2024 Other NFL Offseason News

I'm really hopeful the reason for the lackluster first two drafts was because they were trying to patch instead of build. Because these are the three areas you build with right? And they barely touched those spots in the two drafts. Hopefully if they take a step back and say, OK, now we need to concentrate on a long term vision, they will hammer OL, defensive front seven and QB spots. And hopefully if they go in knowing they need the long term vision, they'll let the draft picks play. And if they can get one of the top three QBs but have to sacrifice draft capital, I'm still game. It's obviously the position that can right the ship the quickest. -

If they lose them all, I don't want any patchwork big money free agents. Target players that should be good for another 3-4 years. No Chris Jones or Tyron Smith or Saquon Barkley in other words. -
I don't think it's the same result. Should be really bad with hope for the future, or have an outside shot of being good right away if they nail a rookie QB who's NFL ready. Signing a Russell Wilson or Baker Mayfield probably dooms to to mediocrity.

I didn't care much for that draft class at the time. Petty looks like he's going to be sitting on top prospect lists until he is promoted and CES's big strikeout issues, haven't been an issue for the Reds yet. But Hajjar and Povich ruined it for me. Two Big Ten pitchers in Rounds 2 and 3? With all apologies to local guy Max Meyer, who was the last good Big Ten starting pitcher in the majors? 44-year-old Rich Hill? Jim Abbot?

I don’t see the issue here. You have four infield spots and a DH. Lewis, Correa, Julien, Kirilloff and Lee could rotate through all of them. And the Twins will give them all every 4th or 5th day off anyway, so you wouldn’t typically even need the DH spot for the rotation. As for Martin specifically, we’ll see above but now add in the outfielder spots too.

Twins wanted Bryce Miller from Seattle
nicksaviking replied to Cory Engelhardt's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Probably had to be done prior to spring training. Trading a franchise staple a few weeks after the band got back together when everyone had warm fuzzy thoughts about the upcoming season is probably a bit of a clubhouse soul sucker. In that regard, the Mariners had the upper hand. -
Looks like the 1.2M I was looking at was last years salary, but Akers is a restricted free agent, so the Vikings can bring him back should they choose. Id choose others over him, but I guess he wouldn’t be at the complete bottom of my list.

You don't have to let those rookies go, you can send them back to St. Paul.

I completely agree and I really hate that philosophy. However, the leash does seem to be equivalent to the salary paid, which in this case is fairly minimal. Matt Shoemaker and his 2M salary was the only guy on a MLB contract that I recall being released. I'm confident I won't like the leash DeSclafani gets, but I'd bet it's less than the other new guys they paid more. And really a pitcher who's giving up 5+ runs an outing stands out as a failure way more than someone who's not hitting but being shrouded by eight other batters. Good lord, did I just suggest 4M was minimal. Sometimes I hate this world.

Joey Gallo remained on the team for the entirety of the 2023 season. So did Javier Vazquez. What playing time did they earn? Bundy, Archer, Simmons, Marwin Gonzalez, Logan Morrison. Never got released. The only one who did was Matt Shoemaker who was released after being on the 60 day IL first. Like it or not (hard 'not' for me) if they're paying a veteran a MLB salary and the veteran doesn't have the option to go to St. Paul, that veteran doesn't have to earn a dang thing.

Well it was either him or a rookie at this point and the rookie can be stashed. Obviously they 'value' everyone they pay a salary to, but I'm not sure that they value him with any significance. Even with less depth than the offensive side, I'd bet DeSclafani has a shorter leash than Santana and Margot.

I didn't hear about the ownership one. As for the medicals, I thought he said he wouldn't do that stuff at the combine but would provide them in sit downs with individual teams. Likely because then if/when something gets leaked, he'd have a short list of culprits. Either way, I can't recall a non-injured QB who ever had medicals that made teams run away screaming so I don't care about that. As far as ownership goes, I don't see the Vikings being the team to be the first to do that. Or first to do anything actually, we're followers, not trailblazers here in Minnesota. As long as having ownership wouldn't inhibit the team from trading or releasing him, I couldn't care less if he had a stake. -
I'm not sure I have much hope for meaningful production from DeSclafani even if healthy, but his 4M is half what they paid J.A. Happ so if we set the bar there, he should be able to clear that blindfolded and on roller skates.
-
How dare you besmirch Anthony Prato, he's going to be the next Ben Zobrist I tell you! Zobrist!!! But seriously, the best part about all of the guys the Twins could call up might be their positional flexibility. The Twins love to rest players, much to many fans chagrin. But due to this, everyone could play at least 4 games a week with how flexible most of the roster is.

