  1. But this is a national epidemic, and somehow it's just these athletes on TV playing games who are portrayed as the victims. In just about every vocation, the manual laborers do all the heavy lifting while the white collars reap the profits. Walmart employees, coal miners, migrant farmers, auto workers all have it worse. The athletes aren't getting paid but they also have the huge advantage of not having cost of living expenses that the lower class and largely uneducated laborers have.
  2. I'm unimpressed with the offseason, but as far as a LHRP goes, Sipp and Bastardo are all I would care for but no way I'd give them three years. It sucks but I'd rather go with Rogers over the other free agent options. Actually, I like Abad's upside a ton more than guys like Thorton and Cotts.
  3. I agree that plenty of voters aren't qualified, but on the other hand if they nor the organization are held in high regard it probably shouldn't be worth too much angst. Kind of like Hollywood celebrities telling us common folk who should be president. When I was there, there was a display celebrating Kent Hrbek observing Ron Gant's poor base running skills. The busts were cool, but I was more interested in the exhibits. But I like history and museums in general, I know they're not for everybody.
  4. No thanks on that extension with Jepsen. If the Twins really like him come 2017 they can afford to pay him free agent money, it's unlikely he's so good that he'd get much more next off season than he'd demand right now, no need to do another Suzuki/Doumit blunder and extend him after what is likely his peak. He's not a normal arb guy, he'll be 32 this year and he lost a full MPH on his fastball last year and two from his peak velocity. His curve and change aren't that good, he pretty much relies on that fastball. Let's not forget that he wasn't terribly effective with the Rays last year; 4.19/4.22 FIP/xFIP, his K/9 with the Rays was only 7.34 compared to 2014's 10.38 and his walk rate was rising. In fact his BB/9 with the small sample with the Twins was the lowest of his career, that sounds more like a blip than a trend for a 31-year-old. He looks like a serious regression candidate. Edit: I don't like the word regression. He looks like a prime candidate to begin to succumb to the natural effects of aging.
  5. I think keeping May in the pen is a bad move, but Trevor Rosenthal still hasn't been moved back to the rotation as had been the plan. He was blocked by guys like Jake Westbrook, Kyle Lohse and Joe Kelly early in his career. The Twins aren't the only team.
  6. The NCAA has nothing to do with this, the pro leagues set an age limit to protect themselves. Minor League baseball and hockey were created long before these leagues were consumed with greed, they don't make money. The NFL and NBA don't create legit minor leagues because they'd cost money, not make it. (is the D-League legit? It almost certainly isn't profitable enough to expand or it would have by now) The NBA and NFL set age limits to protect the teams because they know the idiots running the teams can't help themselves and draft youngsters with potential but can't play in the league yet. The NBA nearly killed its product before they put a stop to drafting HS kids. I think it's stupid that they aren't able to manage this without rules, but I don't see the problem with it either. No one puts up a stink if a lawyer, pilot or dentist is required to meet certain eligibility requirements.
  7. Well he's played six years with three teams and has 1301 PA batting 1st or 2nd compared to 357 batting anywhere else in the order, so it's basically all of his managers. I think it's pretty clear where teams think his skill set fits best at this point.
  8. I would bet when the Nats use Revere, he'll be batting at the top of the lineup. Milone surely would not.
  9. I would give Milone away to open up a spot for May, Duffey or Berrios. I really don't think he has much value. Even if he did, you can't force the Nationals to take a #5 starter if they really want a top of the lineup outfielder.
  10. I agree. Otherwise it'd be the same as saying, 'New Wall Street/NASCAR/PGA regulations are really targeting white males.'
  11. I agree that if the players are to be paid, this is the only way it will work. Still, what happens when Alabama says all of their football players should be paid $1M (because I'm pretty sure every cent of tax dollars in the state of Alabama goes to their football team) and the U of M says they should be paid 1K? I just don't see how any scenario that has players getting paid doesn't have an end result of about two dozen schools in an elite division and everyone else in a 2nd or 3rd tier. The Gophers better get used to playing Central Michigan yearly. If we think they have trouble keeping up with Wisconsin, Nebraska, OSU, Michigan and Michigan State now....
  12. Someone has to be the biggest. I want him at 3B, but his size has very little to do with it.
  13. Can you throw out a suggestion or two? The Twins have no players in terms of position, age, service time and skill set that compares to Ben Revere. There is no way to know what the Twins would have had to give up, but seeing as the Blue Jays had to give up a controllable vet and the Nationals aren't rebuilding, the Twins almost certainly would have had to trade a player that could contribute for them right now, the exact kind of player the Twins wouldn't want to trade. This doesn't look like a situation where the team could have thrown a handful of C-B prospects at the problem to fix it.
