  1. Yeah, they ran a lot of two TE sets yesterday and Morgan has been getting involved. I'd like to see Conklin the rookie some more as well. I think they need to get him reps because Rudolph isn't cheap, the team is going to have cap issues and I believe he can be cut with no cap hit next year. I think it's quite likely Rudolph will be gone.
  2. Also, how was the game Mike? I'm guessing leaving was a strange atmosphere for a visiting fan with the tie against the arch rival and all. Or maybe the atmosphere was the same since everyone in Green Bay is accustomed to kissing their sisters.
  3. Yeah it was a strange pick. I would have understood it more had they drafted a kicker two years ago after Blair Walsh's meltdown, but it wasn't like Forbath wasn't a more than competent kicker. The only explanation seems to be that for some reason they thought this guy was bound to be an elite kicker in the NFL. So many guys have the physical tools though, if they can't accurately measure the mental strength of a kicker (and that seems unlikely to predict from a college kid) I'd rather they just keep rolling with the Forbath's of the world.
  4. Yeah, it looked like Coley got the playing time after Treadwell's brief benching, but I'd think Zylstra might be the one to start getting significant looks in Treadwell's place. He's a big target, and probably faster than Treadwell as well.
  5. I don't know, it doesn't seem fair but are any of the players going to trust him in a big spot? I don't care about low pressure spots, it wasn't only the misses, but how absolutely devastated he looked. After his clearly lost confidence, I think Zimmer and Spielman have to ask themselves if they'd trust him to make a kick to win the NFC Championship game. If the answer is anything short of a resounding yes, I think they should move on, if only to show the players that they have their back.
  6. I don't think Spielman makes the decision about which players go out onto the field. If you're looking to blame someone for Treadwell's playing time, I think you need to aim for DeFilippo
  7. I don't think Spielman is all that great, but they had no problem eating crow on 4th rounder Willie Beaver two years ago, I think calling him stubborn is only a way to unjustifiably criticize. Can't a bad draft pick just be a bad draft pick without it being personal?
  8. The team seems to have a higher talent level than they are playing up to. Disappointment seems to be becoming a self fullfilling prophecy. 2019 can't come soon enough.
  9. I think the good strikeout pitchers have stuff that can miss bats while staying in the zone. The pretender strikeout pitchers constantly try to get guys to chase.
  10. ****Moderator Note**** This thread needs to stay civil, if you're not sure if you're getting close to the line, then it's probably better to reconsider what you're writing. The premise of this thread alone is borderline trolling. People are allowed to like Mauer without being homers. People are also allowed to criticize Mauer without being haters. Any generalization of other posters is not allowed on this site.
  11. I tend to do both. I did with TR and Gardy and do with the new front office. No one's getting unconditional praise or condemnation from me though the scale can tilt heavily in one direction. I am struggling to find enough things I appreciate about Molitor currently though. He seems humble and willing to try out new suggestions, I'll give him that.
  12. Looking at his game logs it looks like at Rochester he caught near exclusively in May, then only had a spot inning or two after June 2nd followed by his MLB promotion on June 30th. Yeah, I guess in June someone looked at the Twins organizational catcher depth and said, "Nah, we're good here".
  13. I think you're under-estimating what teams will put up with defensively. Even if you want to give Manny Machado a pass for his elite bat, Escobar's defensive ratings at short the past couple years don't tend to look out of place compared to less-prolific batsmen like Tim Beckham, Asdrubal Cabrera, Chris Taylor, Willy Adams, Jose Peraza or even out own Jorge Polanco.
  14. I'm so far down the replace Molitor road that there's no going back for me, but Astundillo is doing some catching now, so either Molitor wasn't against it at the time or someone gave him a talking to about the situation prior to the recall. It would be a fantastic question for La Velle to ask him directly.
  15. So, with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, if he comes to the plate should a free pass be a given for the opposing team? You know he's not going to strike out and he's not going to unintentionally take a walk so there's next to no point in trying to pitch around him. On the other hand, he's not at all an intimidating hitter.
  16. If Kirilloff isn't logging significant MLB playing time, it probably means the team is competing and the outfielders are hitting well enough without him.
  17. I guess I'd suggest next year is the prove it year now that they are looking at about $80M in available payroll and plenty prospects available to trade. I'm not sure what you mean about the AA/AAA comment though. Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing Thorpe, Romero, Rooker, Wade and Wells. Gordon's still giving other people the warm fuzzies too I believe.
