  1. I agree that the ends do not generally justify the means. But given sufficient provocation, I believe that there may be exceptions. For example, what about someone who is wrongfully imprisoned for life in a foreign country who kills an abusive guard in order to escape? Or a black man who is on death row in Georgia in the 1950's for a crime that he did not commit? I would also note that there are a lot of fictional works where "anti-heroes" are celebrated -- "Dirty Harry", the "Punisher" and "Rorschach" of the Watchmen come to mind, not to mention Rambo in the first movie, where he killed law enforcement officers who were corrupt. I also remember seeing "Mandingo" in 1975 at a theater in an African American part of town. During the first half of the movie, the white people did bad things to the black people and there were boos. Then the black people (justifiably) did bad things to the white people and the crowd went wild. I am uncomfortable with this whole situation. I was here for the Rodney King riots when LAPD ran and hid and I hope that nothing like that happens here.
  2. I am a big Plouffe fan, but I do think that he needs more focus. I remember a game in Anaheim two years go where Plouffe was playing second base. There was a guy on first and one out. A sharp grounder to the shortstop should have resulted in a double play. But Plouffe touched second and headed toward the dugout. Plouffe thought that there were already 2 outs. The Angels fans mocked him. I think that Plouffe could hit 40+ home runs and win a gold glove at third base if he could increase his focus.
  3. I just read his manifesto. I hope that the LAPD is not as bad as he alleges. But I also think that his allegations should be thoroughly investigated. Rambo just wanted to be left alone. This guy is threatening tens of members of the LAPD and their families. I don't remember anything like this ever happening before -- in some ways he is like a comic book super-villain. And the cops are so freaked out that they shot people in a vehicle just because it was similar to Dorner's vehicle. This is from CNN: "In Torrance, LAPD officers guarding one of Dorner's alleged targets mistakenly opened fire on a blue pickup truck that resembled one Dorner was thought to be driving, said Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck. The gunfire left two people wounded, Beck said. Torrance police also fired on another blue pickup, but no one was injured in that incident, according to a senior law enforcement source." If there is significant truth in what Dorner has alleged, then some may see him as a hero. If the LAPD is indeed tolerating police brutality and racism, then some good may come of his actions, if the media finds abuses and they are addressed. But, even if the LAPD is rotten to the core, I would worry about future waves of vigilantes if Dorner is treated as a martyr.
  4. Morneau will be age 30 this June and there are reports that he is finally healthy. Would it make sense to offer him a new contract?
  5. Great post, as usual. Could his upside be as high as Rod Carew?
  6. This is an interesting article. If Boyd can keep in shape, it sounds like he may have a high upside.
  7. If Plouffe can sustain some hot streaks and keep his thumb healthy, why couldn't he hit 30 homers this year?
  8. Thanks for posting this comprehensive list -- very informative and well done.
  9. I am loving all of the recent optimism. Please keep it up guys.
  10. What if he gets injured or has a bad first half? Your strategy is intriguing, but also seems fairly risky.
  11. Thanks, Nick. Things may not work out as hoped this year, but you give cogent reasons to be hopeful. I plan to remain hopeful at least until the end of April, even if the Twins lose their first 20 games.
  12. Thanks, Snepp. Your post is beyond awesome.
  13. I love Dozier's attitude. Also, his analysis as to where he went wrong last year makes sense. Hopefully he has now figured it out.
  14. Here is another tutorial about framing.
  15. I watched the video, and it made sense to me. Yes, the catcher's mitt blocks the view at the last instant, but the ump is looking over the catcher and can see the mitt and whether it is moving.
  16. I like Jokin's idea of trying to teach him to throw a good cutter to keep hitters off balance.
  17. I like the idea of Bourn, but only if the price is right and the plan is to trade him around midseason for prospects. I would hate to see him block Hicks and Benson for the entire season.
  18. I concede that you are probably correct, but I am trying to enjoy the postseason for as long as possible until reality takes over in April. I am still harboring fantasies of Deduno winning game 7 of the 2013 World Series by striking out 10+ Dodgers.
  19. Isn't there some reason to be hopeful about Hermann? His minor league stats seem decent to me.
  20. It seems to me that Doumit has a better chance of improving his defense than Butera has of improving his offense. That said, I hope that by 2015 the Twins can develop someone who can provide above-average offense and defense, because Mauer's defense seems to be declining.
  21. I saw Hendriks pitch in Anaheim last year, in the game where Weaver threw the no hitter. It seemed to me that Hendriks did not have anything resembling an "out pitch." It seemed to me that the Angels hitters were fouling off a lot of pitches until they got something to hit. If Hendriks could develop an "out pitch" (or something that would at least keep hitters off balance more), then I think that he could be great. I wonder how difficult it would be to teach Hendriks to throw a decent slider or a better changeup. I also wonder if Johan Santana might be available as a pitching instructor after next year.
  22. I hope that his positive attitude and work ethic are contagious.
  23. Assuming that you are not being factitious, what did you like about Smith's regime?
  24. My understanding is that Sano is pretty fast and has a good arm. Maybe he would be more valuable in right field than at first base?
  25. I am still holding on to a faint hope that the Twins will surprise everyone.
