  1. What I was suggesting was not that Drew Butera can hit, rather that if you gave Eric Fryer a similar number of plate appearances in a season, that there is a solid chance his BA would not be over the Mendoza line either. Back on topic: I don't think the Twins are planning to package Murphy with Plouffe. I don't see it really happening. They will definitely add some AAA catching depth though. As far as Butera goes, I think he'll find a major league contract as a backup catcher somewhere. Possibly even back in KC. They might even offer him arbitration as he's not going to be more expensive than any other backup catcher they find. Either way, I don't think he'll take a minor league deal.
  2. Fryer may have better batting averages, but you really can't include those seasons by themselves. Sure, he did hit .250 in 2012. He also only had 5 PA, so that's not really a great sample. Butera has had MLB 853 PA's vs Fryer's 158. I'm not defending Butera's hitting, but there isn't a big enough sample to say that Fryer is a much better hitter.
  3. I think the article posted on the main page as I was starting the topic. Oh well. I should have known someone else was on top of this one.
  4. Correct, but roster has to be set by Nov. 20th. A team can't add someone to the 40 man after this date to protect them from the rule 5 draft. It's also my understanding that they would need one open space to select someone in the rule 5 draft. I'm not sure if they can outright a player before that to add an open space for the draft. So, the fact that Park has to be signed before the draft either means that the Twins will only protect 5 players, leaving one open spot for Park, or they're going to fill up the roster completely and do not plan on making a rule 5 selection this year. I guess we'll find out on Friday.
  5. I believe that the deadline to reach an agreement is the day before the actual rule 5 draft. Teams need to submit their 40 rosters by Friday, Nov 20th. I would think that they might try to slip someone through on the 20th, but they may not have to. I'm also assuming that they may keep one spot open in case they would like to select a player in the draft. It could be that they don't have the deal with Park worked out yet. I don't know how long it would take to negotiate a contract like this. I'm sure there is some terms that they have to hash out, as well as a physical. So, those things take some time. I would still expect a deal a little before Thanksgiving (wild speculation on my part).
  6. That was exactly the scenario I was describing. Unless the Twins feel that they have more spots on the 40-man than guys worth protecting, they will fill it up. You are correct though, one guy will have to be outrighted off the 40-man roster when they sign Park. If they had one more spot on the 40-man than prospects they want to protect, then this whole conversation has been pointless. I'm still guessing the add everyone and outright somebody when they sign Park.
  7. Short answer is that it is too early to worry about this. They won't make anything official until after Nov. 20th (when they have to submit the 40-roster and protect guys from the rule 5 draft). They probably have most of the framework all set, and possibly a verbal agreement, but the actual announcement won't be until right before Thanksgiving.
  8. If the Twins sign another Korean player this year, I would rather they sign Seung-hwan Oh. They need a bullpen guy like that more than they need a corner outfielder. Details on Oh: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/seung-hwan-oh-free-agent.html Son is a better on-base guy than Park, but comes with much less power. I'd pass on Son.
  9. How about Wieters also accepting his qualifying offer! Two players in the same year!?!?!
  10. It's on MLB trade rumors as well. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/yankees-acquire-aaron-hicks-from-twins-for-john-ryan-murphy.html
  11. Great article. I have heard some people make this comparison on the radio, which has always seemed silly to me. TR even said something like "this is just like Nishioka" in a press-conference, but I'm pretty sure he was only saying that in reference to negotiating a contract and timelines. Also, slight nit to pick: Rob Refsnyder was born in South Korea, yes... but he was adopted when he was 5-months old and lived in California after that. I'm not sure he's worth mentioning as a comparison. And, I know Hyun-Jin Ryu is a pitcher, but he also played in the KBO and has been able transfer his skills to the MLB. Just a thought.
  12. Slow down there, Turbo. Free agency began 3 days ago (in full) and trades like this usually don't happen until, at least, the winter meetings. That's not for another month. There is plenty of time to make a trade or four. The GM meetings are going on right now. TR could very well be working out a trade at this very moment. I personally don't think that he will until they sign Park, but he could be laying the groundwork right now.
