  1. So Nolasco is the lesser pitcher.....ok? That has absolutely nothing to do with any of the conversation about resigning Hector. I don't see Santiago as an above average major league pitcher so yes, mediocre would be the correct label.
  2. Thats cute. So throwing at somebody and starting a fight only draws a fine, but shoving a player gets you a game. Hmmmm... I didn't realize Roger Goodell was commissioner of MLB too....
  3. A young pitcher struggling absolutely is, but there were 3 of them. A pitcher missing some time certainly is as well, but a potential starter tearing their UCL in ST isn't something most teams plan for. Maybe I'm more down on Santiago than most, but I didn't see him as a massive upgrade over a guy like John Niese, who you could sign to a MiLB deal. The staff was going to be a disaster with Santiago or with low cost signings. At least if they had pitchers on MiLB contracts or even a low cost MLB contract the Twins might make a move when necessary. This is the same team that locked in Hughes coming off major surgery and two uninspiring ST starts. I had 0 confidence they would move on from Santiago if/when the time came. The loyalty this organization shows to subpar veteran play knows no depths. I think I stand on pretty firm ground there. What you call honest some might say is stubbornness, but I'll gladly accept the respect.
  4. I'm not saying anybody is pumping him up to be anything that he isn't. The OP was "BTW, where are those that thought Santiago should have been non-tendered?" They had three pitchers, Mejia, May, and Berrios, that I preferred over Santiago, but as soon as they tendered him that contract he was guaranteed a rotation spot. To me that was disappointing. He was coming off a poor season for the Twins, and they had just made that wonky trade to get out from under a year of paying for a mediocre veteran starter. The market wasn't great so I was totally fine with the Twins signing a couple guys to minor league deals as the plan B, and trying to find bullpen help. I was in favor of the younger pitchers getting the first shot to start the year. If I had any faith in this organization to cut bait with veteran players before their performance became laughable maybe I would've been more in favor, but I was worried about those three all getting a legitimate chance to start and signing Santiago only heightened that fear. Obviously after May went down with the UCL tear and Santiago started this season hot the move looks better, but I think it absolutely is a defensible position to not initially like the Santiago signing.
  5. Call me bullish but I'm a believer that as the sample size continues to grow we'll see a reduction in "random error," (Idk if its actually fair to call it that) and the gap between ERA and FIP will shrink. Last season with the Twins was the closest those two came to matching. I don't think it was some crazy hot take to favor Mejia or Berrios to start the season over a guy who appeared to be pitching as predicted. Who knows, maybe he is just that magic dude who can continue to survive giving up home runs and by sneaking out of situations with runners on base. If not, hopefully it lasts until the end of July...
  6. I think it has elements of both intent and accident. I don't think he was purposely hunting for Pedroia's bum knee, but Machado certainly went in hard in an effort to break up the double play. He brought his leg up to make sure he went over the bag in an effort to get into Pedroia. In essence he knew he wasn't beating the ball to 2B so he went in trying to blow the play up. MLB has started to scale back the leeway baserunners have in doing that but those plays are still going to happen. That said, I don't believe for one second that Machado was only trying to protect himself with the slide. This is all pure speculation though, and a good example of why I can't stand the notion of judging intent. Also, I couldn't agree more, if you're throwing at somebody's head feel free to gtfo.
  7. You mean that same guy whose ERA didn't reflect how he outperformed average to below average peripheral stats all those years? Earn a spot? Please, show me where Santiago earned a spot in the with the Twins. If "earning," a spot was a criteria for this year's staff nobody beside Santana would have been back... I said I didn't like the move during the offseason because there were a handful of younger players I would have rather seen have the first shot at the rotation. You knew he was locking a rotation spot up for better or worse when he signed and we've watched how patient (content perhaps?) this organization is with mediocre vets. Yes he has been good for 3 games, and yes, the calendar still says April...
  8. Is it possible to inflict a snake bite on yourself?
  9. After last season I think mediocre is being generous... No he wouldn't be that 7-8th guy which was exactly the point. Yeah they get chances, but it is always after a veteran has burned out after an excessively long stint. It would be nice at this point if watching middling veterans play was plan B.
  10. Agreed the rotation is a joke. I'm fine with having depth, I just wanted the mediocre veterans to provide that role when/if the younger pitchers were injured/ineffective. We knew Santiago wasn't going to fill that role. So far it has looked good but like you said it isn't even May yet.
  11. Berrios, Duffey, Mejia, and May are young arms. They can't back up an entire rotation. I wanted to see those guys get that first shot rather than Santiago. That wasn't going to happen given the ways the Twins have operated. I think its easy to look at his 3 game start and May's season ending UCL tear now and say "yep definitely the right call," but before that Santiago was another mediocre at best veteran who was coming off a terrible season. You know he was locking down a rotation spot and we've seen how reluctant the Twins can be to move on veteran mediocrity.
