  1. If the Twins hadn't signed Park and kept Plouffe, Sano almost certainly would be looking at the DH spot. Committing him to DH at this age sounds like a worse fate than learning the OF.
  2. They made some big moves, but they still only have two good offensive players, both of whom are coming off of career years. In fact their four best offensive players are all 28 and coming off of career years. That just doesn't sound sustainable.
  3. In what scenario isn't Buxton an everyday player? If he's on the bench or platooning, something has gone very, very wrong with him, and more concerning, something has gone very, very wrong with management that they would allow the #2 prospect in the game to not get regular playing time somewhere. Sano's lack of defensive ability should have no impact on Buxton, other than the actual literal meaning of the word impact, which wasn't referenced in the post.
  4. His entire four year contract is what Nolasco is going to make each of the next two years, and I think most people, fairly or not, have already written off Nolasco as a sunk cost. There is so little risk here it seems pretty needless to even worry about it.
  5. No because Phil Hughes was worse in 2015 and the only other consistent starting contributor in both 2014 and 2015 was Kyle Gibson, a groundball pitcher. I hope you recall everyone freaking out about the Twins adding the defensive liability that was supposed to be Torii Hunter. Hunter was fine last year and played all season. I think it just goes to show you don't need great OF defense at TF because it's so small, at least RF.
  6. As bad as his bat was, the biggest issue was for some reason their scouts weren't able to tell that he didn't have either the arm or the range to play SS at the MLB level. They traded their SS in Hardy and were planning on replacing him with Nishioka who opened the season as a 2B because it was clear during spring training that he couldn't play SS. There should be some forgiveness not knowing if the bat would play at the next level, but the glove and the arm? They should have been much easier to spot. No excuses for that.
  7. That's not true though, it's not like Berrios would take the same deal if he's three years from free agency that he would if he's two years from free agency. Take the hypothetical situation where the Twins would normally have Berrios for six years + two extension years; if he's called up early, they aren't automatically going to be able to get him to do five years + three extension years instead. Also, team control for five years instead of six would make it awfully tempting to want to test the free agent market and refuse to talk extension at all.
  8. I hope an injury or awful performance from an incumbent isn't going to be what is required for him to come up. If he's pitching better than a vet(s), he should be up.
  9. Nishioka was a diva who insisted on wearing clothes provided by his apparel brand before being forced to change into Twins garb, who alienated many people in his own clubhouse and who wanted to be treated like a star even when he was performing like a minor leaguer. Am I the only one who didn't know this?
  10. That would probably be wise, but Molitor seems to say what's on his mind. This shouldn't be surprising, of course they aren't going to yo-yo their star player with defensive concerns all over the field, they'll have their hands full learning one position. Sano will get reconsidered at 3B when Plouffe is gone. Heck, he's only in RF because of the crowds at DH/3B/1B and the team is trying to wedge it's best offensive lineup together. I'd bet if Kepler or Arcia force the issue, Sano would be reconsidered at DH/3B/1B depending on which vet isn't pulling his weight. He's just not going to be what we would think of as position flexible.
  11. The show is great, my fear though is fans are going to start getting restless if the Mike part of the story isn't shown often enough. Breaking Bad was awesome and it was tense nearly the whole time. Legal dramas don't really bring that same element, but as we saw in this last episode, dealing with dangerous drug dealers does, and Mike appears set to be doing a lot of that.
  12. Same for me, but only because Hughes was first. I wouldn't have cared much either way which one the Twins signed long-term, but I didn't want both. I said at the time, that I applauded Ryan for his bold move in signing Nolasco, but I didn't like the pitcher. I'm still not going to criticize him for finally taking a risk, even if there were different risks I would have preferred.
  13. Why not just transfer the last 60 wherever the hell they sent the other thousands of transfers then? Then when congress still refuses to close it the Republicans get to explain to everyone why the taxpayers have to foot the bill for hundreds of millions per year to run an empty prison and force service men and women to live in Cuba instead of going home to their families or serve in a place where they'd be put to actual use? Sounds like a great strategy to make sure anyone who pretends to be fiscally conservative and pro military gets called out for really only trying to stop Obama from getting anything done. $450M per year for 60 prisoners? Give me a break Ryan.
  14. Why, it's what the Republican's are saying needs to happen. They are saying that the next president should choose. Or do they only mean the next Republican president should choose? There is no reason for them to block the nomination process itself unless they are trying to say that the President gets to choose, no questions asked. The nomination process is their chance to make their case, they are choosing not to use it.
  15. What am I missing here? Obama wants to close it and transfer the 60 or so prisoners left but the Republicans say they will block it. 80% of the prisoners have already been transferred, why doesn't Obama just do the same with the remaining 60? He shouldn't need congress to move prisoners, I doubt they all voted on the thousands of previous prisoners that have been transferred. That would leave an empty Gitmo costing hundreds of millions of dollars a year and no justification to leave it open.
  16. They both were included in that trade, I regretfully left out Hardy like a mis-treated step child on a family tree.
  17. Why would you set your lineup based on career numbers instead of what the player is doing for you currently? Lineup setting better be fluid, it always has been as long as I can remember.
  18. At this point, I hope Mcconnell and company get their way and Hilary appoints a homosexual, Hispanic, Muslim who lives below the poverty line, was born in Russia and went to public school.
  19. I agree that Democrats shouldn't generally use the, "principle" aspect of this issue unless the Republicans do in which case it should be fair game for them to also be able to use the same card. Conservative posters here don't seem to be saying this is a matter of principle, but the candidates/Senators certainly are.
  20. So Republican's are listening to Joe Biden now? The "rule" is unwritten and it was called the Thurmond Rule where a lame duck president shouldn't nominate anyone after July. It's not even close to July. And when Democrats pointed out that Bush was appointing lower district court judges within this time frame, the Republicans said there was no such rule and they could do what they wanted.
  21. Republican's can't/shouldn't what?
  22. Scalia would be so proud of their utter disregard for the constitutional process. Everyone knows how anti-constitution he was. I'd like to hear what the other eight justices think of congress not hearing a legit nomination process. I wonder how people would react if a justice died in the first year of Obama's presidency. Who would be OK with him dragging HIS feet and not nominating anyone for a year?
  23. Still, your only looking at his career. The second half of last year, Escobar got on base better than Dozier and Buxton and he was clearly a better overall player than all three of those guys. If he plays like he did in last year's second half, why wouldn't he be considered a better fit? At least a better fit than the already OBP challenged Dozier.
  24. None of Escobar's numbers look great when looking at his career, but like the rest of his stats, his OBP was much better after getting the full time gig and was .330 in the second half last year. That's not spectacular, but if he can do that again, he's not a bad option for the top of the lineup.
  25. Lot's of fans said they should. Obviously the team didn't want to but that decision wasn't based on long term winning, it was based on putting fans in the seats at all costs. And it still failed.
