    As someone who was a hockey goalie and led his high school team in HBP they both hurt if you're hit in the wrong place! Never was concussed playing hockey, and ironically did get concussed colliding with my teammate chasing down a Texas league fly ball. I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to prevent concussions. They just happen on the ice, field, or court.

    Can I comment as a fan... One year deals are lame because it gives me zero incentive to invest in their success. If the player bounces back, do we really think the Twins are going to win the bid again for their rights? Since Falvey and Levine took over there have been way too many players who signed and left the organization. I can't keep up with it anymore.

    My point is it is kind of irrational to worry about making a Hicks-esc trade when the people who made that trade aren't here anymore. If we hold on to that fear we'll never make a trade again because a trade went sideways 3 years ago.

    I completely relate with the frustration. Now is the time to make a risky trade when prices are suppressed and more teams are trying to lose more than win.

    The person that made the Hicks trade isn't here anymore. Don't you think Falvine makes better trades than the past regime so far?

    Teams have different needs. Kepler provides good defensive value and below average offense, who can play CF in a pinch. He's under control for 3 more seasons. He's coming off a career high WAR year, but since he's been a starter, averages 2-3 WAR a season. Overall, a solid player... We're not talking about a player with little value, and teams can use that skillset. When it comes to the Twins, I believe Buxton will be given every opportunity to start and live up to his potential. His value also comes from great defense, and below average offense. IMO Buxton is going to saturate his teammates' defensive value no matter who it is. He covers a ton of grass out there, making the opportunities for Kepler to also generate a bunch of value defensively scarce. I'm not buying in on Kepler matching his 10 DRS or 10.8 UZR with Buxton out there. That's where his value comes from unless he puts it all together at the plate. The Twins are better off finding a corner OF where his value is driven from offensive performance, instead of defense. There are players in FA currently that matched or even beat Kepler's WAR production last season, primarily with the bat.

    It's totally legal in the rule book to sign another OF if Kepler is traded.

    True, but I don't look forward to potential flip candidates... Here's to hoping he has a 2016 Dozier-esc season and help the Twins make the playoffs.

    It very well could be the case he only wants 1 year to bounce back and cash in on the lost earnings. In an ideal world I would have liked to find a way to sign him from his age 27-29 seasons. But I realize I'm not in the negotiations.

    Agreed. Though if that player shows up in Minnesota it would have been nice to have the option year on him. Otherwise we're paying premium prices next year.

    Competition between him and Adrianza for the bench spot I imagine.

    The funny thing is I'm baffled why the over-love for Kepler. People have to dig deep into the analytics to find positive things about his offense. The stats on the back of his baseball card haven't changed in nearly 3 full seasons. I'll take the guy who can find holes and get hits on balls in play instead of Kepler's lazy fly balls.

    Granted I was just a wee lad at the time but I remember people wanting to run Dougie baseball out of town so Morneau can take over full time.

    I'm all for trading Kepler and other prospects for top end pitching. There's plenty of corner OFs available in FA right now that can match or beat Kepler's WAR value.

    I'm with you on Buxton and Kepler. It's put up or shut up time for them. I wish they gave Kirilloff a month in AA last season instead of keeping him for the Fort Myers playoff run. He was absolutely murdering the ball and didn't need additional time down there. If the minors is all about development treat it that way. If Fort Myers fans are upset because their best player isn't around for the playoffs oh well.

    Their fishing technique hasn't been working over the last couple of years... I'd try setting a net with a Manny's Porterhouse and $20 million AAV. Maybe they'll catch a trophy fish instead!

    They won 78 games with Buxton and Sano essentially missing the whole season. Not to mention terrible contributions from Dozier, Morrison, etc. You're really underestimating how bad Kansas City, and Detroit are going to be. Possibly Chicago too.

    So they're continuing to explore the 1 year contract path. Even when Falvey and Levine admitted that signing players on 1 year deals hurt the team last year. Wow.

    The list of 5th starter options is not promising. I would move several of them to the bullpen, and that would eliminate the perceived depth. The players I would move to the bullpen are Mejia (he's out of options), De Jong, and Stewart. Slegers is a DFA candidate or AAA filler IMO. The bullpen candidates have a couple of DFA candidates in their own right. I've seen enough of Duffey to be confident he won't put it together. I can go either way with Magill and Curtiss. My priority list: - Trade for an impact SP (Bumgarner, Thor, or anyone else that pops up in rumors over the winter) that way everyone on the list slides down a spot in the rotation. - Sign 2-3 bullpen arms. 2 that can slide into the "fireman" role, and another bounce back bargain deal. - Sign a SS so Polanco can slide over to 2B. - Sign a RH OF to challenge Kepler/Buxton for the starting job.

    Let's start with contending in the AL Central. If Cleveland continues to sell off MLB assets to shave payroll, it may take 85-90 wins to win the division. Even with several key players under performing the Twins won 78 games. With status quo, and Buxton/Sano playing better than last year, they are probably projected to be an 82-85 win team. The hill is not that steep to climb into contention.