  12. Well this is starting to spiral quickly...
  13. I mean apart from Santana the entire rotation was a question mark. I had no faith in Hughes and I had moved past Gibson a while back. Idk if any team can survive having to back up starters 2-5. This season wasn't going to be enjoyable in terms of starting pitching. The way I viewed it was if I'm going to watch starting pitching struggle I would rather it be young guys with upside. But, so far so good from Santiago, hopefully it continues until he can be moved.
  14. Meh, I kind of viewed him as a reinvent the veteran signing and I was/am worried that the numbers are finally catching up to him. Trigger Warning: I wasn't a huge fan of giving up Meyer but it bought the team flexibility last offseason. By signing Santiago and then paying out part of Nolasco's contract, the Twins essentially swapped starting pitchers and sold Meyer for 500K. That pisses me off. Maybe he was the best starter available but I was also fine with passing on him and buying legitimate relief help. Santana and Gibson were absolute locks. You knew they were going to give Hughes every opportunity to prove he couldn't start. So they had May, Mejia, Berrios, Duffey, and a signed starter competing for a 4th and 5th spot. I wanted May and Berrios. In hindsight yeah, having Santiago after May tears his UCL looks like good insurance but at the time I wasn't nuts about the idea of spending the "trade savings," on a guy coming off a terrible year who was certain to take the spot of a younger pitcher.
  15. If its only for that stretch I'll disagree with bringing him up but I can stomach it. Chargois and Melotakis are better pitchers. I can understand the "ease them along," approach but if their service clock is going to start this year (Chargois's already has) I would much rather see them filling in. This team should be past the point of using dive bin stop gaps. The last sentence is a legitimate concern.
  16. They could bring up Berrios and stay with a 5 man rotation so we don't have to watch Gibson and Hughes each have two chances to burn down the bullpen. Chargois? Hell even Melotakis. Bring up Palka so they have a 4th OFer. Idc pick any of the those options. Boshers place on the 40 man is questionable at best after his ST and start to the season. Now we're watching him pitch for the Twins...
  17. Still here. You remember how he pitched last season right? We've seen threads about the Twins making the playoffs and how impressive Molitor is too. I doubt those opinions are quite as strong as they were after the 5-1 start. He has started 3 games... Enjoy the hot streak but you might want to wait a little while before putting people on blast. Its still April..
  18. Agreed. I also think having a guy like Haley who must stay on the 25 man only exacerbates the issue of finding pitchers with that potential. I believe that is a big part of the gripe.
  19. Idk about you but I'm ready to grab my pitchfork if one of Vargas/Park and Berrios aren't up at the end of the month.
  20. Going with 4 man rotation for next week so Vargas and Chargois come up immediately is the plan for now?
  21. So are Hughes and Gibson "on alert," now? Welcome back Jose, hopefully they let you stay this time. Mejia definitely made his case for being the first pitcher dropped but if this isn't the first quick hook on a list of them then there is a problem.
  22. You've seen their bench right?
  23. Haha gotcha. Yeah that seems a lot less extreme. I would happy with either Park or Vargas but if Molitor can find the ABs for a three man 1B/DH group I can't say I'm totally opposed to the experiment. The catch with the whole proposal is you're going to have a hard time selling me Grossman as the 4th OFer. I still have nightmares about that epic boot in LF late last season.
  24. If the Twins had a solid 25 man and guys who had come up through the system that they wanted to protect on the 40 man then that would totally make sense, but that isn't the case. They have guys on both rosters that are beyond expendable. The RP should be fine, they have plenty of those guys. The SP situation is what it is. Apart from Berrios right now they have NOBODY they can bring up. I guess stretch Duffey out if 2 go down? Adding Park doesn't affect either of those situations. They're carrying Santana, Adrianza, and Vielma. Santana can't do anything well; Adrianza and Vielma can pick up the ball but neither can hit it. All three are behind the backup utility IFer Escobar. They can afford to expose one of that trio to waivers. Park has a position, and he could easily be the weak part of a 1B platoon. I would rather they carry two 1B/DH guys with bats and 2 UT IFers who can't hit as opposed to 3 UT IFers who can't hit. Unless they plan to add some OFer we don't know about to the 40 man I'm going to favor the former scenario. Hell, I'm not advocating for adding Park "willy-nilly." What I said was that his position off the 40 man shouldn't decide whether he or Vargas comes up. If they like Vargas better than fine, it doesn't bother me I just want to get a bat on the bench. However, if they're only bringing up Vargas due to his status on the 40 man and because they refuse to part with guys like Adrianza, Santana, Boshers, ect.. then yeah, I have an issue with that.
