  1. You could look at it this way, not a bad perspective. On the other hand, you could ask yourself this: If the Twins do make the playoffs this year (or even contend), is it more likely that Tepesch was a factor or Berrios?

Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson must have taken phenomenal care of themselves. I read a book on Ryan's conditioning and it was amazing. I'm hoping that in the near future trainers can come up with programs-strength, conditioning, stretching, dietary-that makes TJ surgery a thing of the past.
  3. Sano is barely scratching the surface of how good he can be. What's most exciting to me is that he is starting to hit the ball to right field on a normal basis. If he continues this and improves his plate discipline a step farther, we could be talking Miggy Cabrera status. Everyone keeps saying that players on losing teams don't win MVPs. The last time I checked, we are 12-11. I don't see any reason we can't having a winning record at the end of this year when it's all said and done, especially with the depth of pitching about to come up.
  4. I'm fairly certain that I have Twins terrettes. I swear at the screen every time a ball is called a strike against us. Why even make this an issue people? Come on.
  5. It sounds like people are talking about different variations of "different strike zones." You are implying the actual definition, while others are simply saying certain players get a couple inches of leeway any direction. On a side note, I just want to say that I still want an umpire behind the plate relaying the calls. And they can be as animated as they want.
  6. I don't understand why you would want balls to be called strikes or strikes to be called balls, especially in a scoring or late-inning opportunity (let alone the playoffs). Don't you want these situations to be fair and to be 100% accurately determined by the players? Steve-you also brought up a point about hitters swinging less. I'm not saying that you're not right, but I see it differently. I think pitchers will start to work different areas of the strike zones (let's say top left/right) that don't get called very often...ultimately leading to hitters acting MORE aggressively.
  7. When this was first brought up, I was against having a computerized strike zone. I was firmly holding onto my traditional baseball beliefs and thought that anything besides having an ump back there would be a bucket of yuck. But the more and more I think about it and watch players complain, I have changed my views. I wouldn't mind having an umpire remain back there, maybe with an earpiece in with someone/something relaying balls and strikes. With pitch counts being so relevant in today's game, wasted pitches can be a big deal. For hitters, the difference between hitting in a 2-1 or 1-2 count is enormous. Pitchers and hitters shouldn't have to adapt to each umpires individual strike zone. I really hope this happens in the next year or two.
  8. Did anyone watch the game last night? Goosebumps when Jones/Hosmer went off? C'mon that was awesome!
  9. I am! I went to Venezuela vs. South Korea when I first moved to CA in 2006 (the first WBC). I had very low expectations for it but wanted to check out Anaheim. The atmosphere was really incredible. Scalped some great tickets for really cheap and harassed Bobby Abreu in right field the entire game. If any of you get an opportunity to go to a game, no matter who it is...go for it! On a side note, I do wish USA was more stacked. I haven't paid attention to the progression of their roster since it started, but maybe more players will give it a go each tournament? Perhaps they could expand the rosters so that pitchers can go 1-2 innings and managers still have a plethora of options.
  10. I saw Wells pitched 2 perfect innings for Australia against Japan and somehow got a blown save out of it? How does that work? I have never seen that guy pitch-he must be a very different prospect. Sorry if this is the wrong thread-just seems like the place to be.
  11. Thank you very little.
  12. Appreciate the feedback from everyone. Valid points all the way around. I just don't have faith in Murphy or Garver (or anyone else in the system right now at the catcher position). We'll see what happens when they get some ABs under their belts. I would only sign him to a one year deal, not two, and as jorgenswest mentioned, he has been a quality hitter over the course of his career. Him being 2 years removed from his injury is what intrigues me-maybe this is the first time he has been heath(ish) in a long time.