  14. No way the polls are an accurate reflection of anything at this point. Republican voters know Trump could never win and while some (many?) say they like him now, he won't get the votes when it counts because he can't win, same thing will happen with Sanders. I feel pretty comfortable predicting that a social conservative will never win the White House again, at least if our culture remains anything close to what it is today. A fiscal conservative could win but the party will need to divorce itself from the idea that all candidates have to be both. Fair or not, the public now ties social conservatives to bigotry, stubbornness, ethnocentrism and fear of change. People overwhelmingly do not want to be tied to those labels anymore and again, fair or not social media is making sure those that do are pariahs.
  15. Fair or not, Hilary will win the Dem votes for two exclusively non-political reasons: A ) Most voters already know she is extremely likely to beat anyone the Republicans nominate but few are as confident with Sanders, and keeping the presidency away from the Republicans is more important to many of these voters than getting their first choice in office. B ) Super unfair, but Bernie is 74 and looks 80. Hillary is 68 and looks 58. Bernie is healthy for all I know, and Hillary did have health concerns awhile back, but his apparent age is going to be a big draw back for him. Someone said his policies are about 12 years too early and I agree. Unfortunately his age is about 12 years too late. And we have to face it, there is a gigantic bloc of voters who know jack squat about politicians and what they actually stand for. Also, doesn't both of the top two contenders getting up there in age pretty strongly suggest that a younger guy will be the running mate? Is O'Malley a shoe in to be on the ticket?
  16. The Black Sox, Pete Rose, Bonds, Clemons and the entire PED era, Kent Hrbek and Eddie Gaedel are all in the HOF though. This place is a museum, all of baseball's history is depicted good and bad. I'm not sure everyone who hasn't been there understands this. What everyone is arguing is who should get plaques which are reserved for the hallowed players. If the museum is telling the story of the history of baseball, including these guys, why do the cheaters need a bust? Wouldn't that be like having a WWII HOF and adding a bust of Mussolini* along with all of the heroes of the war? * Clearly Bonds is not as vile of a human as Mussolini, the point only is why would we honor the infamous players of the game when they are already chronicled as being a part of this history? This is a private organization, if they don't feel comfortable honoring these guys, why should they have to change the rules?
  17. Berrios hasn't been mis-managed. One could argue the current rotation has, but not Berrios. I would really feel more comfortable if we knew that Nolasco and Hughes had about the shortest leashes available though. I might be alone, but I'm very worried about Hughes. If we get through spring training and his fastball is still only at 90 MPH as it was last year, I'm going to feel pretty confident saying that whatever ailed him last year (if something was truly ailing him) isn't going to be reversed; his breaking stuff is just not good enough for him to get by with a 90 MPH heater.
  18. It has been a looooong time since the Twins had a young player of this stature, but for the Twins, in most other situations where the roster crunch involves a young player and veterans, the young player almost always finds himself holding the short straw either on the bench or in AAA. I don't think the Twins will do that, but what if Sano plays bad defense and starts the season cold?
  19. You'd only get Storen for one year, that's way too high a price for one year of a set up guy. Toronto will at least use him as a closer. If we want Storen, we can get him next year as a free agent.
  20. Yeah this bizarre situation makes most sense if the team is still planning on a trade. I might guess the Twins had ideas of trading Plouffe but for everyone's sake, including Plouffe's peace of mind, they meant to suggest Sano could play OF. Now Plouffe couldn't be traded for good value and the team seems stuck. I wouldn't be surprised if the team truly doesn't know how they are going manage this current situation.
  21. That's true, but that also means Bonds knew he was likely a HOFer before he started using. He would have also known that getting caught using would almost certainly label him a cheater and keep him out of the Hall. If he didn't give a crap about getting into the Hall, why should we?
  22. At 16 during my Sophmore year I stopped growing, topping out at 6'3", my best friend was a 5'6" runt who always said he would some day be as tall as his 6'4" dad. I always rolled my eyes until fall basketball tryouts happened junior year and sure enough, he was taller than me. The kid grew 9 damn inches in ten months. Oh, and he made the team, I didn't.
  23. Damn kids. They just have to have those new sneakers and three months later they're already too small.
  24. Nice write-ups Thrylos. A lot of effort put into a lot of relative unknowns, well done.
  25. Fine by me, except for the biding. They're hard throwing relievers, they need no biding and minimal seasoning. There are a half dozen options which means there isn't room for them all at once, cycle through them and see who sticks. A relief pitcher who is a refined and finished product is called a starter.
