Brett Lee Update 24 As the Miracle radio announcer said when Brett came off the mound, Brett didn't have his best stuff tonight. Far from it. In his last 2014 appearance (unless Daytona wins two games and Brett is in the pen for game 5), Brett went 5.2 innings giving up 5 runs (all earned), 8 hits and 4 BB. He struck out one, got 12 on ground outs and 1 via the fly. Brett also continued to bring rain--game was delayed at the start for over an hour. He will not get the decision--score was tied when Dougie Baseball went out to pull him. Brett continued his mediocre post-season record in contrast to his good regular season record. Even with that he finished 2014 without giving up a triple or home run in 115 innings pitched. I will post a career summary after the Miracle finish.

Brett is a southpaw. It seems that southpaws get picked in the Rule V draft more than others--teams figure they can stash one in the bullpen for a year and bring them on for a batter or two and the following year send them to AAA. Brett had more Ks last year and is a definite Ground ball pitcher. I wouldn't be surprised to see somebody take a flyer on him in the Rule V draft.

The New Top Twins Pitching Prospect?
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No doubt Berrios had a great 2014 season and moved up the prospect list. He is 20 years old--no need to rush him. Start him in Rochester in 2015 and keep him there until the AS Break. He will hit the inevitable bump in the road sooner or later--if he doesn't in the first half of 2015, then maybe bring him up or let him refine his craft in AAA. He will turn 22 in 2016--he can come up then. -
Brett Lee Update 23 For the second year in a row, Brett started the first playoff game of the Twins minor league affiliate he is pitching for. For the second year in a row, it didn't go well. Reading the story and box score and log on MILB.com, it appears to have been one of the most bizarre games ever...it had a little bit of everything including a rain delay of almost an hour. Brett played a small role. He didn't make it thru the second inning. His line is almost as bizarre as the game. Brett pitched 1.2 innings, giving up 7 runs on 4 hits and a walk. He did strike out 2. The Miracle defense committed 3 errors behind him making NONE of the runs earned. (Goodrum had two errors.) Brett escaped the loss when the Miracle rallied to win the game. Brett has still not given up a triple or HR in 2014. The box score shows 5 ground outs to only 1 fly. That equals six outs--so something is wrong--he only got 5. I don't count post-season stats as part of the regular season--so not adding to his ratios. Brett didn't help his cause to be added to the 40 man roster this winter--he could be exposed to the rule V draft. I don't think he hurt it much either.

Twins Promote Eight for September
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Glad to see Hicks called up--hope he gets a chance to play a lot and Santana gets some time at SS. This is probably last opportunity for Hicks. I believe the Twins are showing that Colobello and Florimon will be dropped from the 40 man roster this fall to create spots for Meyer, Sano, Rosario and others like Micheal. Surprised Bernier and Herman were called up--probably at Gardy's request. I hope Pinto gets a bunch of time at C. -
Brett Lee Update 22 Continuing my tradition of posting every start...Brett made (presumably) his last start of 2014 tonight. It was basically a bullpen session to get ready for the FSL playoffs. Brett went 1 inning--the rest of his line was 0. (nada hits, runs, bb or k). He faced 3 batters--2 grounded out, one flied out. That's it. Given that, I am not updating ratios, etc. Unless he makes another start--Brett will finish 2014 with a record of 10-5 with an ERA of 2.46 and not giving up a triple or home run. I will post here after his (expected) playoff start. After the post-season is over, I will wrap up the year.

Brett Lee Update 21 Brett may (or may not) have made his last 2014 regular season start. On his current schedule, Brett is due to pitch Sunday (last game) but I suspect he may be held back for playoffs. Brett continued his recent up and down trend. Tonight was down. He went 4.2 IP and took the loss. He gave up 6 hits, 3 runs (all earned, walked 4, struck out 1 and hit a batter. Not good. For the second half of 2014, Brett has gone 59.1 IP, giving up 20 runs (17 earned), 53 hits, issued 24 BB and collected 28 punch outs. He has gotten 33 fly ball outs and 88 ground outs. All of his ratios have taken a hit. Ground to fly is 2.67, k/9 is 4.26, k/bb is 1.167, and WHIP 1.298. All ratios assume that both my math and typing are correct. I have trouble lately on Twins Daily posting--does anybody els??? For 2014 Brett is 10-5 with an ERA of 2.48. A solid season worthy of promotion to New Britain in 2015. He has still not given up a three bagger or tater in 2014,

