  1. Looks like a good year to be a rebuilding team with a handful of desirable pieces with no real comps on the free agent market.
  2. His job requirements include organizing Brian Dozier bobblehead give-away day not Brian Dozier relocation day. St. Peter doesn't make these calls.
  3. Damn, life must be so fun without a conscience or magnetism toward morality. Never feeling guilty about doing and saying awful things must be awesome.
  4. I must be missing the point. Nick Blackburn was the #56 prospect in 2008, Masterson was #64. Any GM unwilling to consider a signing bonus of 500K for a top 100 prospect has no business being a GM.
  5. I'm guessing the take away wasn't intended to be the "Ivy-League" part so much as the "white male" part. Klaw probably shouldn't have implied that a good education was bad because last I checked Harvard has at least reluctantly started letting in women and people with ancestors not originally from Europe.
  6. These kind of seem like two different issues. I'd be concerned for the Twins if Levine isn't up for the job because of his lack of appropriate background and I'd be concerned if Falvey is just going to hire clones of himself. Other reports made it sound like that wasn't the plan though and there are other targets as well. We'll have to see. Then there is the diversity issue. I'm all for MLB doing something to try to get more diversity into these positions. While the Twins could have/should have done more on their own to address the issue, being a white, Ivy League male doesn't mean Falvey or Levine won't be assets to the club.
  7. Yes, you have to interview at least one non-Ivy League grad and you can't act snooty while doing it.
  8. I don't have a problem with Bremer. He's a complete homer but I'm guessing that's pretty much a requirement of any local play-by-play guy. He knows the Twins and he knows his broadcasting area like the back of his hand. I'm guessing one of the biggest issues people have with the current broadcasting team is the lack of understanding of new school baseball ideas. I'd prefer to have on air discussions about those, but casual viewers like my mother would get bored very quickly and there are more casual viewers than there are viewers with Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs bookmarked on their browsers. While she probably wouldn't be great to replace Bert as a color person, I wouldn't mind Marney Gelner giving Dick a breather once in awhile, I'd like to see what she can do. She seems to be very in control and knowledgeable. I used to like Bert, he was more blunt and still is, but he does have an air of mailing it in lately. It could be getting old for him but perhaps it's just all the losing.
  9. In case anyone forgot about him, New Gingrich wanted to remind people he's still an awful person: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGy5wpY3kMI About the 6:20 mark is where most of the fireworks start but I'm linking the whole interview so as not to appear a cherry picker. With attacks on Megyn Kelly by Trump, Ailes and Gingrich, I'd like to say it's just more evidence that the leaders of that party reject the idea that women can be a useful part of our society outside of the kitchen and bedroom. However it's probably just as likely that they attack her because they view her as a traitor who won't stay lock-step with the party and keep her mouth shut about things she doesn't like about Trump/the GOP, and it's only a coincidence that she's a woman.
  10. First off, I doubt anyone thought Buxton would be BETTER than Trout. The overly optimistic only thought he would be AS good as Trout. Huge distinction. Probably. And second, come on leave Buxton out of it! He's just starting to get some steam back, lay off!
  11. That sounds familiar, but I think you might be thinking of a different country's government. I'm pretty sure our representatives are elected to act cowardly and make sure nothing ever gets done with the hopes of not giving their opponent something to use against them in the next election. I typically agree though, particularly on a municipal level. There shouldn't be votes on school bonding or building a new library. If the city leaders are too afraid of making that decision and offending the opposing citizens, they had no business trying to get elected in the first place. I'm less opposed to measures aimed at social issues on a state level. It seems way too often the politicians need to see an actual majority of their constituents actually support LGBT rights before they suddenly have a revelation and think it's a good idea too.
  12. I think something like this: http://www.the007dossier.com/007dossier/Magazines/Empire/april-2015/James-Bond-Spectre-Empire-April-2015_Page_067.jpg
  13. I thought it would be hard to keep Anthony seeing as he didn't get the top job. It will be interesting to see who stays, the more and more rumors that come out, the fewer people I think do. It's certainly starting to look like most people who stay will not be in a high profile positions.
