  1. I join others in thanking Seth (and Jeremy) for these daily updates. I have never followed the minors like I did this year--really enjoyed it--as opposed to the routine the past few years of tuning out baseball sometime in June when it was obvious the Twins were done...
  2. I have been following the Kernels closely--Berrios hit a wall a few weeks ago and pretty much struggled to the end of the season. I agree with JC (or SD) the pitching was OK in the playoffs--hard to win when you only get 4 hits in the game (what the Kernels got in game 1).
  3. Somebody above said that Trevor is not Cuddyer...well try it...like they did with Cuddy...tell Trevor he will get the RF job when Sano is ready...and leave him there for a month or two...it worked with Cuddy a few years back...it is worth a shot.
  4. Brett Lee Update 20 Hopefully this wont be the last update in 2013. The Cedar Rapids Kernels began their post-season tonight. Unfortunately, the vaunted Kernels offense didn't show up. The Kernels managed a grand total of 4 hits and lost 2-1. Brett got the start--he didn't take the loss he left with the game tied 1-1. Brett considering his pitching load this year did well but not great. He went 5 innings giving up the one run (it was earned) 4 hits, walking 3 (not good). The rest was better he retired 7 via the ground ball, 1 flyout and 6Ks. MILB.com boxscore stats (like BA and ERA) are for post-season only--so I will not add to second half stats. If Brett gets another post-season appearance--for that to happen the Kernels must win the next 2 and then Brett get a start towards the end of the second round series--I will combine post season appearances. If the Kernels don't win the next 2--they are done. I will post a wrap after the Kernel season is done. For now, I will say that Brett accomplished more than I expected--he turned out to be a top of the Kernels rotation guy when I expected to see him in the pen after June.
  5. Thanks for great article...bodes well for Twins future...more so than talking about acquiring free agent pitchers like Hughes...there is a nucleus of a contender at Cedar Rapids and Ft. Myers...lots of guys have a chance for 2 rings in 2 years...good to see.
  6. A year ago, I was thinking the Twins would contend in 2015. Now I am not so sure. We have some of the pieces (Buxton, Sano, Mauer if he stays healthy)...maybe Dozier or Rosario, maybe Parmalee or Hicks...but the key is pitching. Here we have Albers, Diamond, Gibson, Deduno (all potentially good number 3 starters). Meyer (can he stay healthy) could be an ace. Other prospects (Stewart, Gonsalves, Berrios) are 2-4 years away at best. We have very little to trade (outside of Hicks, Buxton, Sano, Rosario)...to fill in the holes (SS and P). I don't know--my guess is 75-80 wins in 2014, with luck 85 in 2015 maybe contend in 2016 but hard to be hopeful.
  7. Seth: Now that E-town is done--any chance that Stewart and Gonsalves go to Cedar Rapids for the playoffs?? Berrios seems to have hit a wall and Brett Lee and others have thrown a lot of innings.
  8. Yes, Justin was going to be non-tendered anyway--no point in keeping him here another month when Parmalee needs playing time to see if he is the answer. We need to open a roster spot for Sano this winter--that was going to be Morneau. Whether the PTBNL turns out to be anything or not--we needed to do this. Now get rid of Willingham for whatever we can get.
  9. Thanks SD (or JC your alter ego) for the post...wonder about Lee hitting the wall (so to speak) like Berrios apparently has...hopefully cooler weather for the playoffs (in Sept.).
  10. To my surprise, I figured Jake Mauer and the Twins pitching gurus would keep Brett in the pen until the playoffs--limiting his innings, Brett Lee made his 11th second half appearance (and 9th start) tonight. He was impressive--and should continue to move up Seth's list (or be one of his 5 overlooked pitching prospects or both). Brett got the win as the vaunted Kernels offense (but not Adam B. Walker) showed up behind him. Brett's next appearance should be starting for the Kernels in the playoffs (maybe game 1). He has earned it. We will ignore the fact that Brett has pitched 116 innings in 2012. Tonight Brett went 6 innings--almost perfect. He gave up zero (nada) runs, only 3 hits and a single BB. He struck out 5. Brett's (presumably) final second half stats--57.1 IP, 13 runs (9 earned), 42 hits, 8 BB, 45Ks. He has retired 74 via the grounder vs. 21 via the fly. (That's a 3.5 ratio.) His K/BB is 5.625 and his K per 9 innings is about 7 (very impressive even though less than my other "adapt a prospect" Stephen Gonsalves). Brett's second half WHIP is 0.87. His second half ERA is 2.04. All of these numbers are pretty impressive--his numbers for the year are (slightly) less so--I will post all year numbers post-playoffs (which hopefully wont end before mid-Sept.) When I started this blog, I thought Brett had a future with the Twins as the lefty reliever (long or short). Now I wonder if he has a role as a back of the rotation starter...we will learn more in 2014 at New Britain or Ft. Myers. For the year, Brett is 8-4 with an ERA of 2.95.