Suddenly, Shortstops!
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I take a different approach. I leave Santana in CF--lots of CF played SS in the minors starting with the Mick. Lets face it, Buxton wont be here until Sept. 2015 at the earliest--2014 was a lost season for him. Put Danny in CF next year and see if he repeats this year. Keep Escobar at SS. -
Brett Lee Update 20 We are getting towards the end of the season and the time of year decisions have to be made. Discussion of the winter changes to the 40 man roster has already begun on Twins Daily. Brett has to be added or he will be exposed to the Rule V draft. Tonight, he made his case. He pitched his 10th quality start of 2014. He went 7 innings giving up 2 runs (both earned). He "scattered" 11 hits (all singles outside of 1 double). He walked 1 and picked up 3Ks. He showed once again he is a ground ball pitcher (1 fly out). For the second half of 2014, Brett has pitched 54.2 IP, giving up 17 runs (14 earned), 47 hits, 20 BB and getting 27Ks 29 fly outs and 82 ground outs. His K/9 4.5; k/bb 1.35; ground to fly 2.83 and his WHIP is 1.226. All of the above numbers assume my math is correct as is my typing. TD is being really obstinate right now. For the year, Brett is 10-4 with an ERA of 2.32. He has still not given up a triple or tater in all of 2014!! Brett should definitely be moving up on Seth's (and other) prospect lists and deserves 40 man roster consideration. I look forward to him starting at New Britain in 2015.

40-man roster considerations
DAM DC Twins Fans commented on Shane Wahl's blog entry in Field of Twins
Great article. I am assuming this will be a big discussion point in October. I have thought about this a little--waiting for the off-season. I agree with the depth in the Twins minor league system--we cant keep guys like Colobello, Fryer and Florimon. Yes, some of the guys like Wheeler and Lee may have to be exposed in the Rule V draft. Some initial thoughts: 1. Give up on Rosario who has had a horrid year after the suspension (or at least expose him to draft)?? 2 Given minor league depth--is this the right off-season to make big trade (like Nats did for Gio) giving up a bunch of prospects for a young rising star?? 3. DFA Pelfrey and Nolasco (opening up 2 roster spots) but eating money?? I don't envy front office in October. -
Tough year for Cuddy--2 stints on the DL including one for 60 days. Glad to see him get the cycle.

Brett Lee Update 19 Well, Brett followed up possibly his best start in the 2 seasons he has been my AAP with possibly his worst one. I can not find one positive thing to report. Just hope this was a blip. Brett struggled thru 3 innings, giving up 5 runs (all earned), 8 hits (2 doubles--OK a positive note--NO TRIPLES or HOMERS given up this season) He walked 3, struck out 1 and hit a batter. He even managed not to get his usual more ground outs than flies. (5 fly, 3 go). For the second half. Brett has pitched 47.2 IP, giving up 15 runs (12 earned), 46 hits, walked 19, got 24 Ks, 70 grounders to 25 flies. His ratios (assuming as always my math is good) K/9 is 4.53; K/BB is 1.26, ground to fly is 2.80 and his WHIP is 1.36. All of these took a hit tonight (or last night actually). For the year Brett still owns an impressive record of 9-4 with an ERA of 2.31.

To Drock: (not sure how to get the quote to work). Lee had a better K rate in CR last year. He has a decent K rate (4.6 per 9) in Ft. Myers. He has an outstanding ground/fly ratio and had one last year too. I think he will be fine in New Britain in 2015--but none of us know for sure.

Thanks Goulik. I am trying to get everybody's attention. I am afraid Brett will not be protected in Rule V draft and be picked up.

Collabello went down to make room -
Brett Lee Update 18 Brett (to my surprise) was not named on Seth's pitcher of the month list for July. Once again--missing on prospect lists seems to motivate Brett to prove people wrong. Tonight (last night actually) Brett pitched his best game in the two seasons he has been my AAP. He threw his second consecutive complete game--but this one was a true complete game--A NINE INNING shut-out of St. Lucie Mets. Brett scattered 7 singles and walked 3. He got 4 Ks, 12 ground outs, and 5 fly outs. He was supported (for once) by the Miracle defense--3 twin killings, and 2 Mets caught stealing. For the 2014 second half--Brett has pitched 44 innings, giving up 10 runs (7 earned), 38 hits (all singles except for 7 doubles), struck out 23 and walked 16. He has 67 ground outs to 20 flies. That makes his ground/fly ratio 3.35, his k/bb 1.44, his k/9 4.6 and his WHIP 1.209. Whether these numbers merit inclusion on the 40 man roster this off-season I don't know. I do believe they do. In any case, they merit a season at New Britain in 2015. For the year Brett is 9-3 with an ERA of 1.89!!

I agree pitching depth in the lower minors is impressive. It will be interesting in the next couple of years as these guys get to NB and Rochester how they shake out. I was surprised that my AAP (Brett Lee--5 starts--31.2 IP, WHIP 1.105, etc.) didn't make list--then I reviewed list--wouldn't be top 5--could be honorable mention--but a sign of deep depth as they say.