  18. So not only is Rodgers injured and questionable to play but Davante Adams also isn't practicing. Ok, call me a masochist, but I'm pretty confident in the Vikings being a better team than Green Bay, even on the road. I kind of want them to be full health so the Vikings can beat the tar out of them without their fans complaining that it was only due to injuries, like last year.
  19. I'd overpay for DeGrom or Syndergaard. This team needs to get much better with it's on-base skills, I'd look for a better corner bat at 3B or RF. What's Pittsburgh's off season plans this year? Lately they're both cheap and terrible at trades, might Gregory Polanco or Starling Marte be available because of their contracts? Maybe Michael Conforto, Jorge Solar? Will Washington push ahead without Bryce Harper or are they going to look to revamp their team? They have a lot of outfielders either way and I'd be happy to get Adam Eaton in a deal. Winning or losing, Oakland never seems to be shy about trading when they start getting a surplus of similarly skilled players. I'd buy my relievers in free agency. This year's available bullpen arms might be unprecedented and the Twins have more money than they know what to do with. But this year I'd get the ones with plus velocity and preferably a tad younger.
  20. I wouldn't like that kind of employer either, and I loved the comfortable and history embracing atmosphere the team created through most of the early part of this centrury. But I'm tired of this club being soft and rolling over every time an Alpha team comes along, and I have a hard time not seeing a corolation. A lot of players probably wouldn't like that atmosphere, but really, I don't want those players either. I want the ones that are also cutthroat and will always put winning ahead of comfort. My previous affinity for the constant deferring to the team's history and family-first atmosphre always stemmed from the old World Series teams. Once they get there again I'll soften up and embrace that stuff again. But it's just been too long; time for business, not hugs.
  21. I agree, but asking the fans for patience with Buxton in particular would be easier if the rest of the team wasn't playing so poorly.
  22. Honestly, I want a Terminator in the front office. This organization has for so long put emotions ahead of sound baseball decision. I'm not saying our current Terminator is making sound baseball decisions, but I wouldn't have approached Dozier about an extension just because he was asking for one, I'd only do it if I actually wanted him back. Decisions on Mauer and Buxton should be based on what's best for the team, not the individual players (not saying they got it right, just that I don't want the players dictating the decisions). All this century we've been doing the "we are family" "aw-shucks" "let's just go out there and have fun" underdog bit. I've had enough. Maybe I'm a monster, but I want to win and at any costs. I don't think that starts with making concessions to players who aren't pulling their weight or aren't in the team's future. Let the field manager handle the human emotions, the motivation and the pep talks, that's supposed to be his job anyway. I want the guys actually running the show to make the best baseball decisions, even if it seems cutthroat.
  23. I think there are two main issues, one old school, one new school. As far as analytics go, I don't think this team is practicing what they preach. I just can't see any possible scenario where an in-depth dive supports giving players with no upside like Matt Belisle, Robbie Grossman, Johnny Field, Jake Odorizzi and so many of these other replacement level players so many looks. Maybe that weighs into Nick's last point, things are still coalescing, or maybe it speaks to the second to last point that there's a disconnect. My other main issue is the absolute lack of energy and enthusiasm. I know it sounds like a cheap shot and it is in no way measurable, but I'm putting that on Molitor. I don't believe the stereotypical stoic and emotionless Minnesota demeanor is appropriate for managing a baseball team in this centruy I wouldn't be excited about coming to work if my boss looks like he just put his dog down every day.
  24. I was hoping to see Collins, but there's always depth, the team just signed Bryan Witzmann to replace him. I'm sure he's nothing special but he did make 13 starts last year which means he's probably at minimum on par with Collins. The team has already made their bed going with replacement level O linmen, I don't think the depth is an issue because the guys available are likely no better or worse than the backups they already have. If Reiff goes down we probably have issues, and he's not terribly good either. However, everyone else is already so underwhelming I can't imagine we're going to notice.
  25. I don't think getting lucky on a draft pick in the 20s means you earned anything. Even if it wasn't lucky, even if it was incredible draft accumen, that one draft pick doesn't earn them what they've stumbled into. They never put enough focus on a defense that could carry the team and they never focus on pairing Rodgers with elite skill position players that could pick up the slack if he should go down. Their team is a house of cards, it really shouldn't still be standing with the same cross-our-fingers approach after all these years.
