Seems like his career numbers aren't all that relevant when he's only playing every few games. He played well last year and is continuing to play well. He plays hard, has a good attitude about only playing a few times a week, is a great teammate and is able to hit.

Interesting Twins Stats to Watch
SF Twins Fan replied to Sir_Eugene11's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Definitely team strikeouts. -
Kepler is the prospect I'm most excited to follow this season. He just seems to have the 'it' factor. Seems to have great character, works hard and is determined to make it to the Show. I think the Twins did a great job bringing him up in September last year to get him a taste of the MLB. It will be interesting to see how playing time shakes out as the season goes on. There doesn't seem to be room for him currently on the Twins roster, which isn't a bad thing. Twins finally have competition!!!!!! If Kepler builds off of last season the Twins will be forced to do something unless there are injuries (which I don't hope there are).

Ten To Extend: A Five-Part Series (Part 1)
SF Twins Fan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No way on Suzuki. Dozier's situation is interesting. Should the Twins trade him and see if Polanco can take over at second base or keep him and move Polanco? It doesn't sound like Polanco is going to be able to play SS at the MLB level. -
I don't see how this is even news worthy. I could care less where Sano plays in the field as long as he doesn't completely suck and as long as hit bat is still in the lineup. I mean Arcia and the Hammer have both played in the outfield recently and by all accounts Sano blows both of them out of the water in terms of athletic ability. I'm not saying he's going to be a gold glove winner but as long as he doesn't royally mess up it doesn't matter. There is no way the Twins are going to sign Plouffe to an extension (Well almost no way), so right now Plouffe is the best option at 3B. If he gets injured or is traded I'm assuming they would move Sano to 3B especially if it's a long term injury.

Is The Twins System Broken?
SF Twins Fan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This article seems to come out at a strange time in my opinion. The Twins were always in the running from 2001 to 2010 to make the playoffs. 2011 they came back with basically the same team as 2010, however the entire team was decimated by injuries. From 2012 to 2014 they were really, really bad - that also allowed them to draft Buxton, Gordon, Berrios, ect, ect. 2015 they took a step forward and many prospects are close to making it to the majors. No one knows how those prospects are going to turn out. Will they all become great - probably not. Will they all fail - probably not. Hopefully the front office hit on enough of the prospects to make these last 4 years worth it. This article would make more sense in 3 to 5 years if the Twins don't make consistent runs are the World Series and the majority of these prospects fail. To write this article right at the beginning of potential significant improvements seems strange.- 119 replies

What's Next For Alex Meyer?
SF Twins Fan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally I'm not too concerned about him starting the year off in the bullpen, because you never know what is going to happen. He could always start the year in the bullpen and make the jump to the Show and once he is more comfortable move into a long relief or spot start role. I'd say get him up to the MLB anyway possible where he will succeed and gain confidence and then go from there.- 34 replies

Man this is dramatic... If he's the top 2 or 3 pitchers at the start of the season then yes the Twins should start him in the Show. If not, the way the schedule is set up with multiple off days to start the season they might as well start him in AAA and manage his innings for the first month, wait for an injury or poor performance. The other benefit would be gaining an extra year of control. It's not like the Twins are running a terrible starting rotation out there like they did from 2011 to 2014. It's not the best in the MLB but I'd say it's better than average.

5 Reasons To Be Excited About 2016
SF Twins Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Honestly, I think if Nolasco shows he can pitch at all in spring training he'll be traded. The Twins won't get much other than out from under some of his contract, but that is good enough. The rotation will probably be: Santana, Gibson, Hughes, Duffey and Milone - with Berrios being the first called up. Rotations never make it through an entire year healthy, so all it will take is one player missing a start and Berrios will get his opportunity. Besides you never know what you're going to get from Hughes or Duffey. Will Hughes be the guy from 2014 or 2015 - hopefully 2014. Duffey showed a lot of promise in the 10 starts he made last year, but that doesn't mean he's going to have the same success in 2016. Berrios will get his chance this season and if he takes that opportunity and runs with it I don't believe the Twins would send him back down. He threw 166 innings last season between AA and AAA, so he should be able to make it through the entire MLB season.- 32 replies

