  1. I’d give up on any sort of regular season and do a playoff. The Yankees and Dodgers get first round byes and every team plays. First and second rounds best of 3 with home field to the higher ranked team. Then best of 5 and the final best of 7. Wouldn’t count as a World Series win. Whether the games are attended is based on the medical advice.
  2. This is a perfect example of analytics just flat out being wrong. .276/32/110 is hardly an off season. If he’d not been injured half the season, he might have been an MVP candidate.
  3. I think our weakest position is catcher. Garver had one great season but seemed to wear down playing half a season. I’m not sure he can reproduce his offensive numbers and he still rates as an average defender at best. Avila can’t hit at all...I mean Drew Butera can’t hit. Avila has a rep as a good defender but his numbers show that sliding in recent years. Astudillo can play everywhere but after a strong start turned into an unproductive hitter and has never been a good defender. The next in line, Telis and Grateral, might get leapt over by Jeffers, who is still working on his defense.
  4. I think the Twins had a good off-season--not great because they didn't get an ace. Adding Donaldson improves the defense and can't hurt the offense. Romo and Clippard will help anchor the BP and take some pressure off Rogers. Letting Perez, Gibson, Cron and Schoop go only made sense. Maeda, Hill and Bailey are an improvement over Perez and Gibson--potentially a big improvement if Hill pitches as well as he has in the past. If Buxton and Sano stay healthy, the Twins can win 100 games again.
  5. I wonder if the Twins starters will get more rest this year. Berrios always seems to tire out by the end of the season. The Twins might give him time off with the depth they currently have (not guaranteed as injuries can always happen) if they get a big lead in the division. The Twins also need to stop letting the Yankees steal signs from them.
  6. I see Maeda as a solid #3 starter. That gives the Twins a #2 (Berrios), a #2-3 (Odorizzi), two #3 (Maeda and Pineda), a #4-5 (Bailey) and Hill who could be anywhere from an INC to maybe a #2. That's a big improvement over last year, even if it lacks a definite #1. I'd rather have Maeda, part of a year of Hill and Bailey than Perez and Gibson. We were lucky to get anything out of Perez and Gibson was his usual frustrating self.
  7. That’s great news! I hope those cheating Red Sox choke on Mookie Betts and David Price!
  8. I like what Falvey and Levine are doing but the core of the Twins team was built by Ryan...Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, Polanco, Garver. I think Ryan deserves some credit.
  9. I’d be very surprised, barring injuries, that Jake Cave isn’t the 25th player on the team. I think a better question is whether the Twins will go with 7 or 8 relief pitchers. I think they will go with 8 early in the season and Astudillo will rake in Rochester. Wade is the first call up if an OF gets injured. Kiriloff comes up later in the year if he performs as expected. Rooker and Raley are also options. I am also in favor of completely giving in to spellcheck and requiring all players to change their names to what spellcheck says so Rocker and Riley it is.
  10. Jeffers is the only player on the list I might quibble about. The order seems way out of whack to me, though. I'd go: 1. Buxton--if this guy ever stays healthy and plays up to his ability, he is a potential MVP and a definite game changer. 2. Sano--prodigious power and the future DH once Cruz retires. 3. Berrios--only pitcher with close to ACE stuff. 4. Cruz--I think his presence and Baldelli's led to the Twins turnaround last year. 5. Kepler--good contract, huge upside, good defense 6. Garver--good upside, made big strides last year defensively, great power 7. Lewis--great potential, future SS 8. Polanco--unlikely to get better, good offensively, bad defense and should be moved to 2B, great contract 9. Rogers--anchors the BP 10. Odorizzi--solid #3 SP 11. Pineda--could be the #2 SP 12. Rosario--would be higher if he used his head more in LF and on the bases 13. Graterol--electric stuff but hasn't translated to success in the MLB yet 14. Kirilloff--looks like a future solid contributor 15. Larnach--great potential. 16. Balazovic--good stuff 17. Arraez--looks like a good hitter but awful defensively and very little power 18. Dhuran--hope his stuff translates to MLB 19. Duffey--solid RP 20. Jeffers--hope he proves out (I'd put Gordon or Raley here)
  11. These rankings are crazy. The players chosen are OK, even easy, but their rankings are all over the place. Cruz is top 5. Ditto Buxton and Sano. Arraez has to prove himself and so does Garver. Berrios, Polanco, Lewis, Kepler and the mystery player that eludes me...it had better not be Graterol!
  12. I think Graterol should be in the rotation, maybe getting stretched out early in the season and going for 6-7 innings later in the season. The Twins have plenty of #5 starters between the roster and Rochester. I was hoping they'd get an innings eater like Keuchel but now I'm hoping for a trade because 39 games without Pineda and Pineda then rounding into shape means half a year of Pineda before he's solid and Smeltzer, Littell, Thorpe and Company are going to get bashed if they go longer than a couple of innings too often and will be scary if they have to fill two full slots in the starting rotation.