  14. I actually am more interested in the next line: "The fact that Minnesota was offering additional AGM slots to outside hires, though, does suggest that there could be further changes to the Twins’ front office even after adding Falvey and Levine." Go get em', pick these other teams clean. Can't wait until we start seeing ideas for major and minor league field staffs too. I would also guess that the other Cleveland guy who was Falvey's best man at his wedding is still strong possibility of coming along.
  15. “[A]t the trade deadline, we are all on Twitter, because you may be surprised how many trade discussions are inspired or refined by tweets.” Crowd sourcing trades via Twitter is actually the thing that gave me most pause! Though I'm not a fan of that kind of social media at all so if there is any value to it I'll probably be the last to realize it.
  16. My profession is not televised so I was not able to learn the fundamentals and intricacies of my job growing up either. Of course I'm terrible at my job.... I agree with the other posters though. Sure, you can mimic Fernando Valenzuela's windup or Kirby Puckett's leg kick, but I don't think you learn the fundamentals. And if a professional coach can't get the players to learn them sans TV, he's probably not a very good teacher. Perhaps fundamentals have deteriorated but it's probably just as likely we are viewing history with rose colored glasses. Let's not forget half of sports highlight shows in the 80's and 90's were actually of bloopers.
  17. Good name. I wasn't aware of him, but I like the background.
  18. At least it appears the Falvey has his fingers in other team's pies. While I would welcome some of his cohorts from Cleveland, I would really like a group of men and women with a diverse background from multiple organizations. If the new front office is just made up of old Minnesota guys and new Cleveland cronies the country club didn't really get disbanded so much as it expanded.
  19. Can we get the Russians to hack the Twins emails? I would really like a behind the scenes look at what was certainly a tight ship and almost just as certainly a style of ship decommissioned by other clubs decades ago. I'm thinking they've been sailing the Pequod this whole time.
  20. Trump got tons of free publicity, probably set himself up for millions of dollars in reality TV programming for life and got to spout off all the hateful stuff he's wanted to say for years. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he never actually wanted to be president until Cruz, Rubio and company started saying he was unfit for the job, at which point his ego convinced him he DID want it. Also, he probably shouldn't forget the bias Matt Lauer showed him, the threat of lawsuits the producer gave his employees if they leaked behind the scenes Apprentice tapes and the huge donations NBC/Universal gave to his "charity". There's certainly at least one media outlet that has subversively been backing Trump this whole time.
  21. Twins vs. Red Sox usually doesn't work out too well. However if this guy is actually considering the assistant GM job in AZ instead of the GM job in Boston, perhaps he's actively looking to leave. It's possible Dombrowski is too much of a micro-manager or something and these assistants would prefer to spread their wings. If there are some ill-winds blowing in Beantown, that would be just fine by me, not just in the case of snagging this guy, but in terms of that team's future; their offense is starting to look frightening, I wouldn't mind something tripping them up.
  22. My arguement wasn't that small markets can't get there, it's that they can't stay there. Which team is more likely to be back to the WS five years from now with the same core, Chicago or Cleveland?
  23. Man baseball needs a hard cap and a hard floor. This thread just demonstrates the problems mid-market midwest teams are going to have consistently competing. I'm fine with rebuilding if something isn't working, but there really isn't even an option for retaining your core and trying to add auxiliary pieces to it after a down season or two, and that should be an option for all clubs, not just the ones in NY, LA and Boston. If for some reason the Cubs tank next year, they aren't going to have to talk about trading Rizzo, Arrieta or Bryant. A team like the Royals really has no choice.
  24. Without knowing too much about the source material; that trailer is flat out awesome. Johnny Cash's version of Hurt was perfect for it and if you had never seen an X-Men movie, you would have no clue it was about super heroes. It looked like if Cormic McCarthy's The Road had a baby with Midnight Run. Which is a compliment obviously.
