  1. Living in DC suburbs--familiar with Espinosa--like getting Espinosa from Nats--we do need MI depth--especially if Dozier's 2013 2nd half is a fluke. I wouldn't give up a top prospect, but one of our bullpen guys (not Perkins) or a low prospect would be a good trade. Doubt if Nats would take Doumit or Willingham off our hands.
  2. I am hesitant to make trade with this guy's past history. DO NOT TRADE a top 10 prospect for him. DO NOT TRADE one of the cavalry (Stewart, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Barrios). If you could get him for say Adam Walker and one other low level (below 25 in Seth's list) then maybe. But force Beane to take Doumit off our hands.
  3. Initially I was surprised by this move. Then I thought about it, Liam will be 25 next season--he is 2-13 in MLB with an ERA of about 6. Not numbers that will lead to a lot of waiver claims (if any). I hope he finds a way to get back to the show somewhere but realistically don't expect it. If things go well several more guys will have to be cleared from the 40 man roster in 2014 to make room for Sano, Buxton, etc. I expect Collobello, Thielbar, etc. to not be here next year.
  4. Outstanding post--I realize that these lists are very subjective. However, in the young low minor pitchers category you have 5 guys listed (Stewart, Barrios, Thorpe, Gonsalves and Eades) (hope I didn't miss one). Arguably Gonsalves had the best season of the five last year and you have him at 19 and Stewart at 3. Now none of us know which of these guys will make it and which will falter and which will have Tommy John (though with the Twins bet on most having Tommy John). Given all that, I think you put Stewart too high and Gonsalves too low.
  5. I agree now the Twins need help in the field if they are gonna get past 72 (or so) wins. Our OF defense at this point is horrid and yes we strike out too much. I am sure help is on the way by 2015--even though not all will be stars--but Sano, Buxton, Hicks, Pinto should all be here by then. Maybe even Rosario (after he serves the 50 games). Ditch Willingham or Doumit for what little you can get ASAP and ditch the other at the AS break. Until Buxton and Hicks are ready go with Arcia, Parmalee and Pressly in the OF and pray for the pitchers. Willingham and Doumit DH till they are gone. When Sano is ready move either Plouffe or Sano to RF and Arcia to DH. Hope Dozier is for real (serious doubts) and that Rosario can be ready in 2015... Yup lots of wishing and hoping...if half of Pinto, Sano, Hicks and Buxton live up to potential maybe we can get to 500...
  6. I wonder if the Twins will non-tender either Swarzek or Duensing to create a needed spot on the 40 man roster (39 now) for Hughes and Nolasco. Albers, Hendricks, Deduno and Gibson can all be put in the long relief spot...just a thought...may be out in LF.
  7. Like Shane I am not a big fan of this signing. Its OK--not great. What is Nolasco--an innings eater yes, an ace--no. On a playoff team he is a number 4 starter. Is he better than anybody the Twins have now--maybe. His career numbers are basically 190-200 IP a year with an ERA of 4.37. Last year Corriea threw 185 innings with an ERA of 4.18. Pretty similar. It will help with the pen--good. As somebody suggested maybe we can reduce our pen and add an extra bench guy which is good when the minor injuries crop up. Nolasco is 31 (or will be soon)--so is starting the downside of his career. He has only been an NL pitcher so not used to facing DH instead of pitcher. I am not a fan of WAR I will admit. As to FIP--we have to remember that Twins defense is below average--with Willingham, Doumit, Arcia in the corners and Presley in CF--a lot of flies turn into singles and singles into doubles. I would be very surprised if Nolasco has a winning record in 2014 or an ERA much lower than Correia. This probably adds 3-4 wins to our total at best. I hope in the third year of this contract (2016) Nolasco is a 4 starter (if on the team) behind the likes of Meyer, Stewart, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Barrios etc. My other worry is if Twins sign another free agent--will money be available in 2016 for Sano, Buxton, Meyer etc.
  8. I am an older guy (a grandpa actually) and a traditionalist. I firmly believe that first ballot election to HOF is special and should be reserved for the truly elite like Mays, Musial, Aaron etc. This year that is Greg Maddox--arguably the best pitcher of the past 30 years. I also believe that steroids shouldn't disqualify the truly elite (Bonds and Clemons) who were so far above the rest. I know I am in the minority here. My ballot--Maddox, Clemons, Bonds, Biggio, and Morris (hard choice but most wins in the 90s). That's it. Next year add the Big Hurt and Glavine. As Thyrlos says--it is the HOF of the very good not the mediocre.
  9. I am dead set against giving any of these guys 4 (or god forbid) 5 year deals. They are not that good. I would go for 3 years (max) for younger guys (Hughes, Johnson maybe, Garza). Correia has one spot, Gibson has one spot. Hopefully Meyer claims a spot next year--Diamond/Deduno gets a spot. In 2016 (hopefully) the young guys in A or lower will start coming up (Stewart, Gonsalves, Thorpe, etc etc) We don't need 34 or 35 year old pitchers hanging on then.
  10. Since he is a southpaw I would give Kazmir a 2 year (up to 25mill) deal. I wouldn't give him a 3rd year (2016) since by then the cavalry should be arriving. Kazmir scares me with his WHIP which is high--yes it is driven by BABIP--but remember its the Twins defense we are talking about--until Hicks and Buxton get here--with the possible exception of Florimon--nobody is average or better on defense--our pitchers will be having high BABIP against them.
