    The list of 5th starter options is not promising. I would move several of them to the bullpen, and that would eliminate the perceived depth. The players I would move to the bullpen are Mejia (he's out of options), De Jong, and Stewart. Slegers is a DFA candidate or AAA filler IMO. The bullpen candidates have a couple of DFA candidates in their own right. I've seen enough of Duffey to be confident he won't put it together. I can go either way with Magill and Curtiss. My priority list: - Trade for an impact SP (Bumgarner, Thor, or anyone else that pops up in rumors over the winter) that way everyone on the list slides down a spot in the rotation. - Sign 2-3 bullpen arms. 2 that can slide into the "fireman" role, and another bounce back bargain deal. - Sign a SS so Polanco can slide over to 2B. - Sign a RH OF to challenge Kepler/Buxton for the starting job.

    Let's start with contending in the AL Central. If Cleveland continues to sell off MLB assets to shave payroll, it may take 85-90 wins to win the division. Even with several key players under performing the Twins won 78 games. With status quo, and Buxton/Sano playing better than last year, they are probably projected to be an 82-85 win team. The hill is not that steep to climb into contention.

    He only works part time so he's watching the Chicago Bears. He starts his job again in spring training.

    If you cringe that means the offer is getting closer to fair value. It's gotta hurt to acquire a player like Thor.

    Pay for power, develop OBP guys. There are internal options with the OB potential. LaMonte Wade has always been a guy to draw walks and limit Ks.

    Come on Tom. Don't make me list out all of the Twins rookies who struggled mightily in their first 5-15 MLB starts over the last 3 years. You know this.

    Because the Twins have had so much success calling up a rookie from AAA and seeing immediate success in recent years.

    I don't know I'm not in the trade negotiation. I said in this thread no one in the Twins' organization is off the table for him IMO. There's probably less backlash trading Syndergaard than trading DeGrom who had a historically good season.

    The argument in this thread isn't signing free agents. It is about making a trade for Syndergaard. Who's projected to make a little less than $6 million this season with 3 years of control. There are folks here who want to wait until the stars align perfectly before thinking about making a trade such as this. I think I can speak for Mike too in the next sentence. Making trades like this, for top end pitchers with multiple years of control, helps immensely to open the window of contention.

    If you believe the core will take a step forward next season then you should want a top of the rotation guy like Thor already in place so he can help the team win more games. And who knows, make the playoffs because of that.

    When you aim low, you remain a mediocre team. It's really as simple as that. What are those bargain bin arms going to do for this team? Help them win 82 games instead of 78?

    They're trying to shed some salary since they're about to acquire Cano and Diaz from Seattle. No one in the Twins' organization is off the table for 3 years of Thor.

    I think whoever invests in Eovaldi long term will get a lemon. He made a heroic effort in the playoffs showing he can start and come out of the bullpen. However, there's no way that kind of usage is sustainable over the course of 162 games. Durability has always been in question with him.

    Did people forget that Rogers was a starter at one point and couldn't separate himself from the crowd of worse starting pitching options than we have today? He tops out at 91-92 in the pen. If he goes back to starting he'll go back to being an 88-90 MPH pitcher to conserve energy. This is a bad idea.

    Sounds like a better Sunday afternoon lineup than we've seen the last 3 years.

    I echo several others in here to keep May in the bullpen. It doesn't seem like the best use of his talent to have him as a primary pitcher. I'm going to cringe every time this opener concept is discussed. I accept that this isn't going away until they give it the ol' college try. Since it's here, use it to get rookie pitchers comfortable in the big leagues. May has been there and done that. He shouldn't need an opener before pitching 4-5 innings.

    Love your post. When it comes to Harper and Machado's contracts, I think they're going to include multiple out-years throughout the duration of the contract. My guess is the first player opt-out is 2-3 years into the contract. Perhaps at the end of the 2021 season when the CBA expires... The second opt-out 5-6 years into the contract. So there's a chance the team signing him now has to pay the final years if they opt out!

    Once upon a time on this very website there were 10+ pages of "wtf!" comments when they left Zach Jones unprotected in the Rule 5 draft. Remember Zach Jones? He was supposed to be good I think.

    Sonny Gray... Meh. MadBum... Hell yes. I am very curious what SF wants for him. Dude is a work horse and a unicorn in today's MLB.
