  1. "Twins Offense Leaves 21 Runners on Base" ...and 16 of them were Luis Arraez.
  2. Geez Tom, you're right on. That was really fun to watch. When it was a true ball he took, when it was close he fouled, when it was a clear strike he drilled it. That was clinical. Just dialed in.
  3. Arraez belongs. I would like to see him granted some security. It wouldn’t cost much and should be good for both the team and the player. I think that is generally the better way of operating than giving big, risky contracts to other teams’ free agents. When Donaldson’s eyes shouted “popped hammy,” we were all reminded how important Luis Arraez is to this team.
  4. Not all of us were thrilled with the signing at the time. I was immediately disappointed they chose to allocate so much to broken down former star player. Especially one I saw as a hothead. I believe he managed hurt the team (even from the bench) last offseason when he soured the officials against our 9. To me, the playing field looked pretty lopsided from the moment of his "They don't care" rant. I totally agree with you that 2020 and 2021 should be the pay-off years while 2022 and 2023 should be the overpay years. I wish they would have used the resources to keep Rosario and/or Odorizzi instead.
  5. Saw the opening day lineup and my feelings of loss were slightly tempered when I saw Arraez name in LF. Not the name I loved the most, but I do care about Arraez. Couldn't help but wonder how many games it would take for Donaldson to pull up lame and make Arraez shift forward to 3rd so I could resume my pain over losing Rosario in LF. Good 'ol reliable Josh Donaldson kept me in suspense for over 1/2 inning before breaking down. A: I should've felt bad for the guy, but instead, I flashed back to this article and thought how much more I would love the Twins if (entering 2020) they'd just committed to keeping Eddie Rosario rather than acquiring JD. B: I will read everything Renabanena writes and will heartily enjoy it.
  6. This was a really great read. Thanks Seth!
  7. There's no chance Willians is the 26th man. I am confident of this because I enjoy watching him play. This FO has apparently connected sensors to my heart and applied the following if/then logic: if Reed enjoys watching a player succeed, then that player must be voted off the island. The good news in all this is that I just found where I can watch Venezuelan games with players that I care about! I'll be over there while my friends (all you current Twins fans) get amped for a season of J.A. Happ pitching 5 1/3 solid innings/outing, Max Kepler looking to improve on his career .237/.319/.444, Josh Donaldson getting paid to nurse another injury, etc.
  8. Being a "Twins Fan" now means rooting for J.A. Happ to throw 5 1/3 innings of 2 run ball rather than watching the next chapter of my favorite Twins player's career. They again decided not to retain my favorite player and instead, they've spent that money on a solid, reliable and unspectacular starter. The clubhouse will smell a little more like Yankees and I will be rooting for the Cleveland Indians a lot more. This is the same feeling I had in the 2003 offseason when I had to accept being a "Twins Fan" would mean rooting for Kenny Rogers to have a quality start rather than enjoying the rest of my then favorite Twin, David Ortiz's, career. I'm super bummed. I get that it is totally irrational, but I'm a fan, not a member of the Front Office. Go Cleveland!
  9. "If Josh Donaldson goes down, the Twins can plug in one of their best hitters to replace him." This is what I expect to happen. Josh Donaldson is a broken, former star player. He won't play much for the remainder of this garbage contract and Polanco will be the 3rd baseman with Arraez returning to 2nd. Signing Donaldson was bad decision, but they are deep enough to absorb it so long as they don't do something foolish like... "Does this make it more likely that the Twins trade Arráez?"
  10. They sure loved Manny. Red Sox fans celebrate imperfect players. You seem to have them confused with Yankees fans who hate everyone.
  11. Eddie is a star player early in his prime with natural hitting gifts like I've rarely seen in my 3 decades of watching the Twins. He's just developing discipline and has more untapped potential as a hitter than anyone else left on the roster. What's more, he's one of the only players on the roster who is actually fun to watch. Gameplay across all teams keeps getting more and more boring and-like the highlights above remind us- we've been blessed to have an outrageously talented and equally unpredictable athlete playing in left field to wake us up just often enough to make games worth watching.. ...but apparently he's not worth paying 40% of what they'll pay Josh Donaldson to nurse his injuries and sour all the leagues umpiring crews against us. I haven't been this disappointed by a Twins move since the winter of 2002-03. The released my favorite Twin that year too with the same basic logic and I hope this one stings them just as badly. I find my reasons for caring about this team dwindling as we enter next season. Perhaps, next summer I just go fishing without my radio.
