  1. Amen!!!! None of this makes any sense. Who plays CF if Hicks gets hurt?? To me it looks like Bartlett and Kubel have a month or so and then Mastro comes back...but his only improvement is defense. I have been down on this season every since Sano had his TJ surgery...now I am wondering if Twins will lose 100 games...I did get tickets for Twins visit to Os are Camden Yards at end of summer with one (and only one) hope--seeing Buxton in CF.
  2. Great article Seth. To be honest, I cant remember why I got interested in baseball. It was so long ago (60 years). I remember listening to games as a kid on a transistor radio in bed. I was a Mets fan in the 1960s--so what the Twins are going thru now is nothing!!! 1969 shows that the impossible can happen. Maybe it will happen for the Twins. To me the best thing about the game (outside of the fact that it is played in the summer--so opening day means snow is (usually) done) is the way you pass it down generations. In the 1980s I taught the game to my son and took him to minor league games and Old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. This summer my son and I are planning to start the grandson (who will turn 1) by taking him to Bethesda Big Train games (college wooden bat summer leagues) and as he grows up teaching him the game.
  3. Outstanding article AJ. I enjoy reading you here on Twins Daily. I hope in the near future you will be writing here as a member of the Twins.
  4. Why is Bartlett still here?? Dreadful spring training. Done nothing last two years. This is the year that Twins start building the next division winning roster. Kubel (only slightly better than Bartlett) is not part of that picture. He should have been gone. Parmalee needs to get consistent playing time to see if he is part of that roster. If you keep Kubel over Parmalee you gain nothing. So now we are down to 26 guys--dropping Rohlfing, Bartlett and Kubel. Last cut--let this week's pitchers determine it. I agree with others--why didn't Tonkin (part of the future contender) make team??
  5. I still think long-term Plouffe is the RF (like Cuddyer). When Sano is ready, move Trevor to RF unless Parmalee or somebody else has grabbed it. I would try it a few times this year.
  6. I agree with most posters. Stick a fork in the Vanimal. He is done. Will he pass thru waivers?? Probably not--somebody will give him one last shot. Could he comeback?? Of course. Will he?? Who knows. The Twins still have 3 candidates for starter (Diamond, Gibson, Deduno). They have Meyers in the minors and maybe May. Cut the Vanimal now.
  7. I want to see Hicks in the OF this year to see how he will hit MLB pitching over a season. We know he can cover the ground. If he hits well and Buxton comes up, then move him to a corner OF, let Parmalee, Plouffe, and Rosario battle it out for the other OF spot (figuring Sano at 3B) and give Arcia the DH spot--WHEN Buxton is ready. Until Buxton is ready, keep Hicks in CF.
  8. Good report Thrylos...I agree with you...why are the Jasons (Kubel and Bartlett) still around. Stick a fork in them, they are done.
  9. I agree--why are Twins still carrying Bartlett--stick a fork in him--he is done. I understand that Santana (maybe SS of the future) has defensive problems and needs to play everyday. The key is--Florimon. If he can go opening day (I have my doubts) then OK. If not, then why not play Santana until Florimon is ready.
  10. Great stuff Seth. Looking forward to more reports on the minor leaguers. Interesting that you talked about a trickle down impact as roster cuts are made. So will most of the guys throwing for Cedar Rapids now end up in extended spring (and then ETown)??
  11. I agree. Arcia needs to be in the Twins roster and not sitting. Hicks, Gibson and potentially Meyer could go down and earn their promotion. If we are building towards a contending team in 2015 or 2016, guys need to be getting their feet wet. Guys like Parmalee and Plouffe need to show they are part of that team. Bartlett, Kubel and Willingham are just filler and if they don't show anything in Ft. Myers dump them.
  12. I see a few posters talking up Gibson and trading somebody to make room for him. Not sure that is a good idea. Gibson needs to go to Rochester and earn spot in Target Field first. He is old (27) for a rookie and not an ace. If he is doing well end of May, then bring him up--somebody will have worked himself out of the rotation by then. Meanwhile, a rotation of Hughes, Nolasco, Correia, Pelfrey, and Worley/Diamond/Deduno / looks adequate for now.
  13. Thanks for great article AJ. Good luck in spring training and the 2014 season.
  14. As I said in another thread. Once Sano is here (June??) We have 5 guys for 3 spots (LF, RF,DH)--Arcia, Willingham, Parmalee, Kubel, Plouffe. Hopefully, Parmalee gets a chance to see if that Sept. a couple of years ago was a fluke. Arcia has to play everyday. If we platoon Plouffe and Kubel where does that leave Willingham?? I wonder if Kubel is just insurance against Parmalee or in Rochester until we trade Willingham for what little he is worth.
