  1. My preference would be the Cuban guy, Yasmany Tomas if the Twins' scouts like him. He's risky, but some of the Cuban players have surprised to the upside and I think that his signing would boost ticket sales, especially if he pans out. I would also suggest that TR call Arcia and offer him incentives to come to spring training a couple of weeks early to work on his defense. I don't know what this might cost, but it would be pocket change compared with any of the free agents.
  2. There are some interesting and creative ideas here. My main quibble would be Santana in AAA. Odds seem high that Santana may need more time in AAA, but it seems to me that he should continue in the majors until he fails, at which point he can go to AAA to work on whatever flaws made him fail. I also think that Santana's defense in CF could improve with practice and if Molly can figure out that Santana needs to play about 10 feet deeper.
  3. I would hope that at the very least TR will have a face to face meeting with Maddon. It seems to me that Maddon's insights about the Twins could be valuable to TR. I also think that $5-7 million per year would be a good business decision, considering the morale boost for the fans and the players, plus making the Twins more attractive to free agents. The Twins could also offer Maddon an option to move up to the GM spot when TR retires, which is something that the Cubs cannot offer. Maybe the combined deal (manager then general manager) could be 6 or 7 years, which might also give an edge against the Cubs? It's painful to watch games and even more painful to go to the ballpark when the team is losing 90+ games per year. We fans need more reason to hope for better days. The Twins could spend big on free agents this offseason and we can argue about that until April, but Maddon seems to me to be far closer to a sure thing than any free agent, and it would be a business mistake not to make a serious bid for his services.
  4. I was hoping that stringer would move on to the pitchers and he has not disappointed. I don't know how stringer finds the time to do such a great job on these articles. I do know that every one of them has been excellent and has promoted interesting discussion. Thanks, stringer.
  5. If gambling were legal I would take that bet. It seems to me that Hughes will be treated as the ace until someone else earns that role. I can see Nolasco getting the opening day start only if Hughes is injured.
  6. I heard TR say that in the conference call and now it seems that he may be backtracking. I also heard TR mention that $100 million should be enough. I would like to see the Twins focus on one quality acquisition, not spread the money around. We fans need something to be excited about.
  7. I would hope that he works on two things during the offseason -- fielding and hitting curveballs. With enough practice, I believe that he could become a plus outfielder, but maybe he would play better in LF than RF. I also believe that he needs to take a lot of live BP with pitchers who have decent curveballs.
  8. I always research charities on Charity Navigator before writing a significant check. Here is their report on this one: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7032#.VCW4ivldV1Y
  9. That video is worth watching!!! I especially liked the ending. I wonder if there was a problem finding a shirt that was big enough for Vargas? For those of us who don't tweet, you might want to post a link to where we can send a check.
  10. This is a very interesting article that I am sure will provoke some interesting responses. Thanks, SD.
  11. This article made me feel good. It's great to hear that Twins' prospects are so active in helping their communities.
  12. Thanks Parker. You do an amazing job explaining things.
  13. Nick, as you have stated, a player's defense can improve, as in the case of Plouffe. My theory is that the best way to teach defense is repetition in a simulated game situation and that some players need more repetition than others. When I coached little league, we had a kid from Russia on the team. The kid had never touched a baseball and did not possess any skill whatsoever in catching a ball, even a tennis ball. We spent many hours throwing the ball then hitting the ball to this kid and a few others. By the end of the year, the kid was able to make a game winning catch. I wonder how much time Arcia spends during the off season shagging balls hit by a live hitter. If Arcia worked diligently with good coaches to improve his defense, it seems to me that he could become a solid defender. He is not slow and his arm seems strong. With enough practice in simulated game situations, it seems to me that Arcia could learn to take better routes to the ball and make better throws. Maybe what works in little league stops applying at some level? My theory is that the best way to teach defense is repetition in a simulated game situation and that some players need more repetition than others, but improvement is always possible with repetition. Am I just dreaming, or could Arcia get a lot better with an optimum training regime?

  15. Maybe the 9th round is the lucky round? Great article.
  16. Thanks, Seth. I am wondering which, if any, of these prospects has significant potential to be an ace or a #2.
  17. Congratulations to the Miracle, and thanks to Seth for the article. I look forward to seeing the prospect descriptions for these players in this winter's handbook.
  18. We can argue about who deserves blame There are lots of candidates -- * the coaches * the players * the pitching staff * the defense * the minor league coaches * the scouts * the front office It seems to me that we will never have enough data to apportion the blame with any degree of accuracy. I believe that this debate is interesting, but think that people should keep in mind that there are alternative explanations for every deficiency in the team's performance.
  19. Thanks for posting this. I love the fact that so many prospects are getting playoff experience, and winning. Hopefully some of this will gradually bubble up to the MLB level.
  20. I love these articles where the videos illustrate the analysis. Well done.
  21. This has been an interesting thread, and people have been frank yet respectful. Nick, you have done a great job of keeping this interesting and you have received some great analysis from our members. I tend to agree with those who would like to see the Twins go for an ace and a LF. Most of us seem to view these positions as areas of need, but some people have expressed concern about the likelihood that an ace free agent would want to play for a 90+ loss team. I wonder if Scherzer might appreciate the benefits of playing at Target Field and the general ambiance of the Twin Cities. Maybe Scherzer appreciates the devotion/class of Twins fans that he sees when he plays at Target Field and maybe he would like to be the undisputed leader of a pitching staff. Maybe Scherzer would like to be part of a rebuilding effort that will soon include Buxton, Sano etc. If the Twins were to offer top dollar, it seems like Scherzer might logically conclude that playing for the Twins could be his best move.
  22. Interesting article, Nick. Do you see Berrios as a potential ace?
  23. I would guess that Polanco would be thrilled with a call up, even if he were told up front that he might not play at all. Wouldn't this give him a month of MLB minimum salary and an opportunity to work out with the team every day? Polanco may or may not turn out to be a MLB regular. But it seems to me that a call up would be a cost efficient way to show appreciation for his good performance so far and possibly to slightly improve his skills.
