  1. Actually Cuddyer was up and down in 2002 and 2003 so pretty good comparison. If Hicks gets a shot this year and does well. and he is regular in corner OF next year that would be good. I think it is possible.
  2. I am not a doctor. I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn last night. (I am a CPA). Anyway, hopefully this is not too bad and Terry Ryan can be back opening day. Our prayers are with him. And yes, as somebody said, family and health come first, the Twins and baseball come second.
  3. I got it Thursday or Friday (cant remember which) I think on one of the top 10 prospect articles. I also had to end task and shut down computer to get out of it. I ran virus scan (McAfee) immediately and found no viruses (viri??). Came back an hour later and no problem. No problems today (Saturday) so far.
  4. Good line. There is a reason the Braves gave him away for very little. Maybe 2013 was just pitching thru injury, maybe not. We will see. Yes, let him get lots of innings at Rochester (or New Britain). Maybe Twins get lucky. Maybe not. IMHO he looks to be a better long range prospect than Trevor May at this point.
  5. I still think Gibson will follow the path of the previous Kyle (Lohse). We will never know which one will show up. What we saw last year in his stint here, or a pretty good prospect some project him to be. He does need to start at Rochester this year and work his way back. If Hughes, Nolasco, etc pitch well, then Gibson becomes excess. I do think between injuries and lack of effectiveness from one of the projected starters, Gibson will get a shot. IMHO he wont show much.
  6. Great article as usual Seth. I am one of those who was glad Pelfrey reupped. Usually the second year after Tommy John is the best--and that is the 2014 season. I am hoping for big things from him including the 200IP. Also good that he mentors Meyer and Gibson.
  7. Per Twinsbaseball.com that is exactly the case--he had never had an off-season and wanted one. I think it was the right move for him. Barring injuries, start him in Rochester and bring him up during the summer (after trading Willingham??).
  8. Yes Sharapova has impeccable form (along with her quirky walk) but she screams so DAM loud...
  9. Again--great article Seth. Looking forward to more of these. I didn't realize Gilbert was a Jersey boy (as I was back in the day). Will definitely keep an eye on him in 2014.
  10. I would go with Hicks. I think with the lower expectations and pressure, he will start out doing well at Rochester and have a great second half.
  11. Great interview Seth. Looking forward to more in the future. Good that he has high goals including making the AS team.
  12. I agree with most things that have been said. One point hasn't. Depth. Twins have 8 starters. In no particular order--Hughes, Nolasco, Pelfrey, Correia, Deduno (if healthy), Diamond, Duensing, and Swarzek. Having all 8 prepared to start means that from May to August you have depth to cover the inevitable injuries and doubleheaders without dipping into the minors (unless Meyer is ready--and that is doubtful because he lost too much time in 2013). To me this is telling Albers and Gibson to pick it up or your chances to be in the show are over.
  13. I cant believe how often this off season I am agreeing with Thrylos...but he is right. Jack Morris is borderline HOF. Jim Kaat belongs there. Kaat has the most wins of any pitcher not in the HOF. IMHO he was the best fielding pitcher of my lifetime. I am not a big believer in WAR so I cant tell you how he stands there. Morris is among a group of pitchers who are borderline including Mussina, Schilling, etc. Now I will be more upset if those two get in than I am now. I would have voted for Morris but his omission is not a big deal.
  14. Actually to me Jim Kaat is that guy not Morris. Kaat who was arguably the greatest fielding pitching of my lifetime has more wins than Morris or even Bert. He is the guy with the most wins not in the HOF. But I agree with you--somebody has to be that guy. I am OK with Morris missing--to me he was borderline. But that means that Schilling and Mussina don't get in either--which look possible.
  15. Good article Seth. I am more optimistic than you on Pinto. I feel he will hit enough to keep the number 1 spot with Suzuki catching 2-3 games a week. Mauer and Suzuki and Steinbech will work with him on developing his defense and catching game. Probably Hermann will be the 3rd catcher and backup OF.
  16. Pass on Nyjer. Period. I remember his days here in DC with the Nats...not good. Not an improvement over Pressley or Mastro. If signed to MiLB contract could block Hicks and Buxton.
  17. Good article Thrylos...I also like Pelfrey (especially on a reasonable contract). Next year is the second back from Tommy John--so we should see Pelfrey at his best like last July. Unfortunately, he is a fly ball pitcher and still dealing with Arcia, Parmalee, Willingham, etc. in the corner OF spots. That will mean a higher BABIP. The hope for Pelfrey is the maturity of Hicks and Buxton enabling the Twins to finally get to a decent OF defense.
  18. Great article--like the category specification--that makes the pitching roster look reasonable. If you assume that Deduno is on DL in April, then ST is a fight for 5th starter between Diamond and Worley. Loser fights with Duensing and Swarzek for 2 long spots in pen and that loser is gone. So that's 9 spots. Group D battles to fill out pen and Gibson goes to Rochester.
  19. Great article Seth. Yes, good that these guys got to live out their dreams. I agree with Thrylos that on a contending team, it is likely that only one (or none) would have made it. However, these guys do add something good to a very forgettable season. I hope all these guys go to spring training (whether DFAd or not) and give it their best shot.
  20. Given the number of free agents signed--Gibson who in all honesty showed little last year will start at Rochester. As will guys not on 40 man roster (Meyer, Gilmartin, etc.) Assume Deduno starts on the DL. That leaves Swarzek, Worley, Diamond, Duensing and maybe Albers to fight for 5th and 6th spots. Given April weather--5th and 6th spots will be in bullpen. The winner will be decided in ST. None of us can know who will be sharp then (or for that matter in May after spending April in the pen). My guess Worley--but as Thrylos points out none of these guys have stellar career numbers. My hope is that by June Meyer and Gibson will be ready and we can dump most of these guys. The Braves had little faith in Gilmartin--till he does something in minors--I also have little faith.
  21. Chris is the odd man out--somebody has to go from 40 man and it is him. He is competing with Parmalee, Kubel, Willingham and Kubel (and Plouffe when Sano comes up) for 2 spots DH and RF/LF (Arcia has one.) Vargas has spot at Rochester. Too many bodies and Chris is 30 years old. Go to asia and take the money and run.
  22. I am wary of assuming this guy will give us much in 2015--as Seth says--threw about 87MPH last year--looks like another Duensing/Diamond type (back of rotation lefty starter or lefty reliever)--even if recovers from injury issues (doubt he can consistently get over 90MPH. On the other hand we gave up nothing in Doumit--a mediocre lefty bench back and opened up a roster spot for Pelfrey--so a good trade but doesn't mean much in the long run.
  23. Great move--basically a salary dump. Also opens up a spot on the 40 man for Pelfrey. We get another lefty to compete with the guy we got for Morneau for a spot on the 40 man. Also opens up the LH bench spot for Kubel who at least can play a little OF defense.
  24. I agree with you this is how it will work out. I would rather see Kris Johnson go--but I don't think the Twins will let go of a lefty pitcher--no matter how limited his prospect for success.
  25. I think Detroit has gotten stronger this off-season. I love the Prince/Kinsler trade and moving Miggy back to first. Realistically, with a below average defense (arguably worst defense in AL) and counting on Pinto, Sano (half year) and (maybe) Hicks--81 wins would be a marvelous year next year.