  15. Great article Seth. I agree, he looks like a good backup catcher and deserves a shot at starting a couple games a week in 2014.
  16. To my way of thinking we have 5 guys for 3 spots (once Sano takes over 3B). Willingham, Plouffe, Parmalee, Arcia and Kubel (assuming he makes team). I agree with Mike--don't play your worst defender in the OF costing you a potential of a couple of runs a game. Keep Willingham as primary DH if he hits like 2012. If he doesn't hit, he gets splinters. Put Arcia in OF daily (except for DH for mental health breaks). Rotate Kubel and Parms in RF (with Plouffe once Sano is here to stay). Eventually (July??) Hicks will be up but if he is--he goes to CF and Presley to the bench.
  17. Seth--you aren't old. I am old. I remember going to games at Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds as a kid. That's old. I did take survey--not sure how much it helps since I live in DC area and don't drink.
  18. I think 5th starter spot is Worley's to lose given his NL record. I also suspect somebody will come up with a sore arm, hammy or shoulder which will give Diamond/Deduno a shot. The Twins should trade somebody when Meyer is ready (or Gibson).
  19. Mastro and Presley are 4th OF at best. However, one will open the season as the starting CF while we wait for Buxton. Put Hicks at Rochester and let him play every day (I would have him play RF cause that's where he will be playing in 2015 in Target Field.) If Hicks is doing well at Rochester around memorial day, bring him up but play him, don't let him get splinters from the pine. If he isn't doing well, give him the year at Rochester.
  20. Great article Seth. I also chuckled when he talked about pitching to contact. Since he was one of my adapt-a-prospects last year, I followed him closely and was very impressed. I don't tweet so I didn't see his tweets but heard about them. He is a wee bit cocky, I wonder what will happen when he runs into his first problem (injury, a series of bad games, a bunch of bad calls from minor league umps). How will he handle it?? I hope he makes Cedar Rapids rotation and does well. A big lefty with powerful stuff...but part of me wonders about him overcoming obstacles. I will be following him again this summer.
  21. Totally agree. Absolutely ZERO reasons to keep Willingham--no matter where he wants to finish his career. By 2015, Sano and Buxton will be up. Hopefully Hicks and Arcia can develop. That means Willingham has no spot. For that matter unless they do something this year--Plouffe (future RF/DH??) and Parmalee will not have spots either. Trade Willingham ASAP for what you can get. Maybe also Plouffe or Parms.
  22. I agree with others--the ceiling for this roster is about 75 wins. I project that Chris Hermann (3rd C, 5th OF) takes one of your OF spots. I hope its Mastro or Pressley because they are basically 4th OF not starting CF. I hope the Twins give Parmalee a real shot this year--playing most games--some at RF some at DH. Play Arcia every day. If that means benching Willingham, so be it. I would also give some time in RF to Plouffe in anticipation of Sano arriving in May. That probably means Kubel doesn't make the team. As to pitching--realizing this is all guesswork at this point--I pick Worley to have a comeback year and take the 5th starter role--with Diamond going to the pen to replace Theilbar.
  23. Seth: Good point on Eades being a high college draftee...still wonder if he starts at Cedar Rapids. Now I understand your thinking on Stewart and Gonsalves (waiting for warm weather--aren't we all). As always, a great article--just nitpicking a bit. (:-)
  24. I agree with others here. Meyers should start at Rochester where he will (presumably) face better hitters than at New Britain. If he is the ace of the future, why not push him. My main comment focuses on the bottom end of the Twins system. Why do you have Eades who didn't have a good 2013 at Fort Myers?? Where the heck is Brett Lee (who arguably was the ace at Cedar Rapids last year)?? Why isn't he at Fr. Myers?? (yes I may be biased cause he was my "adapt a prospect" last year--but given his year--he deserves a promotion. Why do you have Stewart and Gonsalves (both potentially top of the rotation guys) at extended spring training. They should get a shot at Cedar Rapids--will also bring fans to the park. It may be pushing them, but give them a shot--if it doesn't work--send them to E-Town.
  25. I have been watching baseball for almost 50 years. I didn't see Appling, Boudreau or Hans. Given numbers and quotes from his contemporaries--concede Honus Wagner best SS of all time. I definitely feel Ozzie is the best I have ever seen so number 2. The next 5 or so (Appling, Boudreau, Larkin, Cal) hard to rank. All are better than Jeter. Then you get another group--Pee Wee, Rizzuto, Banks (would be higher but moved off) also true with Yount that maybe just maybe Jeter fits in with. Top 10 of all-time (arguably). Top 5. No way. A couple of others to think about Dick Groat and Jim Fregosi (who just died this morning)...I am sure I am forgetting somebody.