  13. I don’t think any of the options make sense. We don’t need to spend crazy money on Donaldson. Bumgarner has had the Twins on his no trade list forever and isn’t coming here. Romo over a full season scares me. A couple of the players listed have signed elsewhere. Hill is coming off surgery and won’t be ready for opening day. I’d sign Keuchel or Roark, move Sano to 1B, put Gonzalez at 3B, move Polanco to 2B and try Adrianza or Gordon at SS. My guess is the ball isn’t going to be so juiced next year and we should be solidifying our D. Avila better play good D because he’s an awful hitter. I liked Castro although I thought his D was overrated. Betances would be great.

  15. Signing Donaldson would eat up half the available FA money and we’d have a poor defensive SS and 2B, a new 1B and 2-3 SP that could split time in Rochester. I’d sign a good defensive catcher, move Sano to 1B, move Polanco to 2B, try Gordon or Adrianza at SS and put Gonzalez at 3B. I’d try for two of Keuchel, Wheeler, Roark and Pineda and let the AAA gang take the #5 starter.
  16. I have more faith in Polanco continuing to hit and be a productive batter than I do Arraez who is a singles hitter. Neither is a good defender. I’d move Polanco to 2B where his awful throwing motion and footwork will be less of an issue and try Gordon or Adriana at SS until Lewis is ready. I’m not sure Gordon will be great defensively but Polanco is bad. Adrianza should improve with regular play. I’d also move Sano to 1B and put Gonzalez at 3B. The IF defense would go from suspect to solid.
  17. No, you did NOT say good-bye to Cruz. Signing Didi would be worth 3 more wins per year for the 3 games a year he personally kills the Twins all by himself.
  18. Polanco's problem at short is his absolute lack of fundamentals, especially throwing the ball. He plays shortstop but throws/flips it likes he's playing 2B. I'd move Polanco to 2B, bring up Gordon to play SS, move Sano to 1B and play Gonzalez at 3B. Arraez will be on the bench (I'm still not convinced he'll hit long term and his defense is pretty bad). The OF should be solid if Kepler stays in RF and Buxton can stay healthy. I think Rosario's fielding problems are related to him trying to make a super human effort on every play and not using his head. I hope Garver keeps improving defensively.
  19. The only reason Arraez would have more power is because has very little right now. He’s a good batter with a good eye. I’d bat him second, put him at 2B and let Schoop move on with much thanks for his help. Polanco is still a defensive liability and still has awful footwork. I think it’s gotten into his head. He catches and throws off balance...no wonder he has such bad fielding streaks. I’d move Sano to 1B and haveGonzalez play 3B mainly. If Castro is resigned, he should be garver’s backup. This team needs 3 decent starters during the off season. I’d like to see Pineda and Odorizzi back with hopefully a better starter on top of that. I think they will have to pick up the option on Perez. I don’t see a starter coming up through the minors for a whil
  20. Rosario Buxton Kepler Gonzalez Sano Polanco Schoop Cron Garver Cruz Adrianza Castro Arraez Pineda Berrios Perez Odorizzi Gibson Rogers Romo Dyson May Littell Duffey Harper. The only tough call is the last relief pitcher. If Buxton is injured, then Cave. Pineda Berrios and Odorizzi start. Gibson gets a start but only at home.
  21. I'd like to suggest a different solution. I think Cron is still recovering from injuries. I think moving Sano to first makes sense in the long run and have Gonzalez cover 3B but what about getting Cruz to play 1B. It's maddening to have him sit out interleague games. I think something the Twins need to work on is defense. The only defender they have that is great is Buxton. Kepler's pretty good in RF but so-so in CF. Polanco has been making too many errors lately. Sano is not a good 3B. Schoop is average. Rosario makes too many ego mistakes. Garver has gotten better as a C but he's in a big slump himself. Getting Buxton back will make this team better defensively. I think next year the lineup is going to be C Garver, 1B Sano, 2B Polanco or Arraez, SS Gordon or Polanco, 3B Gonzalez, LF Rosario, CF Buxton, RF Kepler and DH Cruz with a bench of Adrianza, Astudillo and Cave/AAA OF. Cron and Schoop will move on, although I think they contributed more than expected.
  22. It seems to me that the catalyst for the Twins is Buxton. They were doing well when he played but have started slumping since he started getting injured. He is very productive for his batting average and dynamic defensively. He needs to besatdoneand shown videos of Ken Griffey Jr. and told to not kill himself trying to catch every ball.
  23. I don't see May getting the 5th starter position. Berrios will start the season in AAA but will come up quickly. He should be groomed to be a closer. I think it ironic to call Adrianza a 13th hitter as he's never hit anywhere. I'd keep Santana over Grossman because of his ability to play multiple positions and speed. I think the Cleveland Connection will go with Gimenez over Garver. I'd prefer to have Escobar at SS--at least he's adequate. Polanco is an awful SS and can fill in for Dozier at 2B a few times a month. It's time to put the most competitive team on the field and, for me, that means sitting Mauer. A .270/10/65 guy with average defense has less upside than Park or Vargas, both of whom could hit 30-40 HRs and drive in more runs. I'd go with a lineup of 1. Buxton CF, 2. Escobar SS, 3. Dozier 2B, 4. Sano 3B, 5. Park 1B, 6. Vargas DH, 7. Kepler RF, 8. Castro/Gimenez C and 9. Rosario LF. SP are Santana, Hughes, Santiago and Gibson with Berrios called up early when a 5th starter is needed.
