  1. I think it's fine to have Suzuki sacrifice bunt but for most other players on the roster, not so much.
  2. I think it would be better to put Arcia on the major league roster and Buxton in AAA than the other way around.
  3. It's harder to argue with that.
  4. Three rates of change: velocity of the ball, height of the ball, velocity of the player. And if you really want to be accurate you have to consider spin of the ball and air density because they affect the trajectory as well. It's actually quite amazing that an outfielder's brain can assess all that quickly enough to make a play.
  5. I'd hardly call Hunter an inmate.
  6. Putting Buxton in AAA until September also fits with this.
  7. I'm in the camp that says option him to AAA until September. It was obvious he was overmatched or pressing (or both) in the batter's box. He could use some time facing AAA pitching. It's probably going to be close to August before he's ready to start playing again anyway and there's no reason to rush things. Keep in mind he probably wouldn't have been called up in the first place if Hicks hadn't gone on the DL.
  8. Don't forget to mention your 3 months a year of paid vacation...
  9. Minnesotans sometimes get the erroneous impression that our teams and players are ignored on the national scene. Well, I guess that has been true with the Twins for the last 4 years but it's not because the Twins are based in Minnesota. However, in 2015 I think serious baseball media people are well aware of what Dozier has been up to and I'm sure he's a top candidate based on his performance this year to date. Notice I said serious baseball media. I think back to Morneau winning the 2006 AL MVP vote with Derek Jeter finishing second. I'll always remember visiting the web site of The New York Post, that bastion of journalistic integrity. Their big headline was JETER LOSES MVP. And in small print with a small picture was the news that Morneau won the award. It was so laughable that I laughed.
  10. An inning like that is a team effort. While Dozier gets and deserves the biggest share of the glory I think the most important at-bat of the inning was by Aaron Hicks. After being behind 0-2 he worked a walk to load the bases. It looks like almost nothing in the box score but it's a great example of doing what needs to be done and taking what the pitcher gives you.
  11. This further points out the absolutely inexplicable delay in Blyleven being elected to the HOF. At the time of his retirement there were only 3 other retired pitchers above him. And he was third in career strikeouts. Repeating for emphasis: THIRD!!! Strikeouts are the pitching equivalent of home runs. Frank Robinson was third or fourth on the home run list when he retired. Can you imagine him having to wait beyond the first ballot? Blyleven should have been a first ballot inductee and the vote shouldn't have been even close. Shameful!
  12. If I were a pitcher I'd rather have Dozier hit a single to right than hit anything to left. I'd still mix up my pitches but keep everything in the low outside quadrant of the zone. Let him dive at that until he hits it better than the up and in.
  13. I've been meaning to post this little story I thought of when I saw this thread. Ed Lopat managed the KC Athletics in '63 and part of '64, with not-so-great success. One time the PA guy announced a substitution and then, not realizing his mic was still live, said, "That Lopat doesn't know how to manage."
  14. If the Twins continue to insist that Mauer won't go back to catching maybe Arcia can go behind the plate. Seriously, though, I think if (or, more accurately, when) Arcia comes back up it will be Robinson's time to leave. I'm sure the plan was for him to be here for no more than a year all along. I doubt Buxton will be back in the majors before September. He'll need time to get back up to speed after his injury and we all saw that he was a bit overmatched at the plate. Keep in mind it's doubtful that he'd have been called up in the first place if Hicks hadn't gotten injured. Then next spring we can have our four-outfielder squad for the next several years ready to go: Arcia, Buxton, Hicks and Rosario.
  15. You do it without realizing it.
  16. Many people hate bunts but it's better than a K or a DP. (Sorry to talk about the game.)
  17. The first team that I can remember taking the approach of locking players in at a young age was Cleveland in the early '90's. They wound up contending for close to 10 years because they had several good young players emerge at about the same time and they chose the right players to lock in. The Twins could be in a very similar situation in the near future and I'd love it if they'd do the same for prospects who have early success.
  18. I still hope that in a year or two and for many years to come we'll see Buxton batting first, Dozier or Santana 2nd, Sano 3rd, Vargas 4th and Arcia 5th. Or maybe flip Vargas and Arcia. Makes me all giddy.
  19. $4 million for 40 years? Get it done.
  20. Not necessarily. You've probably heard this saying: There are old pilots. And there are bold pilots. But there are no old bold pilots. Bill Smith made some bold trades. And that's why he's no longer in charge.
  21. If you read my post on this topic in the portion of the Hicks thread that got hijacked you'll know what I think.
  22. Back on topic, I'll echo what others have said about Hicks that he reminds me of when Hunter came back to the majors to stay in 2000. He had a certain confidence in his swing that hadn't been there before and I'm hoping that we're seeing the beginning of the same career arc with Hicks.
  23. In years past brain injuries were very poorly documented. It's really only been in the last 10 years or so that these injuries have started to receive more concern and it's way overdue. In spite of this there are still accusations of players being "Nancy boys", or lazy, or faking. Look at Justin Morneau, for example. It took four years after his concussion in 2010 for him to finally be able to produce up to his abilities, and in all likelihood his most recent one has ended his career. In Mauer's case there is a strong correlation to his concussion and a significant dropoff in his production. We (and especially he) can be encouraged by his recent improvement and hope his recovery continues. To place him at higher risk of subsequent concussions, which increase the risk of permanent impairment, would be a very bad decision. Mauer knows it, his doctors know it, the team knows it and most of us here know it. That's why there is a high level of frustration with suggestions that he be moved back to catcher.