Berardino: Vargas Drawing Interest In Asia
SF Twins Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Is he out of options with the Twins? If he isn't out of options I think it would be best to keep him, because you never know what you're going to get from Park. If he's out of options though I'd at least like to see if he could be included in a deal that would bring some prospects in return. Obviously it's not my money, but to me sending him there just to save some money seems cheap on the Pohlads. -
The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
SF Twins Fan replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
First off the aggressive baserunning and hitting was only a part of what I said the Royals did well to win the World Series. If you're going to argue that point then at least include everything, don't cherry pick a few things to try and help make your point. Second off, and this I have no idea and I'm not going to do the research because I have better things to do, but how much of that was because they of the starting staff and how much of that was because of the bullpen???? You give absolutely no stats on how how the starting pitching did during that time. An overall ER doesn't mean they had good starts. The Royals starters only had to pitch into the 6th inning to give them a chance to win the game, which is why I said they had a lights out bullpen. They have a shut down 7th, 8th and closer. So, again I'm not sure what your point is. You didn't give any stats on how the starters specifically and you choose only 2 of the 4 reasons I said as to why to Royals did so well this season. Well the Cardinals and Giants from what I can remember have had some pretty dominate pitching. Wainwright and someone else I'm blanking on from Cards and Timmy to Mad Bum (who pitched in 3 games last year in the WS and was lights out) from the Giants. Those two teams are constructed complete different than Royals. -
The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
SF Twins Fan replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
He's an "ace" in the NL not the AL. They're completely different. He pitched terribly once he wasn't able to pitch to a pitcher 2 or 3 times a game. -
The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
SF Twins Fan replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Yea and two of his other three starts in the playoffs he pitched 6 innings with 4 earned runs and 2 innings with 8 earned runs. Not exactly front line material... -
The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
SF Twins Fan replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Also, did KC win the world series this season with a front of the line starter??? The answer to that is NO absolutely not. Cueto pitched terrible once he was traded to KC. KC won with middle of the line pitching, great defense, being aggressive hitting and base running, and a lights out bullpen. -
The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
SF Twins Fan replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
HAHAHA. All I can do is laugh at this post. Hicks only had one, ONE, good month this past season and that means he's turned a corner??? That's laughable. Suzuki is below average defensively, throwing out base stealers and at hitting. He's good at calling a game and that's it. Murphy is average at defense, throwing out base stealers and better than average (for a catcher) at hitting. Seems to be a pretty good improvement to me. He's also only 24 and barely been given a chance to catch since the Yankees signed Mccann to a large contract. Twins fans have been spoiled into thinking Mauer, when catching, was what you should expect from a catcher. There aren't many out there like him when he was in his prime. Salvador Perez and Buster Posey are the only two I can think of who can hit for average, field and throw out base runners. If Murphy can give the Twins average fielding, throwing and a little above average hitting then they "win" this trade. So how is Hicks a gold glove OF and who can hit for 20+ homeruns and 20+ stolen bases???? Has he done any of these things? He's already 26 years old already...not exactly a prospect anymore. It's time to put up or shut up. If you remove the month of July where he hit .346. He hit .230 the rest of the season.....not exactly lighting it up and I don't think I'd categorize that as "taking the next step" would you??? -
Twins Trade Aaron Hicks To Yankees For Catcher
SF Twins Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think this is a solid trade for the Twins. This hurts to depth of the outfield but hopefully these prospects (Buxton, Rosario and Kepler) turn out to be as good as they project to be. I don't think Hicks was as good as some people think. He basically had 1 great month this past season and then reverted back toward what he had done in the past. John Ryan Murphy could fill a void the Twins desperately need to fill at catcher. He plays average defense, throws out would be base stealers at a league average clip (which is much better than Suzuki) and has a better bat than Suzuki. This trade could mean the Twins will try and sign a FA outfielder and I think that would make sense if they could sign one to a 1 or 2 year deal. D Span wouldn't be a bad option if they could sign him to a 1 year deal. He's good defensively, a good hitter and would be a good leadoff hitter for the Twins. The lineup could look like this to start the season: 1. Span CF 2. Mauer 1B 3. Dozier 2B 4. Sano RF 5. Park DH 6. Plouffe 3B 7. Rosario LF 8. Murphy C 9. Escobar Bench of Suzuki, Santana, Arcia and another utility IF or OF. The Twins would have a backup for everyone and it would give the Twins more options to make trades during the season (Plouffe), which would move Sano to 3B and if Buxton is ready move him to CF, Span to LF and Rosario to RF since he has a stronger arm than Span. -
Sano In The Outfield? Get Ready to Juggle
SF Twins Fan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes but making the wrong choice and trading away the prospect that ends up being a difference maker and keeping the one that turns out to be a 4th outfielder is even worse. If comes down to, do you trust TR to make the right choices and I'm not 100% sold on him.- 23 replies