  11. Next year....not now...let him pitch in the AFL and keep him below 175IP for the season...then see what he does in spring training.
  12. I like your comparison--and yes Stephen gets a fantastic number of Ks...the question is will he continue to get the Ks as he moves up the Twins organization and faces hitters at Cedar Rapids who are much better than in the Appy League. None of us know the answer--we will find out next year.
  13. No...definitely going to see NB in Bowie next year. My son and I were planning on going but tough for him (both of us actually) with a 10 day old baby (his son, my grandson).
  14. Stephen Gonsalves Update #8 Stephen made his third E-town start tonight. He was on the wrong end of a pitching duel and took his first professional loss as E-town dropped a 2-0 game. The E-town offense managed a grand total of 3 hits. For 2013 and his career Stephen is 2-1. Getting all the bad news out of the way--Stephen continued his bad ground/fly trend by getting only two ground outs to 3 fly outs. As some of you have expressed--this is minor--but it has been a trend at E-town--we shall see if it continues next year in Cedar Rapids where he will face better hitters (presumably). The good news--the rest of his outing. Stephen pitched 5 innings--he struck out 9. He has 39Ks in 28.1 IP which is fantastic. In the 5 innings, he gave up 1 run (earned) 3 hits and walked 2. That is better numbers than almost anybody has put up with the Twins in any game all year. He definitely shows top of the rotation potential. For the year (combining GCL and E-town) Stephen is 2-1 with an ERA of 0.95. (He has given up only 3 runs--all earned--in the 28.1 IP) His K/BB ratio is 39/11 or 3.55 Ks for every walk. His WHIP is 1.023. His ground/fly ratio (even with a downward trend at E-town) is 1.4 grounders to fly outs. These are all pretty DAM good if not outstanding. Still looking like a steal in the draft.
  15. Brett Lee Update #18 The Twins minor league pitching gurus are obviously being very cautious with Brett. He hasn't made a start in about 10 days. With good reason--Brett has now pitched 110 innings in 2013. Brett has made 2 bullpen appearances in this span. He pitched 1 inning in each (8/20 and today). So in two innings he has been perfect--faced 6 batters--retired them all--no hits, no walks, no runs. He struck out 1 (today) and the other 5 ground out. His ERA for the year is now down to 3.11. His record is still 7-4. I am not going to update ratios (2 IP out of 110 wont change much). Obviously, they all (very) slightly improved... Unless Brett starts next week--no update till end of season--then I will summarize everything. Hopefully, Brett gets a playoff start as a reward for a good (no outstanding) season.
  16. I think you are probably right that you can stick a fork in him--Johan is done--I figure a 90% chance of that. But resign him on the 10% chance he isn't done.
  17. Yes, shut him down now--at most give him one start in Rochester and a token playoff appearance...He will be in the Twins rotation next year if only by default. The Twins have a few pitching prospects in the low minors led by Stewart and Gonsalves and a bunch at Cedar Rapids. The next couple of years are a test of the Twins minor league pitching gurus and medical staff--if by the end of 2015 none of these kids are up here (or worse several are hurt)--then we need to change the minor league pitching coaching staff.
  18. I have gone to a couple of Nats games (including seeing the Twins here). My son is a partial season ticket holder and has gone to a bunch. He has seen Haren several times. The frigging disaster is his evaluation. The Nats wont try to resign Haren for sure. Based on his reports--Haren is done. This is not a big reward opportunity. Maybe a 10% chance of being a decent starter. Most likely a repeat of Marquis, Ponson, etc. If the Twins could get him on a 1 year $5 million contract and take a shot that he will be better than Pelfrey or Corriea--go for it. I doubt they will see results. If some team is foolish enough to give Haren a 3 year $20 million deal--it better not be the Twins.
  19. I am not impressed by any of these. I live in DC area--I can tell you that "below expectations" is mild for Haren--he has been an absolute frigging disaster. Lincecom has had 3 bad years in a row. Maybe Hughes Santana and Nolasco--maybe not. I would go after Josh Johnson --but he will be two expensive and would he even come here. None of these guys has potential to come back to a top of rotation (or even 2 or 3 guy).
