  1. In the article, Willingham gives credit to Span and Revere for getting on base ahead of him, the he says: "We'll have to get some people to step up and pick up some of that slack. There's going to be a lot of opportunity there for those guys. We'll see what happens." I share his concern about the need for someone to step up to at least partially replace the production of Span and Revere.
  2. I would hope that if Appel is available, the Twins will take into account the benefit of drafting someone who is close to ready to pitch in the majors.
  3. I am going to take a shot at this one. A friend is going to Vegas next week and I gave him the money tonight. I agree that the Twins could come in last and be very bad, but I believe that there is a good chance that the pitching will be better this year.
  4. Good speech my friend -- you are a natural!
  5. It sounds like he is in great physical condition. If that can translate into an MVP level performance, then I would hope that the Twins offer an extension before thinking about trading him.
  6. By the time Sano makes it to the majors, there might be a need for a corner outfielder, and his strong arm might be valuable in right field.
  7. I have been thinking of a trip to Vegas anyway, to visit my favorite living art gallery. This seems like a good bet to me.
  8. If all goes reasonably well, I would guess that the Tigers will win 95 games. But maybe Top Gun has something there with the Indians, despite what Vegas thinks. My understanding is that the Indians made good some moves during the offseason.
  9. This is a great thread -- both the original post and the comments. Thanks, gunnarthor.
  10. I don't know whether teams do exit physicals, but they seem like a good idea.
  11. As an added bonus, if Harden is good, then he might become very valuable as the trade deadline approaches.
  12. That would make for a good season for me, no matter what else happened!
  13. My numbers were rough estimates. My point is that a $10 minimum wage might cause some modest price increases, but the effect will be substantially offset by the increased spending power of the employees. Remember Henry Ford's insight about the benefit of having employees who could afford to buy his cars? If that's not enough, please ask yourself what kind of country we live in where an employee busts his/her ass 40 hours per week for $14,500 per year? Shouldn't these people get more? Absent proof that a higher minimum wage will materially harm the economy, I would give the benefit of the doubt to the workers. Please note that my preferred solution would be to stop the large retail and fast food employers from inhibiting unionization. I know that Walmart saves shoppers money by paying very low wages, but I also resent the fact that many Walmart employees make so little money that they need food stamps and other benefits to get by. Those food stamps and other benefits cost us money, while Walmart scores the benefit.
  14. Feel it from me. I genuinely consider you as my brother. We are part of an elite minority of Twins fans who get to read some of the most insightful articles ever written. Yes, in the forums we sometimes have to wade through mud to get to the green grass, and sometimes there is unnecessary bickering, but we choose to be here, together.
  15. Thanks for the link, and after reading this article, your comments make sense to me.
  16. Great thread and great responses. I am going out on a limb here and predicting that at least one of Deduno or Blackburn will surprise us and emerge as a solid starter.
  17. They paid a lot for Minier -- does anyone know much about him? Also, is Antonio Tovar related to past Twins great Cesar Tovar?
  18. A.J., I very much appreciate all of your posts. I am sending positive energy to your rehabbing wrist.
  19. I am hoping that Worley earns this honor. He seems to have the most upside of the likely candidates.
  20. You forgot to say "my brother".
  21. Here is what he said: "We know our economy is stronger when we reward an honest day’s work with honest wages. But today, a full-time worker making the minimum wage earns $14,500 a year. Even with the tax relief we’ve put in place, a family with two kids that earns the minimum wage still lives below the poverty line. That’s wrong. That’s why, since the last time this Congress raised the minimum wage, nineteen states have chosen to bump theirs even higher. Tonight, let’s declare that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty, and raise the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour. This single step would raise the incomes of millions of working families. It could mean the difference between groceries or the food bank; rent or eviction; scraping by or finally getting ahead. For businesses across the country, it would mean customers with more money in their pockets. In fact, working folks shouldn’t have to wait year after year for the minimum wage to go up while CEO pay has never been higher. So here’s an idea that Governor Romney and I actually agreed on last year: let’s tie the minimum wage to the cost of living, so that it finally becomes a wage you can live on." A higher minimum wage may make that value meal cost $4.25 instead of $3.99, but more people will be able to afford it.
  22. Here is what he said: Through tax credits, grants, and better loans, we have made college more affordable for millions of students and families over the last few years. But taxpayers cannot continue to subsidize the soaring cost of higher education. Colleges must do their part to keep costs down, and it’s our job to make sure they do. Tonight, I ask Congress to change the Higher Education Act, so that affordability and value are included in determining which colleges receive certain types of federal aid. And tomorrow, my Administration will release a new “College Scorecard” that parents and students can use to compare schools based on a simple criteria: where you can get the most bang for your educational buck. Maybe he is on the right track?
  23. He mentioned both -- accountability regarding drones and the need to clamp down on North Korea. I am not sure how sincere he was about the drones, but he did cover both of these topics.
  24. I referred to the 1950's in my post, because I am pretty certain that in the 1950's that was happening a lot. I would hope that it's no longer happening, my brother, but I don't know.
  25. Thanks, old friend and now my brother. Your posts have greatly added to the richness of this site and I have enjoyed our camaraderie. Your posts made it easier for me to get through the disappointments of last season. That reminds me. It's easy to make friends on this on this site if you are open to the idea. And you can passionately disagree and debate yet remain friends.
