I'm not concerned about the options. If he's not ready to stick in the ML after 3 years, he probably wasn't as good as we all hoped anyways. And just because he is expected to start next year in Fort Myers, a player of his age and perceived ability should be able to start climbing the ladder more than one level per season. So we can figure out what to do about that if/when the time comes. I would add him for the aforementioned reason that there will be plenty of spots available.
Gomez had struck out 6 times in the series prior to this AB. How many times did a Braves pitcher show up Gomez after the punch out? I would guess none. If Gomez wants to show up his opponents he should join the NBA.
While I don't disagree with Ryan's approach to free agency at the present moment, what reason do I have to believe that Ryan will make that big trade or free agent signing when the Twins are competitive again?
Even if Mauer can't provide enough value at 1st base, would you rather have him at 1st, or not at all? Because if he keeps catching and taking more fouls to the head, the "not at all" could become reality.
Every time I see a relief pitcher go under the knife, it seems like more evidence that mechanics (and maybe even just bad luck) have a greater impact on health than pitch count. Why else would guys who throw 60 innings a year ever have to get TJ surgery?
I learned a long time ago not to get my hopes up when an opportunity like this comes along. Even though the Twins have never had a better opportunity to splurge on a player like this, I would be shocked if it happened.
I'm sure some people will disagree with the inclusion of guys like Stewart and other recent draft picks who have little to no professional experience, and I can understand that. However, Keith Law makes it clear in his intro that these rankings are by and large based on upside/ceiling. So proximity to the majors is not really a factor.
