  1. That's certainly the vibe you put out with your comment. I'm simply reacting to what you typed. I don't put much blame on Molitor for roster construction, but I find it hard to believe that he has no input. The two entities should be on the same page and working together, not independent of each other. It's a team sport, and the team does extend beyond the personnel on the field. They all hold responsibility for what happens on the field. Each is simply a different cog in the machine. If Molitor was advocating for a player, why would the FO take the time and effort to replace a guy the manager was happy with? Certainly not all of the blame goes to Molitor, but some most certainly has to in that scenario.
  2. Agreed, but his scenario included Molitor not wanting to upgrade either. So why does he not share in the blame in that scenario?
  3. But you're okay with Molitor advocating for him? Seems like both would share blame in that scenario.
  4. I guess that's part of my argument. Why wouldn't you maximize the few opportunities you do have? It's difficult to win scoring just one run and the odds are only marginally better than getting shut out, so why not try to score as many as you can? You're right though, this does get too much attention. Far bigger issues with this club.
  5. So shouldn't you try to maximize scoring chances instead of playing for one run an inning? It's one thing if it were late in the game, but the 4th inning isn't late in the game.
  6. I think this mentality is a lot easier these days. I know that it is for me. Players typically don't stay in one place very long, so its harder to grow a lot of sentimentality for a player. Mauer is one of those rarer players that has only played with one team his whole career (thus far). I do think there is something to be said about a player staying "home" and playing their whole career with one team, but it's got to end at some point. I'd rather see him retire than put on another uniform, but it's more that I'd rather him hang up his spikes before there's obviously nothing left. Go out on your own terms rather than being forced from the game.
  7. It's almost like the supporting cast around him got worse as time went on...
  8. I keep waffling back and forth on this. Part of me really wants to keep watching him play, but the other part of me wants him to go out while he's not just hanging on by a thread. It's always sad to me to watch former stars hang on to the bitter end as a shell of their former selves. I'd prefer Joe not to hit that point and go out with grace.
  9. This is an interesting aspect of the managers job. While I do think a manager will do more for the brand by winning, I don't think that HoF credentials are meaningless in this conversation. The fact that he's from MN only makes it a bigger impact. People like and want to be associated with successful people in hopes that some of that rubs off on them. I don't see that this case is all that different. The casual fan will be more likely to latch on to that when things are tougher. Winning however, takes care of all of that. While I've never liked the Molitor hiring, I have always thought it to be a pretty good marketing move. However, I don't want a marketing prop to be the manager. I have always hoped that I would be proven wrong, but I don't feel that way at all four years in.
  10. Hiring of the coaches and signing baseball smart players is about all I can hinge on the FO. But that comes in after faulting the players first and the coaches for not teaching and/or reinforcing the fundamentals. These are things that are taught at a relatively early age, but if the players aren't playing the game correctly it's up to the coaches to get them to. If the fundamentals weren't taught to a player before, it's up to the coaches to teach them. I don't think that it's a major league managers job to teach fundamentals generally speaking, but if they weren't taught or ingrained by this point somebody has to do it. I agree that an reaction to a given situation should be automatic, but that reaction is purely mental. The only physical part of it is the throw or catch or swing or whatever. But that reaction is started in the brain and being aware of what's going on around you within the game.
  11. From what I saw, all bases were covered properly. The pitcher covered home like he was supposed to and somebody, I assume the 2B, was covering second. My first reaction was that perhaps home wasn't covered, so he ate the ball so the runner couldn't score but Magill covered it properly.
  12. I agree with both of these things. My issue with the usage revolves more around how often guys are used (and not used) than which pitcher he uses in a given situation. He tends to run his best pieces into the ground to the point where they're no longer effective. At that point, I don't really care what other managers do, it's on him to figure out a way to keep his players effective.
  13. That's just it. He perhaps should be fired, but I don't see it happening either. The worst part of that is that it wasted 4+ years of what was supposed to be the young, up and coming core of the future of this franchise.
  14. They've been polling the season ticket holders for a few years now about start times. I do think it has more to do with the weather/temperatures than anything. It's a welcome change for me.
  15. They've been happening all season though. They've been a sizable contributing factor to why they are where they are. It's also been a problem for Molitor led teams for most of the time that he's been at the helm. It's not just this season.
  16. Mental errors are on the player first, coaching second. It takes no minimum level of skill to properly execute a play. The physical aspects of the game most assuredly rely on talent, but the mental part of the has no bearing on how talented a player is. So to say that these mental errors are on the FO is misguided. That's what coaches are for.
  17. Ha! So does that mean that Tim McCarver was the one that screwed up the rundown and not Garver?
  18. Incorrect. It belongs in no game. No game above t-ball anyway.
  19. What might bother me the most out of that play is that the shots of Molitor don't include any bulging, pulsating veins in his forehead or neck about to explode. His face isn't even red. How can you not be absolutely livid with that result? HOW?!
  20. OH. MY. GOD... Please tell me that I just watched a t-ball game because I can at least accept that outcome as being from a t-ball game.
  21. If I didn't already know that they didn't score, I would have bet that they got zero outs and both runners somehow scored. So I guess that I at least avoid that level of disappointment.
  22. Judging by the last two comments, Gamecast doesn't do that play justice. And I was on the phone, so I didn't get the radio call of it either. Now I'm very curious though and hope that I can find video of it so that I can join in the disgust fully.
  23. That's been a problem all season, though of one lately. Frustrating.
  24. Wasn't there already a female umpire? May have been in the minors, but I thought that there was one. May still be there for all I know.