  20. Stephen Gonsalves Update 7 Stephen made his 7th 2013 (and career) appearance tonight. It was his 4th start and his second start for E-Town. He only went 4 innings--I am assuming the Twins minor league pitching gurus are limiting him considering it is his professional debut and he did pitch HS ball this spring. Stephen went 4 innings and will not be involved in the decision. As I type, the game is in the 7th inning and tied 1-1. Stephen pitched well--4IP, no runs, 3 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. He has a unbelievable 30Ks in 23.1 IP for the 2013 season. The bad news--he continued his downward trend in ground/fly ratio (for 3rd straight game). He got only one ground out (and 2 fly outs). He also had a balk, a WP and a throwing error. All 3 in one game is not good. Maybe it suggests Stephen is only human. Still he had a great night--and still looks like a steal in the 4th round. Again the true test comes next year at Perfect Game Field (Cedar Rapids) for both him and Kohl. For 2013 Stephen has pitched 23.1 innings, given up 2 runs (both earned) 15 hits, 9BB and gotten the 30Ks. His ground to fly ratio is still good (but trending down) 19/12 or 1.58 grounders/fly. His K/BB ratio is better than 3/1. His WHIP is 1.03. His ERA is less than 1 (0.77).
  21. Brett Lee Update 17 Brett made his 8th second half appearance tonight (all starts). He pitched 4.2 innings and did not get a decision--the game was tied 2-2 when he was lifted. The vaunted Kernels offense showed up in the 6th and 7th innings (without Adam Walker who went 0/3) and the Kernels won 6-5. Brett is now at 108 IP for the season (which is substantially more than he pitched last year) and being watched closely by the Twins pitching gurus. It was an OK start--not good--not bad. He pitched 4.2 innings giving up 2 runs (both earned) on 6 hits. He walked 2 and got 4Ks. Most impressively, he got 8 ground outs to 0 flies. His second half stats and ratios took a minor hit (outside of ground/fly). He has pitched 49.1 innings giving up 13 runs (9 earned), 39 hits, walked 7 and struck out 39. That makes his K/BB ratio 5.55. His WHIP is 0.94; his second half ERA 1.65 and his ground/fly ratio (74/19)3.89. For the year, Brett is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.17.
  22. I am hesitant to send him to the AFL this fall--why not just conclude 2013 was a lost year and let him rest. Definitely start him in Rochester in 2014--no need to spend another year in AA.
  23. I agree--he deserves to get the Sept. cup of coffee. Clearing a roster spot from the 40 man wont be that much of a problem--maybe that's why Morneau is on waivers anyway. Give him a few games at 3B or 1B. Whether Sano starts next year at Rochester or Minnesota will depend on spring training. If he starts in Minnesota and is overwhelmed like Hicks was, OK give him a month in Rochester. I hope the Twins FO ignores the service clock issues and gives Sano a long-term contract in 2015 anyway.
  24. Seth and Jeremy: This may be the wrong thread to post this--but in checking MILB.com for Stephen Gonsalves update--noticed the Kernels put Berrios on the DL--is this a serious injury or just a rest to control innings--like they did to Brett Lee??
  25. Stephen Gonsalves Update 6: First off--I don't tweet as a soon-to-be grandpa who is on Medicare--I don't adapt well to technology (:-). So thanks to whomever posted Stephen's tweet (yes a bit cocky, but good to see the attitude). Second--the bad news--and it needs to be said--it may be only a little thing--Stephen's ground ball to fly ball ratio has taken a hit in his last two (otherwise outstanding) starts. Yesterday, Stephen got only 4 ground outs vs. 3 flies. For his year (and career) he has 18 ground outs to 10 fly outs. For the first time that ratio is under 2/1 and trending down. It may mean nothing. It may mean a future problem. Now to Stephens Appy League debut. He pitched 5 innings (the first time over 3 in his career). He gave up one run--it was earned. He also gave up 4 hits. He got 7Ks and issued no walks. A truly outstanding Appy League debut and another sign that the Twins may have gotten a steal in the draft. The true test will come in 2014 (presumably at Cedar Rapids). For the year (and his Twins career)--Stephen has made 3 starts in 6 appearances totaling 19.1 IP. He has given up 2 runs (both earned) 12 hits, walked 7 and struck out 25. That gives him a WHIP of almost exactly 1.0; an outstanding K/BB ratio of 3.57 and an ERA of 0.93. Yes, these ratios make him a steal in the 4th round so far!!
