  1. As a fellow left hander, I would just have to say that we are awesome. Pretty much awesome at everything. As a Twins fan, I'm going to say that I don't care if they break camp with a rotation of 5 RHP. I just want the best rotation possible.
  2. Which is why I'm now getting ads for hotels in Rio. You'd think that bikini clad women would accompany that, but no...
  3. John, if you're buying Belgian sours at Mason's, I'll be happy to take one.
  4. Good chat guys. I didn't get to listen to until this morning, but keep up the good work.
  5. I had to pick Nolasco. I was down to him and Hughes. I think it will be close with those two.
  6. They Yankees have signed some bigger free agents (Ellsburry and McCann), for slightly less than what it took to sign Cano. I wouldn't say they're flush with cash if they still plan on getting under the luxury tax. I also don't think that the would hesitate to spend money on a play that they really want. I still think that if the Yankees really want Tanaka, they will pay to get him, but it's not necessarily a foregone conclusion... yet.
  7. I wouldn't go as far as "genius", but the words "less bad" would seem appropriate.
  8. Ask if Gardy has given him a nickname yet.
  9. The booing comes from all kinds of bad mouthing he did about the Twins organization after they traded him. At least that is what I recall. It was so long ago, I don't even remember why I boo him. It just is tradition at this point. As for Hughes, I really like the price. The years are a bit of a gamble, but let's hope that Hughes just needed a change of scenery to really unlock that potential. Now the important question, do you think Gardy is going to call him Hughesy, Huey, or just Philly?
  10. (slow clap) Well done, sir. Well done. Do you think Gardy is going to start calling him Lascy? I hope so! Lascy!
  11. The only thing that needs to be said: You can never have too much starting pitching.
  12. This year the deadline for accepting/rejecting a QO was Nov.11th. Teams have 5 days after the world series to make the offer, and players have 7 days after the offer has been made to make up their mind. Just like many of these types of things in the baseball world, teams and players waited until the last day to make their decision. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/explaining-qualifying-offers.html Nick, good article. This has been an interesting off-season for the Twins so far, only in the fact that they're getting a lot of national press and getting connected to higher level free agents than previous years, as others have said. The child-like fan in me thinks that this time the Twins mean it, and they're going to sign some good starting pitching. They realist fan is a lot more skeptical. I also don't expect anything to happen until the winter meetings though, and I think there will still be plenty of worthwhile guys available during the meetings as well.
  13. I won't be able to watch it live, but I'm looking forward to the chat tonight.
  14. Great question. Fielder's production has been trending the wrong way. It may not look that way next year when he's hitting home runs all over the place in June in Texas. But, even with that, I'm betting that his best years are behind him. Kinsler is an absolute no.
  15. I agree with you on Duensing. I wouldn't say Ryan failed if Swarzak ends up getting a spot start or two in a double header or something like that. If Swarzak is in the the starting rotation, then yes, probably a failure. My gut says that they were told to prepare to start as an extreme backup plan. We can only hope that is the case.
  16. If you have been under a rock, them I'm there too. I've never heard that one before.
  17. Good job again guys. I think we can all agree that you two should probably keep the role playing to a minimum though.
  18. First of all, welcome to TD! I still bought my season tickets this year. I really wanted an All-Star game package. I still really enjoy going to games, because even a bad day at the ballpark is better than most other days. I probably will cancel them after this year if there isn't any visible improvement in the team though. All that said, I don't really think that we have to worry about the Twins being the cubs of the AL. Some people will show up no matter what, but there are far too many games for them to be sold out all the time like the cubs. MN fans are more discerning than that. There are are perfect examples: The Timberwolves. I know they look pretty good at the moment, but they have been bad for a long time, and some people go to the games. But remember, it was just a few years ago that they were giving tickets away so that the stadium didn't look empty on national TV. I think that's proof that MN fans will stop going if they don't get to see a reasonable product.
  19. James agrees with this. James also thinks more people on TD should talk like Ricky Henderson. In the podcast they mentioned that a scout said that Buxton's floor was around a Torii Hunter level. That's his projected floor!!! That part is nuts. When asked about Buxton's ceiling, the scout apparently laughed and basically said the sky is the limit. Threw out... Willie Mays. If we don't get Willie Mays level of play, James will settle for Ricky Henderson.
  20. Agreed. It was fun to yell "Let's go Cletus" while at Twins games though.
  21. It appears as if our old friend, Clete Thomas, has agreed to a minor league deal with the Phillies. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/phillies-sign-clete-thomas-cesar-jimenez.html Not a big loss in my opinion.
  22. Ok. You have to also have to be able to back up your first offer with some sort of logic. So offering 2/10 would have actually been insulting and probably would have shut the negotiation down right away, especially because he was already making $10.5M for just 2009, and scheduled to make $12.5M in 2010. Offering up a 50% raise isn't exactly insulting, but the Twins probably knew that it would take more in years and dollars.
  23. This all funny to me. I'm taking a negotiations class right now, and one of the first things they teach you is that your first offer should be higher (or lower if you're buying) than anything you actually expect to get. So, the Twins opening with 5/90 ($18M/year) isn't exactly an insult. It's just a starting position. I don't think that they reasonably expected to sign him for 5/90.
