    I'm not sure how his managing approach was "hands-off and laid back". He was very hands-on from what I could tell. Pinch hitting for left handed hitters in the 3rd inning. Pinch running his best hitters on 1st base with 2 outs in the 7th for a runner that was only minimally faster. These were kind of Baldelli staples, and I think his over-managing was the biggest reason this team couldn't develop young offensive players. Maybe we'll find out it was all the fault of the front office, or maybe we'll never find out, but the odds say that Baldelli should have been able to make lemonade out of at least a few of those lemons, but he repeatedly proved unable to do so.

    I'm sure every owner in the game would be happy to revert back to the collusion era where payrolls were under 30M. The game was different back then. Their magic formula was signing the best free agent pitcher and extend their best player to a record contract. It wasn't special and secret, it was league wide competitive balance.

    I don't think it's terribly difficult for the grandson of a billionaire to get a degree, regardless of his competency in the course work. We're all probably being selfish, we should be thankful he wanted to run a baseball team. He could have wanted to be a brain surgeon or commercial airline pilot instead.

    I was surprised by that game. I thought the Rams would eat the 49ers for dinner.

    For the long term health of him as a person you'd think you'd want to avoid that. But if the muscle isn't contracting due to the botox, I have to presume it is a muscle that is not used or needed to pitch.

    The Strib article is behind paywall. Did the reporter doing the interview really not clarify with Joe if he meant the short term pain was last year's sell off, or if the short term pain was upcoming this off season? Because the 'try something different' and 'you got to own it' lines that follow sound like a reference to this past summer's sell off, implying that roster wasn't working and they needed to start over. This article makes it sound the other way around, and the worst is yet to come, which could be the case, but is there more dialogue in the Strib article to confirm that's what Joe was referring to?

    You might luck out on a lot of punts because I could easily see each team taking turns turning the ball over.

    I'm sure they'll keep Outman simply because they just traded for him, but I'd get rid of him. I'm sure the Dodgers where happy he hit a bit a couple years ago, but I don't think the Dodgers ever thought he was going to be anything special. 181 strikeouts in his unexpected season had to have been a sign that it was never going to work out.

    I agree, but I think he now has less of it. The Twins have been consolidating jobs left and right. The Twins kept Dave St. Peter on as an 'advisor', but they're still paying him, which was probably a negotiated severance. They're going to put him to work if they're paying him. And HR is probably doubling as janitors and PR is selling popcorn at the games. But I think this POBO job speaks to how little the Pohlad's value the Twins as a business. Derek Falvey's background is of a baseball scout. How in the hell is that relevant to maximizing revenue streams, creating a vision for marketing or overseeing ballpark operations? Things that the POBO should at minimum be overseeing. And the same was true with DSP. He was a law school intern that never ever practiced law. He has never had a job outside of working for the Twins, but he was in charge of negotiating FOUR terrible TV deals? These guys aren't qualified for the jobs, they were just already in the building and happy to take a promotion. The Twins are an afterthought at best for the Pohlads and a tool to serve their other businesses at worst.

    Reports are that Albert Pujols is the leading candidate for Arte Moreno and the Angels managerial job. So as I'll always vote to do the opposite of Arte Moreno, I'm saying no to the Hunter/Morneau/Cruz options. It's clearly a bad idea if the Angels are doing it.

    And that quote doesn't do the audio justice. His tone really implied that he thinks he absolutely NAILED free agency last year.

    Well, there's one teams' practice squad that will be over in England........ Honestly, if the Vikings grabbed a guy off of the Browns practice squad after the Browns paid to fly them out there, that would be funny as hell. On the Browns practice squad I see Guard Garrett Dellinger and Tackles Tyre Phillips and Joshua Miles. Looks like Phillips actually has quite a bit of NFL experience including 28 career starts.

    Radio on while running an errand: PA was on KFAN saying Brandel was taking snaps at center, and Ed Oliver was taking snaps at tackle. This is crazy. Both teams should consider punting on first down and seeing if their defense can win the game for them with a turnover or two.

    The Twins wouldn't pay for a mid-tier reliever let alone a closer even when they WERE willing to spend money. Any tier reliever they sign this year will be of the bottom variaty. But it doesn't matter, you can't buy a bullpen, you need to develop one through familiarity and then trial and error. There is next to no possible way this team can have a better than average bullpen prior to 2027.

    Based on these responses, expectations are going to be so low, Rockies and White Sox kind of low, that it actually won't be terribly difficult for a new manager to exceed them.

    If you're someone like me, and suspect that the blah prospect development can at least be partially blamed on the manager and coaching staff, than you'd also have to believe that it's possible a new manager and coaching staff may be capable of unlocking more potential than the current players have demonstrated. But yeah, it's still not an enviable position. It's almost an entire roster of post-hype prospects, which I'd guess don't historically have a high rate of turning it around.

    I did watch it, and I did post about it in another thread and I disagree that nothing was said there. Falvey's exchange with Darren Wolfson was telling: Darren Wolfson: "OK so why fire him?" Falvey: "That's a good question Doogie. Uh that's a conversation that works directly with ownership uh and ultimately a collaborative conversation for the right reasons to make the change." Dissecting that word salad says that the decision was made by ownership, not Falvey. https://www.fox9.com/video/1716270 If a largely hands-off ownership truly is the one telling the POBO to fire the manager, that has to be an encouraging sign about the POBO's lack of job security. The organization is probably in too much of a mess right now to look for a new POBO; maybe if Dave St. Peter still had the job Falvey would have also been replaced. But at least this possibly means if or when things are settled with ownership, more change is on the table if things aren't looking better.

    So the Browns clearly needed to bench Flacco, but it really feels like they're doing the Vikings a favor but doing it this week while traveling over seas. Dillon Gabrial can move as opposed to Flacco, but the Vikings are already in Europe, and Flores' defense is not rookie QB friendly even under the best of circumstances. Still, the Browns defense is also awesome. I don't expect it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that their D outscores the Vikings offense. But this looks like a roller coaster season for the Purple, I'm guessing this will be an 'UP' game.

    I wouldn't close the door on any of the coaches on the pitching side; the rotation and bullpen have been good for years when healthy. And not traded to every corner of the country. But I'd leave those decisions to the new manager. But based on how many times Derek Falvey said 'collaboration' in his last press conference, I'm quite confident the new manager isn't picking his coaches.

    Oh my god. Falvey: "This off season we invested in, brought in some guys that could really help us. Harrison Bader was a great fit for this club. Danny Coulombe played a really nice role. So did Ty France."