  11. Yes a waste of time--the chances of a 34 year old Bartlett playing for the Twins in 2014 are slim and none. He wont take playing time away from Rosario, etc. at Rochester either. I am one of the people here hoping Rosario stays at 2B because I am not convinced Dozier's 2013 second half wasn't a fluke.
  12. Seth: I have enjoyed reading this series. While, I have been following baseball for about55 years, I don't have your expertise in ranking prospects. I also wonder if it really matters how you rank Sano, Rosario and Meyer (2-4)--we all hope they all will be up sometime in 2014 and contributing. I have also seen many hyped prospects have decent careers (starting with the guy we called Loop Narc in college--Eddie Kranepool who was supposd to be the next Lou Gehrig--they went to the same HS--but turned out to have a Cuddyer like career--which was better than a kid named Chilcott--a catcher drafted 1st overall right ahead of Reggie Jackson who never made it). In any case, I group prospects as follows: First wave (along with Hicks and Arcia) Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Meyer and Pinto Possible additions (ranked 6-9) AB Walker, Harrison, May and Polanco (and maybe Santana) The cavalry (pitchers who may start arriving in 2016 but most wont make it--hopefully one is an ace) Stewart, Gonsalves, Berrios, Thorpe, T. Rogers, Duffey, Sulbarin, B. Lee Others with a chance for2016 or 2017: Goodrum, Kepler, DJ Hicks...
  13. I would trade Dozier (who should bring in more than Doumit or the hammer) this off-season to try to get pitching to bridge the gap until the cavalry gets here and give Rosario a shot.
  14. That is my concern too. I don't have much faith in either May or Gibson to be more than back of the rotation guys (Diamond, Correia types). I am counting on Meyer to be an Ace in 2015 or 6. Pitching seems to be coming--but it is low As--I call it the cavalry--guys like Stewart, Gonsalves, Berrrios, and older guys like Duffey and Rogers and Lee and the others (potentially). This wave may come in 2016 but more likely 2017.
  15. Thanks Seth for the prospect definition--also for all the work you do. I have learned a lot from reading you--I agree the comparison between Barrios and Gonsalves (a year apart) is interesting. As to Pinto--count me among the commenters here that he should have been top 10 but we can agree to disagree.
  16. OOPs--that should have been top 5 not top 5
  17. I am definitely looking forward to the prospect list (6-10) assuming the top 6 are Buxton, Sano, Meyer, Rosario and Stewart. I was a little surprised Pinto didn't make top 10--I am hoping that he starts a lot with Twins and Mauer goes to first. (In all honesty, I expect Joe will catch until the next injury--if that happens the Pinto should go to Rochester and get playing time.) I may be biased since Gonsalves was one of my adapt-a-prospects, but I think he is top 10. I know he is young, and he looks like he could be a bit of a head case, but I think his ceiling is unlimited (Sabathia type ace). That is a higher ceiling than May who spent 2 years in the Eastern League IMHO. Also, I don't remember Berrios being listed (I may have missed him) but I would rank Gonsalves ahead of Berrios too. Not that I have anywhere near Seth's experience in this... BTW: Is Aaron Hicks still considered a prospect?? Or did he spend too much time with the Twins.
  18. Surprised to see Eades this high. You pointed out his disastrous numbers this year. 2014 is a key year for him--presumably at Cedar Rapids. For me, he must show something or I will consider him a bust. On the other hand, another chip for Gonsalves to have on his shoulder considering the Twins picked Eades ahead of him...
  19. I would take a flyer (like Pelfrey) on him. One year 8 or 9 million. Max 2 year 15 million. Maybe he could be a stop gap till the young guys (Berrios, Stewart, Gonsalves) are ready.
  20. Seth: good work as usual. I too would like to see the Twins organization take a chance on this Aussie kid and start him in Cedar Rapids instead of Extended Spring Training. Lets see if he can handle low A batters right off.
  21. As opposed to Lincecom and Haren--I would prefer a flyer on Hughes (max. 3 years 40 million). Good point on getting away from the House that Ruth (George??) built and the AL East. I am not sure how much better than Correia he would be but worth a flyer more so than Haren or Lincecom.
  22. This guy has lost 29 games in the last two years with an ERA approaching 5--numbers that are Pelfrey like. Do we want to throw $30 million at him?? Really?? Same with Haren.
  23. My story is a little different--I came via the Bat Girl, Howard Sinker route...I love the minor league stuff on this site and adapted two prospects in 2013. Lately I have gotten frustrated by some of the comments and negativity and have started posting less...this site is the SLOWEST to lead of all sites I visit and I find that very frustrating. I will continue to visit and read stuff that Seth and Nick post. I have started just skimming comments, I may become more of a lurker and not sure I will adapt another prospect.
  24. 1- The Twins will bid for Tanaka and come up short with the winning bid and fee to total about $140million. 2- No way they sign a veteran catcher--Joe wants to catch, he will catch half the games and Pinto the rest. 3- Since the bar is low--the Twins will sign a pitcher for 2-3 years for $25-30 million who will disappoint--think Lincecom or Hughes--if lucky they will put up numbers equal to Corriera or Pelfrey (who will be resigned). 4- Sano will be 3B--not sure if before June 3 (my birthday) or not. 5- Gardy and Anderson love Duensing. He will be back.
  25. I would be in favor of this trade. I think Espinosa would be a good fit with the Twins. I doubt Nats GM would make trade straight up--we would probably have to throw one of our minor league hitters (DJ Hicks??) in.
