  1. How about not including the 10-outing cup of coffee rookie season when making an evaluation - since it's a ridiculously SSS. If you do that, his average WAR is just shy of 2. I'll take that for a 3-5 spot in the rotation, which is where most everyone I've seen defending him on here expects him to be. I don't think anyone is suggesting any longer that he's going to be a #1 or #2 - so everyone agrees with you that he's back of the rotation type of guy.
  2. I'm excited to see what the kid's got. If they can get Graham or Pressly-like results out of him, and it keeps higher upside guys like Mejia, Berrios, May, Gonsalves, etc. out of that spot, it's a win. I'm more interested in seeing if a young guy that could be around more than a year can do the job rather than a retread like Vogelsong. If this year is that of a mop-up role, so be it. Having 4 starters - assuming the starting 5 is what Tom suggested - that throw lots of pitches, but not many innings should allow him plenty of opportunities to develop. The one drawback I see is that with the amount of innings I see that swing guy having to throw, he could get overused and become less effective. It could be a revolving door out of necessity in that role this year.
  3. Precisely! It would be one thing if he wasn't below average at all of them, or if he hit well, or if he was effective on the basepaths. But being a jack of all trades is only a tool if you're serviceable at any of them DanSan isn't.
  4. Someone mentioned old DanSan as a pinch running option. That confuses me. I admittedly mix booze and pills from time to time, so perhaps I overestimated his ineptitude on the bases last year. I could've swore that he made Punto-like mistakes and was caught stealing almost as often as he was successful. Can anyone confirm? If I didn't hallucinate it, that means he's a terrible baserunner, below average hitter, barely passable defensive outfielder, and atrocious infielder. That about cover it? That, to me, doesn't equate to a spot on a 40-man roster, much less a 25-man or with an opportunity to start. Unless, of course, the other options are Drew Stubbs, Ben Paulsen and JB Shuck.
  5. The problem is Molitor can't be trusted to not play him unless absolutely necessary. He's been enamored with him forever ... he's his Punto.
  6. On what planet is Danny Santana a "good player?" I mean, I guess if you're comparing him to cadavers, the elderly, toddlers, people that have never heard of baseball, etc. he could be considered "good," but when compared to virtually EVERY player in MLB over the last two seasons he is statistically one of the absolute worst.
  7. “Working with Doug Mientkiewicz last summer really did me well,” Seems to be a pretty common theme. Better to keep him with the young kids or with the slightly older kids as a hitting/bench coach/manager in waiting?
  8. I never thought I'd say this, but if Stubbs, Paulsen and Shuck are competing with Santana, I'm cheering for Santana. If we're talking about low upside players, I'll take the youngest one and roll the dice.
  9. I think it's time for someone to step in and take Uncle Pat's cough syrup away from him.
  10. But seriously, that's the great thing about having all of these advanced metrics to judge performance on. It used to be someone - and to a lesser degree their "classic" stats - either passed the eye test or they didn't. Now, anyone with an internet connection can throw out a number that supports their admiration for whichever player they choose, while totally ignoring the ones that cast said player in a negative light and whether or not they still appear to be a productive player to the naked eye. So, I'm with you ... not all Ks can count against Buxton until further notice. Only those against lefties in the 6th inning or later of road games held on a Tuesday shall count.
  11. But, don't you member '09?
  12. Why do I feel like defending Mauer as an OBP machine/defensive stalwart/side-burned Messiah is the baseball version of "her emails tho?"
  13. Let's try this again ... "The reality of the situation is that Vogelsong is probably the #2 or #3 best pitcher on the staff."

  15. Some interesting pieces on here. Probably nothing to start a countdown clock on (although I'd love it if this new arm slot restarts "Burdi Watch"), but could all be solid contributors at some point.
  16. No worries ... Rob's got that spot on lock down. If he hits .642 against lefties it might almost make up for his "defense." (Having been in attendance for the 2-error play, I feel it my right to rip on his defensive prowess at any given moment.)
  17. I totally keep forgetting about the Vogelsong issue. I'd hope he's considered a long shot that would need to be Spring Training Cy Young to even warrant consideration, but I fear that's not the case. Can you imagine an Opening Day rotation of Santana, Hughes, Vogelsong, Gibson and Santiago, while Berrios and May hone their craft in upstate New York? *shuddervomit*
  18. I guess in this scenario, the dream would be Perkins is ready, Breslow is outperformed and accepts a AAA assignment (or isn't simply kept around because of "veteran presence") and Rogers keeps his spot. Then Perkins becomes trade bait, is shipped out for anything of value, Breslow is called up and becomes trade bait for anything of value right around the time Melotakis is ready to come up. I can't believe I didn't think of that sooner
  19. I'm pretty indifferent toward this move - so long as it doesn't come at the expense of Rogers. I'm assuming Perkins won't be ready out of the gate and Melotakis appears to be a mid-season guy. If he's competing for a spot with O'Rourke and Boshers, cool. But the nightmare scenario is Perkins is "ready" and Breslow does enough to earn Taylor a ticket to Rochester.
  20. Classic sidestep - answer the question without answering the question or providing reason for said answer
  21. My hope would be that if something were to happen to Buck in ST that was more than a 1-2 week thing, they'd turn the reins over to Granite. I'm not sure what kind of MLB upside the kid has, but we know that Drew's best days were about 7 years ago. Even if it was only for 1-2 weeks, I'd hope they'd shift the current guys around and make it work. If Stubbs is added to the 40-man roster at any point during the season, this season will have been an abstract failure.
  22. Having gone back and looked at Stubbs' career stats, I'd almost rather they'd signed Franklin Stubbs. We're talking about a guy that had one decent season in 2010 and then followed it up with poor showings 2011-2014 and absolute trainwrecks in 2015 and 2016. I never thought I'd say this, but I'd actually prefer DanSan over this guy.
  23. What a complete and total surprise ... a former Ranger/Indian signed to a deal. Low risk, no risk, don't care. The only thing more worn out than Stubbs' swing are the zippers on his luggage.
  24. If it did, I wouldn't mind. But given Robbie's defensive shortcomings (understatement of the century), I think they'll continue to view DanSan as a viable 4th OF. Light I'm not concerned about too much either way. But if the endgame is taking the Santana tool from Molly's belt, they need to just go ahead and do it. Unless the plan is to have Escobar spend more time in the OF, too.
  25. I give Rob zero credits. He started out hot and coasted the rest of the way to mediocrity. And he has to be handcuffed to someone who can play defense, because he certainly can't. Maybe this guy and ole Rob can count as one spot.