  12. This was a really helpful article. I was surprised by the Rosario outright/waiver. I was expecting a nontender, but this helped make sense of what is going on. He’s one one the few players on the team I really care about watching and I’m bummed that they are likely to shed him. The Twins would be a lot less fun for me without his personality. I’m still hoping they re-sign him. I understand the rationale for moving on, but there are enough dry, boring, logical decisions made in real life. I want my sporting interests to have some emotion. Psyched about the Saints news though
  13. I sure do. I think my comment made it pretty clear I have fan prejudice, I have no special insight and I'm not attempting to fairly judge the man. Just saying how my gut feels. We've seen a lot of nasty, extremely-competitive people come through sport and they can go any number of directions. Obviously, kicking dirt on home plate is no great sin. I just get a bad feeling from him so far. His body language while he plays and his quotes give me the feeling I got when I met Chuck Knoblauch as a child. Maybe I'll come to love him, but right now I find him very difficult to root for. Determined? Check Talented? Check Fierce competitor? Check Stubborn? Check Petulant baby with no self-control when he doesn't get his way? ...Prove me wrong , Josh!
  14. I find Donaldson very difficult to root for. His strikes me as the selfish, overly-competitive personality that lead some players to a post-career series of domestic disturbances. I don’t want my daughter to end up with a Josh Donaldson type. Funny thing is, my own reaction sheds light on how much I can spin a moment like that. I think if Astudillo did the same thing, I’d probably laugh along and cheer him for his lovable outrage... because I find him likable and sympathetic. Do I actually know these guys? Heck no. I’m a fraud!
  15. Everyone can see he's got a higher level of production available to him if he can learn to be more selective. He's just learning how to do it. The fact that he's been able to make this much change and produce close to the same in the short-term is a good sign in my opinion. He's set the right goal and he's making a concerted effort at it. If he actually develops a better knack for pitch recognition, he could turn into a monster hitter. Some of the best hitters develop that ability as they mature.
  16. Sure, 25% of the country is on fire, meeting in groups is verboten because #pandemiclife, hurricane season wiped out much of the gulf, racism is still real... ...but if 2020 gives us glorious Yankee failure, it just might be worth it.
  17. Baseball will always be better than not baseball.
  18. My Land, those numbers are serious. Can we sign him to a cloning rights contract? I really like this video format, Tom. Fun watch!
  19. I find it hard to argue with you about May. He is prone to occasionally fall apart and he gets hit HARD when he gets hit. The outs he gets come by strikeout, but opponents are slashing .275/.315/.493 with 2.7 HR/9 against him this year. I like May a lot, but that's not dominance and among this group he isn't standing out the right way. Clippard though? All he does is get outs.
  20. Totally disagree Nick. Eddie is a flawed player, but he is the Twins most talented and gifted hitter not named Cruz. For example, compare his career OPS (.786) with Max Kepler's (.763). Max has done it with a very disciplined approach that seems to maximize his talent while Eddie's does even more damage with unrefined talent. I think he has another level accessible to him that he can reach as a hitter if he keeps trending toward being a more-disciplined hitter. What Eddie lacks as a hitter can come with age, experience, training. Might be time to move on from Max? If Larnach, Rooker or Kiriloff were to put up a batting line a little below Rosario's average tripleslash, they'd likely win ROY. Much more likely, we should hope they will trend toward that level of production by year 3 of their careers. All that said, you'll probably get your way. Somebody has to make way for the wave of upcoming prospects and Kepler's under control 'til 2024. Prepare for an offensive drop off.
  21. I was really pleased to see this write-up. The current FO deserves plenty of credit for developing the talent that they inherited, but after 2 seasons and 3 off-seasons to churn the roster, they enter 2019 with starters at C, 1B, 2B, SS, LF, CF, RF all from the previous regime as well as their top SP +some SP "depth" guys, 3 of their best relievers. TR and Bill Smith guys hit 169 home runs for the Twins last year. They left the cupboards well-stocked on the offensive side. I'm impressed by the current FO's talent development. Waiting for more evidence before I draw any conclusions about their ability to identify and obtain new, unproven talent. In any case. I'm thankful they chose to ride Terry Ryan's horse rather than blow it up and start over.
  22. I was so confused until following the link. I read the ad and then came back. I've now been laughing for quite a long time. Thanks for the link!
  23. Cruz was a fantastic hired gun, but whatever Falvey says, Nelson Cruz will not be remembered first as a Twin. He won't be wearing a Twins uniform in the HOF. I personally got more satisfaction from watching Kepler, Berrios, Garver, Sano, Rosario, Buxton, Duffey etc thrive last year than I did watching Nelson Cruz. I'm an outlier on this issue. I just can't start caring about a free agent signee the same as a I do a guy that I've been dreaming on through the minors. My comments were to acknowledge that I'm totally irrational on this issue and despite my prejudice against free agent signings, even I can't find a reason to complain about the Donaldson signing.
  24. I actively dislike like free agent signings as a fan because it breaks continuity & team identity. It makes me care less about t team when the faces change abruptly. That said, I can't find any way to spin this negatively. The Twins have the funds available. This doesn't impact their ability to retain their rising talent. Josh is a tremendous third baseman. If I'm going to pick nits, I would've rather been heading into year 2 of Eduardo Escobar's current contract than heading into year 1 of Josh Donaldson's new deal. Okay, I'm done with that. This looks like a great signing!