I don't know, do the Giants and Mariners really pay 3/4ths of his salary if he has any value? Seems like the Twins were trying to get an actual pitcher for Polanco, but when they got rejected, they just grabbed the miscellaneous party favor bag on the way out instead.
-
There's so dang many that they could get one cheap. I'd be interested in a couple of under the radar guys actually. Antonio Gibson and DeeJay Dallas can both catch the ball and have quite a bit less wear and tear due to getting crowded out of touches the last several years. If they want a bruiser, A.J. Dillon is still fairly young and seems like a guy who might have something to prove.
-
I've been advocating for another Sanchez or Keuchel for AAA instead of guys like DeSclafani or Lorenzen or Clevinger and the like that we've been hearing about all winter. I don't like reunions, but that aside, Odorizzi might fit that bill if he can't get a MLB contract.
-
Is it? Are Santana, Margot, Farmer and Vazquez really competing against anyone? Does anyone really see the team DFA'ing any of these guys before August if they 'lose' the competition?

I think Miranda is in a bit of pickle regardless of how he plays. Kirilloff is the lefty side of the 1B platoon right now, so if he gets hurt again, do they turn to the right handed Miranda? Or do they move Julien over? Or do they call up the switch hitting Severino? For all of Santana's faults, he is really durable, and even if he stinks, I have a hard time seeing the Twins dump him, and you can't just hide a guy who can ONLY play 1B on the bench so I'm sure he's going to be playing quite a bit. Miranda's best hope might actually lie with Buxton. If Buxton stays healthy and plays 3-4 days a week in CF, maybe the team would entertain Miranda as a semi-regular DH if he's mashing in St. Paul.

Seems to me the offensive side of the lineup is pretty concrete regardless of their performances, which only opens up spots when injuries arise. I think the pitching side could open up due to ineffectiveness and obviously injuries tend to be more prevalent with them too. As such, I'd maybe include Canterino and Festa over Martin and Miranda. Just based on likelihood. Also, if the ranking is based on how 'impactful' they'll be, the offensive players will probably be at a disadvantage since regardless of performance, they'll likely be sent back to St. Paul once the vet they're replacing is healthy.

The whole world was aware of his injury issues I'm sure. I mean, he seemed like a salary dump, at least a partial one. The Mariners didn't have to eat his entire salary.
-
Yeah, that's the goal. The problem though is that the last two years Miranda (2022), Lewis, Julien and Wallner all came up when the vet in front of them got injured. When the vet came back there was room to keep them because the team just sent Larnach, Kirilloff, Cave, Garlick and Miranda (2023) down to St. Paul. Can't do that this year as there aren't enough players with options. So now what happens if Lee or whomever is raking at the majors and helping the team win games? They're going to get sent back down anyway when the vet returns.

Yeah, like Pablo Lopez, Sonny Gray, Kenta Meada and Jake Odorizzi. Every time! DeSclafani was a throw in piece of a trade that virtually nobody here was happy with, I wish him the best but he was always a long shot not to lose his job before June regardless of health. Speaking of, I'm in agreement with others, the delay due to 'elbow soreness' sounds like his previous elbow soreness kept him from being ready for camp, not current soreness. You wouldn't ramp up activity if it's sore now, you'd shut a guy down completely.

Hadn't thought of this, but does releasing Mattison mean the Vikings are keeping Akers? Cutting him would save 1.2M (I believe), but that's half of what the Vikings saved on Mattison. And I think Mattison is going to have a hard time in free agency. The list of free agent RBs is Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Tony Pollard, Austin Ekler, Devin Singletary, D'Andre Swift, A.J. Dillon, Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins, Antonio Gibson, Ezekiel Elliot, Zack Moss, Boston Scott, Rico Dowdle, D'onta Foreman and then a dozen other lesser RBs. Where does Mattison fit in that hierarchy? He's probably not top 10. Somewhere around the Ezekiel Elliot through D'onta Foreman tier?

Yeah, at this point, I'd think a non-contending team would still probably be interested in rostering Larnach. Normally he'd seem like a player you'd get a decent-but-not-elite relief pitcher for, but the Twins clearly don't need more of that. I'm not really interested in prospects at this point, but the best you could probably do is get some non-40 man kid in A ball with promise, or maybe a pitching version Larnach. Someone who's falling from grace but still has one option. Another club's SWR maybe.
