  1. I think the Twins should concern themselves most with number 3. Don't worry about trying not to lose a guy, only worry about losing a guy you actually want. To that end, let Dean go. Unless this team is reverting back to the Albers/De Vries days, there is no reasonable place for Dean on this team, if another team thinks they could use him, good for them and good for Dean, that's what this draft is designed for anyway, so teams can't hoard players they'll never use even if another team would.
  2. Good list. One of my top concerns, maybe my top concern was the step back, or at least lack of development from all the hard throwing relief pitchers who were previously thought to be on the fast track to the majors. It couldn't get more disappointing for the 2014 draft class with Burdi, Reed and Curtis all disappointing after strong 2014 seasons. Add Zach Jones to the mix and it's easy to see why many people thought the MLB bullpen should have easily been able to be fixed internally last year. Despite all the attention paid to relief arms in the draft lately, only two guys (out of 18!) pitched in relief in 2015 and were drafted by the team this decade. They were Ryan O'rourke picked in round 10 and AJ Achter in round 46 in 2010. Oof.
  3. There is going to be a right-handed OF on the 25-man, and I still don't believe it's actually going to be Sano. Even if it's Buxton to start the year, I think there's going to be someone who can pinch hit/platoon with Rosario/Arcia/Kepler. I don't think whoever gets signed/traded actually blocks anyone unless they are actually hitting well in which case the blocked player(s) (Buxton/Kepler) may instead find themselves getting at bats from Rosario or Arcia.
  4. He has two yearsleft, just like Nolasco. He's been awful since singing with Atlanta and was only a bench player last year, but did manage a .757 OPS in 87 games. He also had a .797 OPS against lefties, which is probably what the Twins need in a 4th OF considering every other OF option is left handed. I'd do it, not because I think Upton is useful, but because shipping out Nolasco makes my May 1st rotation of May, Duffey and Berrios a little bit easier to envision.
  5. With the hype, the hot start and Houston's surprise season, Correa had it won before Lindor and Sano even got called up, fair or not.
  6. Bluffing like this doesn't sound like the Twins, but I agree, surely some teams would value a switch hitting 25-year-old slugger, even for the bench, I can't believe the twins couldn't get an A ball lotto ticket at least. I mean hypothetically if they DFA'd him, he'd get claimed wouldn't he?
  7. Probably shouldn't go to AAA than, that level is littered with junkballers who struggle to reach the low 90s. You want him to learn to hit a hard fastball, he'll have to go to AA. Or face Cleveland for a four game series, that'll teach a guy real good.
  8. I agree, it appears to be the toughest part. Though I don't think cutting down walks for a relief pitchers is always a necessity. Count Dellin Betances, Justin Grimm and Aroldis Chapman among the relief pitchers who had a worse BB/9 than 4.10 last year.
  9. I don't want to say I'm for the trade exactly, but I have been defending it. I'd say my biggest problem with it has nothing to do with Hicks, because I'm not high on him and am looking forward to possibly better offensive players getting his ABs, my concern is that the Twins settled for Murphy. The trade happened so soon I to the off season that I have a hard time buying that the Twins got a definitive 'No' on better young catchers. I absolutely would have tossed in Stewart, Reed, Arcia or of course a sign and trade of Duensing to get a young catcher with a higher ceiling. In conjunction with that concern, I'm worried that because the Twins acted on this so soon, they think Murphy is something he's not. Of course that could also mean the Twins know he's something that the rest of us don't.
  10. If only he'd addressed the bullpen in Detroit...
  11. Darnell and Dean are soft-tossing lefties, I don't think they can even hit 90 MPH. They may be able to increase their velocity as a reliever, but they're still going to be your traditional junkballer that possibly could miss bats in AAA but usually can't get batters to do the same at the MLB level. Look at Tommy Milone who was mowing down batters in AAA yet doesn't miss many bats at the MLB level. If the options were sparse and the team was in the gutter, sure, you might as well give it a shot, but we can be relatively confident in the types of pitchers these guys are and they are not late-inning relievers, which is what this team needs. This team doesn't need more middle relief options, the whole pen is full of those guys already; Fien, Pressly, Tonken, Graham. There are better options both internal and external that should be vetted first.
  12. A guy who no one would have thought would accept the QO does, and his agent is Scott Boras. My mind automatically jumps to diabolical conclusions, even if they are baseless and ludicrous.
  13. I meant we wouldn't have much to complain about Suzuki if he's actually contributing. But no, I have been on this site long enough to know that there will always be a boatload of things to complain about.
  14. The Twins have never been much for platoons. I'd guess Suzuki gets the opening day gig and catches 4-5 games a week until he fails to perform, then it switches almost exclusively to Murphy. Of course if Suzuki doesn't struggle for some reason, I guess there won't be a lot to complain about.
  15. I'd give Rogers a shot as a LOOGY, I have no problem there. If we're talking about fixing the bullpen though, I'm talking about getting the shut down guys for end of the game. I'm all for throwing Meyer, Burdi, Chargois, Reed, Cole Johnson and Zach Jones into the water and seeing who floats. Sounds like a great idea to me actually. If the club isn't willing to take that gamble however, I'd prefer free agents who can miss bats over the Deans, Darnells and Milones who should only be used as long-man/swing-man/mop-up duty.
  16. I like Newcomb and was all for the Twins drafting him. It sucks to lose a favorite player, but you might have a Jon Lester in return.
  17. None of those guys can strike anyone out though, and I think that's pretty imperative for a guy in the pen. At least it's been the biggest weakness of the recent relievers this team has assembled.
  18. I do too. No offense to Blaine Boyer, but these are the kinds of gambles the team should be making. The odds of him figuring it out might not be high, but if he does, the results will not be boring. He's the kind of guy who will almost certainly only be either a bust, or have late inning abilities, this isn't long-man/swing-man/mop-up-duty kind of material.
  19. Affeldt, Adams, Burnett, Broxton and League all performed poorly. Fujikawa was an unknown international signing who was a real crap shoot going in. It looks like from this list it's about 50/50 that it works out (45/65 if Fujikawa is weighted the same). The one thing that seems to be common though, is that the busts have either been injured or were not good strikeout pitchers. Meanwhile, Grilli, Peralta, Choate, Soria and Gorzlanny all seem to be able to manage at least a 8.0K/9.
  20. I think you might have your Uptons mixed up. SD only has the bad one under contract, a contract that rivals Nolasco's regretfullnes.
  21. I wasn't in favor of this approach, but when the team up and started tanking five years ago and the rebuild started, I think the course was kind of set. I'm committed to seeing it through. I just don't see how the current rotation is going to compete for a WS and it's not like the team is going to get David Price. I need to see what we have in Berrios, May and Duffey to see if there is any hope the young guys can turn out to be what this team needs. Once the rotation is fixed and the unneeded vets are out of the picture, then I'm in favor of aggressively plugging the holes. Right now we're just plugging holes on paper, but we don't actually know what the issues will be until the games are played. I'm more in favor of plugging the holes then.
  22. I really hope the Twins aren't in win-now mode. Their best players are in their early to mid-20s, their window should be more than half a decade, and I'm not even sure if it's open yet.
  23. Which is a good reason why it probably won't be Robinson.
  24. I've been all about the youth movement, but I can't imagine any reason a veteran OF would block the younger players, aside from Buxton they are all lefties. There almost certainly will be a righty OF bench bat this year and next regardless of his offensive skill level. We're basically talking about filling the role the front office wanted for Hunter.
