figure and at worst he's the goat that gets 100 media members at his locker after every start asking him 100 different ways why he sucks so bad.
  6. Great work everyone and glad your back John. Though I don't think you're fooling anyone implying that you're a teenager busy trying to get into college!
  7. Pittsburgh won the bidding at $5.02 million. It's reported that Kang is looking for a deal worth $5-6 million annually. I suspected the previous salary expectations were way off. http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/full/2014/12/20/56/1200000000AEN20141220001200315F.html?input=www.twitter.com So nothing unpalatable, even if he doesn't pan out.
  8. Unless it's someone on a rookie contract, I wouldn't classify anyone as tradeable until they have less than 1 1/2 years left on their contract. Teams aren't generally taking on multi-year deals unless it's a salary dump in very favorable terms for the buyer, and I have a hard time picturing the Twins paying a significant portion of someone's salary to play for another team.
  9. They already got thier RH corner OF with questionable defense. It didn't go over well with most people on this site. I don't expect doubling down will make many people too happy.
  10. Well that's the issue though, it's not an OR situation. It's not if he cuts down his walks OR May or Milone lose there spots. Unless they go to a six man rotaion, somebody DOES have to lose their spot. Probably won't happen, but even if Meyer is lights out in AAA, if Gibson and the 5th guy in the rotation are merely adequate, Meyer will not come up. This team isn't going to take a spot away from a guy unless he is clearly failing, even if it looks like the guy behind him is of greater value.
  11. Which then brings up the quality vs quantity debate. Many of us would prefer quality with the understanding that evaluating these guys isn't an exact science.
  12. Is that both the date to when we'll see Meyer and the rotation spot he'll take?
  13. Probably because that's where the Twins international bonus pool lines up most years. The system is ineffecutal in it's current state, but all things being equal (which was the intent of the current system) the Twins should be getting a top 4-7 international prospect each year due to their poor record.
  14. He should be leap frogging those guys by virtue of ceiling. I think this team has hurt itself most by never going in full blown rebuild mode. They got themselves a few extra wins a year by signing some vets, but the results just weren't worth it. Signing Santana, Hunter and extending Hughes seems to signify to me that the team thinks it can restock instead of rebuild. It seems counter-intuitive, but I think it just puts off the date when this team becomes a legit contender. I think they'll be pretty decent this year, but nowhere near where they have to be to win the WS. I'll give them credit for spending some money instead of going all out destitute like the Astros, but I still think the long term health of the organization would have been better playing young guys and signing tradeable vets to short term deals.
  15. Right, or roughly the same age Alex Meyer will be when he finally becomes a free agent.
  16. Hasn't pitched in the MLB since 2011, I wouldn't have guessed that. I'd think that he is an extremely long shot to make the opening day 25-man. Odds are against him ever getting called up. Logan Darnell has pitched just as many MLB innings as he has this decade. He always had a live arm though.
  17. I don't know, the Twins are paying Ervin Santana more per year than him and Nolasco will only be making 200K less. Hughes has a much higher ceiling than either I would think. Had Hughes come anywhere close to his 2014 numbers the next two years and hit the free agent market as a 30-year-old, I'd think he would have been very likely to get a 5 year +, $100 million + deal. I think Hughes took some risk that he left money on the table, possibly a lot of money. I'm leary of 5 year deals, but he's only going be 6 months older than Santana is now when his contract is up.
  18. Well getting Quade was quite the coup. I actually would have been disappointed if Quade was in play but the team chose to give the job to Smith. Your first point seems pretty logical though. It's likely that the Twins wanted to move Mientkiewicz up and Smith then let it be known that he'd prefer to be in Ft. Myers. Whether he truely did prefer the move or whether it was to make it look like a demotion was his idea, who knows. Really doesn't matter now I guess.
  19. I would really doubt he is in the Twins rotation to start the year, I doubt he will be in the bullpen either. The Twins have three veteran rotation arms at the moment in Hughes, Nolasco and Santana. For starting pitchers, they all are pretty durable, and all are expensive. None of them will get benched due to performance. Gibson has the other spot, he could get benched due to performance, as could the guy who wins the 5th spot; May should be the front runner for that considering that's where he ended the season. If anyone gets dinged up, I don't think Meyer will get called up, the random spot start isn't going to do him any good, he needs a home in the rotatoin when they finally decided to give him a chance. My guess is we won't see Meyer until July.
  20. Argh! Nothing's worse than an unfixable typo in the title. On top of the new years, his 2015-2016 salary increases from $8 million to $9.2 million.
  21. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/phil-hughes-three-year-extension-twins-article-1.2053194?cid=bitly On top of the two remaining years on his contract, Hughes gets $13.2 million per year from 2016-2019. Five years is a long time, I wouldn't have been a fan if he was a free agent, but he's still under 30, so this could work out really well for the team if he can be a rock in the rotation like he was last year. Of course it could go the other way and this deal could end up being quite a burden, but such is the dilemma when dealing with the fragile arms of MLB pitchers. Can't win without them.
  22. And the team would really lose that much if they instead had to recall James Beresford, Levi Michael or Doug Bernier to ride pine? Sounds like the reasons Gardy always gave for rostering three catchers.
