  1. I agree, it's a great field. But I'd rather they play in a dump if it meant they'd invest that scoreboard money on the roster instead. I don't actually think it's an either or situation, I'm quite confident payroll and TF upgrades are under completely different auspices. But Pohlad doesn't do himself any favors by bringing it up when Hartman is asking him questions about the trade deadline and the playoffs. Or maybe Syd just isn't doing Pohlad any favors by adding that blurb in an article he decided to title: Twins owner Jim Pohlad fired up - and fearful - of playoff push But regardless where the failure of context lies, I think it brings up a fair point. Why do the Twins think they have to stay within their payroll lane in terms of market size, but are OK to join the elite organizations when it comes to facilities?
  2. But that's still not a reason, because there aren't financial issues at the deadline. Not this one anyway. To me it sounds more like Pohlad doesn't understand the situation and is preemptively preparing his 'You get a scoreboard instead' consolation speech even though no one has clued him in that giving that quote was as irrelevant as giving Rutgar Hauer's 'Tears in the Rain' quote from Blade Runner instead.
  3. I didn't catch that the first read. Who cares about the scoreboard? Yeah, I don't like that, why bring it up at all? It has nothing to do with payroll or the playoff push. Well it shouldn't anyway. Maybe it was out of context, Syd was the interviewer after all.
  4. Yeah, this one seems a bit odd. The Cardinals had a pretty good rotation coming into the year so it wasn't a surprise that one of them got squeezed into relief duty, but now Michael Wacha is being sent to the pen so you'd think they'd want Martinez around for depth if anything. Matinez's velocity isn't down, so I don't see any red flags there, but unlike other suggested trade scenario's, this one sounds too good to be true, something has to be off doesn't it? Maybe the Cardinals already decided that Ponce De Leon is the 5th starter going forward and Martinez made a stink about not getting another shot in the rotation? Perhaps it's just disgruntled starter syndrome? I'd love to have him.
  5. I really hope the Mets new GM/agent is as bad at trades as he is managing his field personnel. but I also don't see it helping the Twins this year considering Kepler is fairly essential to the lineup. Maybe in the off season should the Twins have a replacement ready to go for Kepler.
  6. Buxton was an honorable mention, but no sign of Berrios yet, looks like he'll be top 30.
  7. I don't like that they seem to try to bracket themselves with similar sized clubs every single year. Can't they spike into the top 10 in payroll some time when it's needed? As others have said, money isn't much of an issue this time of the year, but there are a couple of financially sticky guys who might be available. I'd like to see the front office make Jim put his money where his mouth is and go get Ian Kennedy. I'd personally be squeamish about Zack Greinke, but it sure would be fun to see the Pohlad's prove us doubters wrong, even if it turned out to be a bad move down the road. Yeah, and the Twins have removed the sinker from Martin Perez's repertoire and limited it from Kyle Gibson's. I don't think the front office was interested in that kind of pitcher, so I wouldn't judge that one based on salary.
  8. Yeah, the Giants look like a bad team that is still somehow winning a reasonable number of games. That 2nd WC in the NL is troublesome. I can't see St Louis, Philadelphia or Milwaukee waiving the white flag under any circumstance, so it would be real nice if two of them went on a blistering run ASAP. It sure would be a shame if SD, COL, AZ, SF, PIT and CIN all decide they're close enough to hang on to their players. Those teams have a lot of the arms I'd like to try to get. Or maybe even worse, if only one or two of those teams decide to sell, then they get to hold everyone over a barrel because of the lack of sellers. Sure seemed like last year it was a buyers market at the deadline; looks to be the opposite this year now that the Twins are shopping around.
  9. On the positive side, it looks like they've really improved his control as his BB numbers are down quite a bit. He's more hittable now though. Maybe there's a similar adjustment to remedy that.
  10. The Twins have a lot of corner-type prospects who by default will get their evals cranked down. Those guys still make up 56% of an AL lineup though which is one of several reasons I put much less weight on gradings dealing with defensive considerations.
  11. I thought you needed commish approval to trade an injured player. Though, it wasn’t called the IL from the time I’m recalling that nugget, so grain of salt there. Not that it should be a problem. If MLB let the Wilpons keep the Mets after the Madoff situation and the corresponding low payroll shenanigans, this probably wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.
  12. I love it. Swing changes seem to be a dime a dozen in the minors. If it isn’t working, you can be sure it will be scrapped. Tinker away Royce, we aren’t expecting to see you at the MLB level this year either way.
  13. I’ve met La Velle, he seemed like a really nice guy, easy to talk to and relatable. My immediate instinct is to defend him. That’s probably the same instinct La Velle gets while writing about the players, coaches and front office, and unlike me, he probably spent more than ten minutes getting to know his subjects.
  14. Nice list. Yeah, there's nearly a dozen names on that list the fans could/would/should resent losing. No better time than to start making some 3-1 or 4-1 trades.
  15. He was my adopt a prospect last year, and my bold prediction last Rule V was that it would be Stashak, not Jay, Diaz or Reed who would be selected. I was wrong but those other 29 teams look like they're missing out. Also the 30th team as well, because he should be on the Twins 25-man by now. But, boy, you know the Twins are having a good season when a 1B/C like Wilin Rosraio still hasn't sniffed the MLB roster. He's hitting well, could be a third catcher and has the veteran name people remember. Seems like typically he'd be the exact guy the organization would go out of their way to promote at the expense of the fans' eyes rolling out of their heads.
  16. I'm Ok selling off the livestock, but agree with the Thorpe/Smeltzer/Stashak takes. I'm a little worried that the Twins are going to find that the bullpen is all so perfectly mediocre that the decisions regarding it will be difficult to make. Rogers is the only guy who needs to be kept, but there's not any particular guy who's in imminent need of replacement.
  17. Probably a good move for Mejia. I think he might still be OK but he needs regular MLB reps. Hope he finds a spot to get them. In the NL.
  18. And all the starters might look better if Sano and Adrianza switched positions.
  19. Yesterday was Gibson’s first traditional outing that didn’t go five innings. After Berrios, he’s the starter I have most faith in. I’d move Odorizzi, Perez or Pineda first.
  20. But whatever is going on with Boyd, hats off to Rick Anderson if he had a hand in it.
  21. If we're talking about trading one of the team's top prospects for Boyd, isn't Boyd the overpay? People are talking about him like he's the hottest player on the market (not just here, he's gotten some really odd helium everywhere). His profile looks like a fluke to me. I can understand a starter getting good results for three months going almost exclusively to his only two good pitches, but I can't see that guy continuing to get good results much longer. The league is almost certainly going to catch up, that's why these guys almost always end up in the pen, starters without usable off speed pitches are rare. I'm more than happy trading for non-established pitchers thinking our team can get them going. I love the idea really. But I don't like this player, and I don't think he's being evaluated like typical non-established pitchers.
  22. Well I would say that after Cleveland got their new stadium in the mid 1990's and were good through the decade and into the early 2000's, they were almost always a top 10 payroll team. The Twins have cracked the top 10 once. Recent Cleveland teams haven't been given that luxury though. Good counterpoint though. They were competitive for a decade and didn't stress the front office about easing back on the throttle. Though, it's not like they were spending all that much to begin with.
  23. But only for three months. If kind of feels like people are looking at him as an established above average pitcher instead of someone who the Tigers probably had to have a serious discussion about offering arbitration to last winter.
