  1. I am sorry to hear that my friend, and will drink in his honor when i eventually get home.
  2. Until the last 2 games, there were a lot of posts on TD talking about how the front office had totally screwed up and how the Twins are going to have a terrible record this season. Since today's win, there has been a lot less of that. It seems to me that the certainty of people's negative opinions has been eroded by the last two games. Maybe the front office did an OK job and maybe the Twins might even look like contenders for some part of the year? Maybe some of the players just got off to a slow start, but something is now clicking? I am not saying that I think that the Twins will have a good record at the end of the season, but I will say that it seems to me that the Twins may catch fire and stay on fire and it's even possible that Molitor's ways take time to yield fruit, but it might be worth the wait. I understand all of the arguments that the front office bungled this season, but I see some glimmer of hope based on the past two games. I also see a more positive potential in some players than I would have expected from reading posts on TD. For example, maybe Milone is not a terrible pitcher. Maybe his stuff is not great, but he is good at fooling hitters? Maybe Torii is a poor fielder, but he sometimes gets 3 hits in one game to help defeat the defending AL champs? I am not trying to sell kool-aid here. I won't be surprised if the Twins lose 100 games. On the other hand, at least until the next terrible game, I am going to enjoy the thought that the Twins may have a decent season.
  3. I think that there are many potential silver linings -- Santana getting a chance at SS -- despite today's performance Dozier maybe getting better Arcia having a chance to get better Gibson maybe becoming a reliable #2 May possibly establishing himself as a reliable #3 Hicks getting at least one more chance, with some chance of success Mayer, Berrios, Sano and Buxton possibly coming up Ervin Santana will be rested when he comes back Possible trades of players who don't fit in with the future if they can build some trade value, including Hunter, Pelfrey, and Nolasco. I acknowledge that the silver linings are exceeded by the clouds. I especially dislike the very poor fielding. On the other hand, I am hopeful that Molitor will make players work hard to improve their fielding. I think that the keys to improving fielding are desire, practice and concentration and I hope that Molitor makes this a priority.
  4. I have thought about this. It seems to me that the biggest obstacle would be money. It costs a lot of money to get on enough ballots to make a difference and get the message out to enough voters, including older people (who are high propensity voters). My son says that it does not matter very much who gets elected, because the powerful special interest groups will continue to limit any real change no matter what. I disagree. I concede that both of the current parties are largely controlled by big donors, but it seems to me that the Dems are at least 10% less loathesome. My fantasy is a third party that is socially liberal, fiscally responsible and progressive in terms of giving more people a fair chance. However, absent campaign finance reform (which seems futile unless at least one redneck is replaced on the Supreme Court), I am not optimistic.
  5. Boyer seems to be serving up one meatball after another.
  6. I wonder why Zuke is not better at throwing to second base.
  7. I am not liking the home plate umpire.
  8. Santana!!! We are still in this.
  9. Give Hughes credit for not giving up a run after the 2 errors,
  10. Nice hustle by Nunez to stretch that to a double.
  11. Whew, I have a Vegas bet for the Twins to win the division, and I would like to keep some hope alive.
  12. This is getting sad. Escobar is usually reliable.
  13. Nunez needs to focus more. That was sickening.
  14. Hughes may or may not be an ace, but Samplesize was a solid #2 in pitching today's game thread. Nice work Samplesize.
  15. I feel a need to preserve both ends of the spectrum and everyone in between so long as they follow TD policy.
  16. Chief would not lie, under oath or otherwise. The moderators are unpaid volunteers whose goal is promoting interesting discussion of baseball. Our primary targets are personal attacks and trolling. Some of us tend to be negative and some of us tend to be positive, but we all enforce the same rules which any TD member can read -- they are in a thread that is stuck to the top of this forum. Before issuing infractions, we often discuss the situation among ourselves, and we sometimes discuss infractions after they are issued. As Chief stated, we don't issue infractions for being too negative or too positive. We do issue infractions for personal attacks and trolling. If anyone wants to know where the lines are drawn, they need only read the policy statement.
  17. It's marginally OK to use the term "Negative Nellies" in this thread where we are discussing negativity. However, if I see that in a general baseball thread then I will be inclined to issue an infraction point, because it would violate out rule against personal attacks. Personally, I sometimes get annoyed with the same people making the same negative comments over and over in multiple threads, but I am OK with that so long as the posters are respectful of others. The same applies to the "Positive Petes".
  18. Thanks, Seth. I have missed these reports and am grateful for the hard work and the expert analysis.
  19. As head moderator I can assure you that moderators never use their powers as moderators to persecute anyone who disagrees with them or even taunts them. Most of what we do involves trying to convince a handful of TD members to refrain from personal attacks and trolling. I have enjoyed your debate with diehard and I learned from each of your posts. One of your posts came off as somewhat sarcastic, and other than that I think that you have contributed to the discussion, as has diehard. My heart agrees with you -- maybe Mayer might be like Santana and blossom in a spot start then go on to win rookie of the year. My heart loves your argument. But my brain agrees with diehard -- pitchers usually fare worse when they come up and it will be easier for Meyer to fix his mechanics without the added pressure of the show. MAYBE the synthesis of these two positions is that some minority of pitchers have a propensity to catch fire when they hit the show, and the only way to find out is to call them up. Then the issue would be whether it might damage a pitcher psychologically to get called up and fail miserably. That's why I like the idea of a last minute spot start, so that there will be less disappointment if he walks a lot of batters and/or gets shelled.
  20. It seems to me that attacking Nolasco for not hiding a desire to be in Los Angeles is being oversensitive. I would like to have a pitcher who talks incessantly about his affection for some other city if he could pitch 200 innings for the Twins and get 200 strikeouts. In fact, I would like to have five of such pitchers, and they could even wear "I love LA" tee shirts whenever they are not in uniform. I also suspect that other Twins players and many players on other teams would prefer to play in Los Angeles -- great weather, better endorsement deals, wilder parties, etc. I understand that it is a little inconsiderate to the fan base if a player publicly expresses affection for another city, but I would hope that we have sufficiently thick skins to not hold grudges about a tweet or two that was not intended as a slight to the Twins. It seems to me that Nolasco is doing his best, and that we will know soon whether that will be good enough. I also hope that May and Meyer knock loudly on the door by being lights out in AAA. I also don't understand attacking Nolasco or any other player on the grounds that he has been vastly overpaid relative to his body of work, UNLESS there is real evidence that the player is not giving 100% to the team. If Nolasco is working as hard as he can to succeed and he still fails, then he is a bad player but not a bad person.
  21. It is still early in the season. Maybe the Twins will start a winning streak tomorrow. Based on history, things will get a lot more positive in here if the Twins can reel off three or four nice wins. Chief makes a good point about allowing young players to season. In particular, it seems to me that Meyer and May might each benefit from a little more time at AAA, but I am hoping that May comes up very soon.
  22. Is it too soon to mention that the Twins might be getting one more high draft pick based on another disappointing season? I was hoping to save that bit of optimism until May, but this game and the last game have been depressing.