  13. Why don't we turn a huge weakness from last year into a strength this year? Signing Wieters after signing Castro might seem like it makes no sense at first, but think about the benefits. Castro and Wieters can split time and stay fresh. Wieters is a switch hitter, so can hit against all lefties. They are both average to plus defenders/pitch framers. They would help out the pitching staff immediately-especially the young guys (not that they need help, right?). The questions are, will he only play for a contender? Will he want a full workload? What will he cost? My guess is he will sign with the Angels, but I don't think he would ignore any offers, especially if it is on a 1 year deal to ease him back to 100% in a platoon-type situation. I'm guessing a 1 year deal would cost 8-10 million. BUT WHY PAY THAT WHEN WE JUST PAID CASTRO (too much?)??? I would easily pay him that much instead of paying a 4th OF or 5th 1B/DH. Would be a weird, unconventional signing, but would be a great signing.
  14. For what it's worth, Dan Straily got traded from the Reds to the Marlins for 3 pretty decent prospects. Straily had been picked up off waivers from the Padres and had a career year-a career that's been up and down. Seems like the marlins gave up a lot for him and are trying to load their team with back of the rotation arms. They are a confusing, unpredictable team.
  15. Working at that facility as an educator would be my dream job. My wife has family in Haiti/The D R and we just got back from a trip-was fantastic. I'm a teacher and ex-ball player so this job would be a blast. Looks like a great place to train and learn for these prospects.
  16. Not even close. Oakland's stadium is the biggest $hit hole I've ever seen in professional sports. Went to one game there and that was enough! The dome had some awesome moments. They need to move to San Jose.
  17. I know it-crazy thought!
  18. What if we didn't know as much about these trade negotiations as we thought? What if it isn't centered around JDL? What if the hang up isn't about a better 2nd or 3rd prospect, but something else... I know this scenario is HIGHLY unlikely, but what if the Twin's position is "we are not willing to trade Dozier right now unless we absolutely get blown away." What if the Twins are trying to figure out what it would take to get Urias? What if we have offered Dozier + Jay + other prospects to make it work? Again, HIGHLY unlikely, but if this were the case, what do you think it would take to get Urias? Here's mine: Dozier, Jay, Stewart and Kepler for Urias and Puig (I need some Friday baseball talk at work)
  19. Buxton CF (If he can have a reasonable OBP and stay healthy, will score 110 runs) Mauer 1B Dozier 2B Sano 3B (needs protection from Bautista) Bautista RF/DH Kepler OF/1B Vargas/Park DH/1B Castro C Polanco SS
  20. I would be shocked if the Dodgers gave up Urias. I wouldn't be shocked if the cards gave up Reyes. They are looking up at the cubs in their own division. They need power. The juice may be worth the squeeze for them.
  21. Dozier has 2 years left on a cheap contract (15 million total). Quintana seems to be the Dozier equivalent of pitchers-as he has 2 years left at around 16 million. The big difference is Quintana has 2 additional option years on the cheap as well. If he didn't have those option years, who would fetch more in a trade? I understand every team has different team needs-I am asking this question in a general sense.
  22. How do you think the Rangers view Gallo? I would like to swing something for Profar and Gallo for Santana/Gibson and a couple of our middle tier prospects. I'd be willing to part ways with our best vet pitchers to get those 2. I imagine they haven't given up hope on him yet, just curious on a Texas native's view. Thanks.
  23. Just for the record, I mentioned a week ago Polanco reminded me of Cano-lite. Dick mentioned the same tonight. Just wanted to say I beat him to it. He's a genius, so I must be really smart.
  24. You wouldn't have to find 9 3inn guys necessarily. Could be 6 or 7 guys who can go 2-4 inn every 3-4 days. The remaining 4 or 5 guys could be your 1-2 inn guys every other day. You'd have to be creative, but I think it would work.
  25. With this strategy, you wouldn't pay big money for top of the line starters. Your heavy pitching investments would be top end relievers and starters who would be more effective throwing harder for 3 inn vs mediocre 6 inn. An added on bonus is if anyone is a bust or gets hurt long term, it would be much easier to cut your losses and move onto the next arm.