Brett Lee Update 17 The Miracle offense was non-existant tonight (1 hit). Brett had one of his worse outings of the year. Then it rained. Not a good night. Brett pitched a complete game (kind of) he went all 4 innings of the rain-shortened affair. (That was the best thing you could say about it.) In the 4 innings, Brett gave up 4 runs (all earned) and 8 hits (3 doubles and the rest singles--he has still NOT given up a three bagger or tater). He walked 1 and got 1 punch out. He picked up 5 ground ball outs and 2 fly outs. He also picked off a runner. This sets back his ratios for the second half during which he has pitched 35.2IP, given up 10 runs (7 earned), 31 hits (7 doubles), walked 13 and struck out 19. He has 55 ground outs to 15 flies. That makes his ground/fly ratio 3.67, his K/bb ratio 1.46, his k/9 4.70 and his WHIP 1.233. (as usual, ratios assume my math is correct). Still good, not as good as last post. For the year, Brett is 8-3 with ERA of 2.10.

Should the Twins Consider a Six-Man Rotation?
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Long term don't like 6 man rotations--too long between starts. Short-term maybe. I would go with Hughes, Gibson, Milone and May on regular basis and rotate 5th spot with Meyer, Johnson and Darnell. Shut Nolasco down for year--and try to trade him during offseason. Same with Correia. Take what little we can get. I would give Deduno a couple of starts in August because we need to know whether to keep him on the 40 man roster--Twins need rosters spots for the group that becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter.- 42 replies

I agree with Duluth fan. As much as I want to see Buxton in Target Field--it would be a HUGE mistake to bring him up this year. The Org. chart page is still being rebuilt--but I believe the now well stocked Twins farm system has about 15 players who become eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year and some (most) need to be added to the 40 man roster or they will be lost. Big names like Sano, Meyer, Rosario will be for sure. Others include Gilmartin, Goodrum, Grimes, Jason Wheeler, and Levi Michael. I believe my AAP Brett Lee should be on that list. Obviously, some will be left unprotected--but Buxton to the 40 man takes up a spot. This is the Twins future.

First, Brett is only 23. He turns 24 after minor league season ends. Interesting comp to Langston--Brett has been my AAP for last 2 seasons and I was trying to come up with a comp. I started with Duensing--a lefty spot starter and reliever. However, Brett has developed into a good back of the rotation starter. Nowhere near CC Sabathia front of the rotation guy. So yes, Langston is interesting comp. He hasn't been getting the Ks this year that he did second half last year. But he has been getting the groundball outs. I agree we need to see Brett in New Britain (but post-season for Ft. Myers may play a role here). Question: Who has to be added to 40 man this offseason?? I thought it was 2011 draft class which includes Brett and most of the guys now at Ft. Myers like Walker and DJ Hicks. Does that come into consideration when adding guys like Buxton now who don't need to be.

Article: Gary Lucas On Jo Berrios
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article as usual Seth. Following the pitchers in A ball the last couple of years, I am happily surprised at the big improvement Berrios has shown. Hopefully, he keeps it up in 2015 at New Britain and Rochester and is in the Twins rotation in 2016. I did wonder about his innings count--don't expect him to go to fall league--actually wonder if he will be on a pitch count limit the rest of the year at NB. -
Brett Lee Update 16 MLB.com issued their latest list of top 20 Twins prospects this morning. Brett was not on it!! A HUGE mistake IMHO. Look at his stats over the last year and a half (see above). In any case, Brett showed tonight he should be. Yes, he had a big lead--but not until the top of the 5th. Brett may have pitched his best game in the season and a half he has been my AAP. He threw 7 SHUTOUT innings!! He gave up a grand total of 3 hits--all singles. Yes, he only struck out 1 (and issued one walk). He also showed he is a groundball pitcher--all of the outs came via the grounder except for one fly and the K. He deserves consideration from Seth for both pitcher of the day and pitcher of the month (July). For 2014 season second half (all in July except for a 3 inning shutout relief appearance June 30) Brett has pitched 5 starts (totaling 31.2 IP) 4 quality starts. He has given up 23 hits (4 doubles, the rest singles), allowed 6 runs but only 3 earned, struck out 18, issued 12 BB, gotten 50 grounds outs to only 13 fly outs. His ratios (as always assuming my math is correct). K/9 is about 5.12; K/BB 1.5; ground to fly 3.85; WHIP is 1.105. No more bragging. For the year (yes pitching behind the Miracle offense) Brett is 8-2 with an ERA of 1.75.

What Should be Done in the Next Five Days
DAM DC Twins Fans replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
My two cents... Offer Suzuki a two year 15 mill deal. If he takes it--fine. If not--trade him. Then start fire sale--Willingham, Correia, Nolasco, Plouffe, bullpen guys. We wont get much--but will open spots. Bring up Meyer, May, Hicks (Aaron not DJ), Pinto etc. Play them and see if they are part of the future or not. Trade Mauer if can find takers--his contract is albatross--so probably no takers. 2015--go with kids Buxton, Sano, Walker, DJ Hicks, etc. They will take lumps but give them chance. Bring up Dougie or Jake Mauer to manage and the other to coach (along with Watkins and Lucas). Gardy must be gone. Ryan too--with replacement outsde the Twins org.- 72 replies