Sano In The Outfield? Get Ready to Juggle
SF Twins Fan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree good franchises trade players when their values are high, but the Twins don't have that many proven OF's yet. Rosario scares me mainly because of his plate discipline (He has none), Hicks was good for three months after being really bad for 2 plus years, Sano isn't an outfielder, Arcia has no business even having a glove and was awful at the plate this past season. Kepler looks great in every aspect but again hasn't played above AA (His 10 plate appearances with the Twins don't count) and Buxton will and probably should start the season at AAA and be there for a month. When he was up he wasn't really squaring the ball up like everyone would like to see. So in all reality the Twins could have 6 outfields (Not including if they sign Robinson) but they could also have 0 real outfielders. What happens if the Twins trade Rosario this winter and Hicks reverts back to how he played the previous years. Buxton and Kepler are going to start the season at AAA, which they should, and then you're left with Sano and Arcia in the outfield. That is a scary outfield and not a good scary outfield.- 23 replies

Sano In The Outfield? Get Ready to Juggle
SF Twins Fan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think this is the winter to start trading players away. There is no way to know which players are going to become assets. Arica has shown flashes in the past that he can at least hit for power, Hicks looks like he figured things out but half a season of solid play isn't really proof of anything. Rosario is great in the field and has some pop, but you don't know if he is going to figure out the strike zone. Kepler hasn't played above AA. I don't understand why so many people are in a hurry to start trading away the young players before you even know what you have in them. I'd say go into next season with the majority of them and see who has taken the next step. Trade away players who aren't making progress at the trade deadline.- 23 replies

This is such a pointless discussion. Sano has played probably two games at first base in his career. He isn't better than Mauer in the field at first base. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it. Mauer should play the majority of the games at first base next season. Sano should get a handful (probably in the teens) and the rest should go to Plouffe.
-
This trade makes absolutely no sense. Gibson is a pretty good 3 if not a 2 in a rotation. He's still young and under control. He's only been an MLB pitcher for 2 full seasons now I believe. Tex is old and broken down. The Twins aren't a DH away from being a playoff contender. The Twins have outfield questions....Will Rosario regress? Is Hicks for real? Do you start Buxton and Kepler in AAA to get them more seasoning. Is Arcia an outfielder? The Twins also need an answer at catcher. What are Turner and Garver going to give you this season? Do they sign a free agent? Do they make a trade?
-
They have a real SS in Escobar and another one Nick Gordon only a few years away. There is no need to trade these players. Right now the Twins have 3 players (Sano, Plouffe and Mauer) to play at 3B, 1B and DH. Vargas and Arcia should NOT be handed the DH spot for next season as they were both bad this past season. As someone stated earlier Dozier trade value right now is pretty low. He's had back to back great 1st halves and awful 2nd halves. No team is going to give up a great prospect for either player especially a catcher. Also, as someone pointed out earlier Polanco is bad in the field. Not just below average he's actually bad. He'll make some tough plays but then boots the easy ones. Or he'll make a great fielding play then his throw will be off. With the Twins staff not great at striking out people they need good fielders, which both plouffe and dozier are.

Robinson, Thompson, Fryer Outrighted

Forget Torii, let's go after Bautista
SF Twins Fan replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
So you want to put a player with a with a .289 OBP in the 2 hole? I don't understand putting Mauer at the bottom of the lineup...He's the top OBP player on the Twins (not including Sano because he only played half the season). Mauer should be hitting 2nd in every game next season. To START the season the lineup should be: Hicks, Mauer, Dozier, Sano, Davis (If the Twins sign him, if not Plouffe), Rosario, Hunter, Suzuki and Escobar. Hopefully by mid season the lineup would be: Buxton, Mauer, Dozier, Sano, Davis, Rosario, Hicks, Suzuki and Escobar. With Hunter, Arcia, backup catcher not currently on the team and Nunez or Santana as the bench. Kepler will hopefully be the first person called up for any injury. -
The Case For Joe Mauer's Contract
SF Twins Fan replied to Tom Schreier's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are a couple of things that give me hope Mauer can return to a similar hitter he was before his recent concussion. 1) Morneau. - It took him 2 full seasons to really get his grove back and in 2014 he hit .319 and in 2015 he was hitting .310. His OBP was .364 and .363, respectively. Mauer is now 2 full seasons away from his concussion. This offseason he's fully healthy and next year could be very telling how the last 2 seasons will go. 2) Mauer's BABIP in 2015 was .035 lower than his career average. I'm not saying Mauer of old will return, but these 2 items give me hope that he could.