  13. I'm aware that Park wouldn't be eligible for the rule V draft. I was talking about a situation where Park takes a spot on the 40-man roster, leaving another rule V eligible prospect exposed in the draft. I guess I didn't realize that a team has to file the 40-man that early. Either way, I don't believe that the Twins will come to a deal before Nov 20th. So, it's kind of a moot point.
  14. I don't know if they can actually wait that long. They have 30 days to sign him to a contract. The rule V draft is 31 days away... I guess they could technically reach a verbal agreement and not have an official signing until after the draft, but I'm not sure. There might be another trade in the mix before the rule V draft which may mean they have fewer prospects to protect, or more open spots on the 40-man roster.
  15. I don't know. Look at that video of the 4 HRs. His bat flips weren't too egregious there.
  16. I'd have to say that the biggest surprise of the 2015 season for me was that the Twins stayed in contention for a playoff spot until pretty much the end of the year and finishing 2nd in the division. I thought that they would be an improved team, but I didn't believe that they would improve by that much. It was a very positive surprise. I would say that my biggest surprise of 2016 will be that the Twins get into the playoffs, but I'm not going to do that. I think they have enough talent and momentum that it wouldn't surprise me at all. In fact, I almost expect it. The biggest surprise of 2016 will come from the ROY voting when it is revealed that there is a tie for 1st place between Byron Buxton and Jose Berrios!
  17. Well, I'd rather see Sano get some reps in the outfield during winter ball than in spring training. I don't see this as a big deal at the moment. He'll either prove that he's not an outfielder, or prove that he could play a decent enough right field for a few games in the first half of a season before they trade Plouffe.
  18. The KBO doesn't use the same system as the NPB. It basically has the old NBP system, which does not have the $20M cap on bids.
  19. Korean and Japanese players are exempt from this. They have their own agreement with the MLB that basically only allows players to sign with teams from their own country. I read somewhere that a player in the NPB (Japan) must play for 9 seasons before becoming a free agent. The posting system lets the player get to the MLB before free agency. I'm pretty sure the idea is to keep the best talent in the league for a few years to keep the leagues viable. As far as Park goes, I'm on the fence. Kang seemed to be a good pickup for the Pirates, which shows that some players can make the jump over to the MLB. I don't think Park will come close to 50 HR in a season, but if all it cost was something similar to Kang ($5M posting fee and $11M over 4 years), I'd take a flier on him. If he hits .270 with 20HR, the contract would be considered a good value.
  20. That was a nice looking HR. I thought the announcer was mistaken at first when he listed the score though. A three-run homer to bring the Aces within twelve. Ouch. Good hit though.
  21. Because he's a fan favorite. And that way everyone can vent about how TR is always trying to get the old group back together! I don't understand the idea. I love Cuddy. I hope the Mets come back this year and he ends up with a WS ring. I do not want him back on the Twins. That shipped sailed a long time ago. My prediction is that we start the season with Rosario/Hicks/Arcia or FA for an outfield, with Buxton and Kepler in AAA gettiong every day at bats. Buxton probably shows back up in the big leagues by May or June. That FA will be someone not very noteworthy that most will complain about, but plays ok and is traded or outrighted once Buxton is up. That probably means rolling with 5 OF to start the year, as they'll also have a prototypical 4th OF that can play all 3 positions/pinch run. I could be way off base, but we'll see.
  22. Park also wouldn't cost the Twins a draft pick as well. I don't know that Park will be that expensive though. The posting fee for Kang was $5M. I wouldn't expect it to take more than that for a posting fee as Kang played a more premium position. The Chris Davis idea isn't ideal to me. Sure, he would look good in the lineup for a while, but he's going to command a long contract that might not look so good later on, not to mention loss of the 1st round draft pick, as Davis will surely get a QO.
  23. pfft... More like 2:08. Thanks for finding that though. That is a fun HR to watch.
  24. I can see the case for either team winning this one. So, complete shot in the dark... Mets in 6.
  25. Congrats to Torii on a great career. I have many wonderful memories of him playing with the Twins. I'm sure that he'll go down in Twins history being considered a great player who played the game the right way and was a positive influence on all those around him. Thanks for the memories, Torii. Good luck in retirement.
