  1. I agree pitching depth in the lower minors is impressive. It will be interesting in the next couple of years as these guys get to NB and Rochester how they shake out. I was surprised that my AAP (Brett Lee--5 starts--31.2 IP, WHIP 1.105, etc.) didn't make list--then I reviewed list--wouldn't be top 5--could be honorable mention--but a sign of deep depth as they say.
  2. Long term don't like 6 man rotations--too long between starts. Short-term maybe. I would go with Hughes, Gibson, Milone and May on regular basis and rotate 5th spot with Meyer, Johnson and Darnell. Shut Nolasco down for year--and try to trade him during offseason. Same with Correia. Take what little we can get. I would give Deduno a couple of starts in August because we need to know whether to keep him on the 40 man roster--Twins need rosters spots for the group that becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter.
  3. I agree with Duluth fan. As much as I want to see Buxton in Target Field--it would be a HUGE mistake to bring him up this year. The Org. chart page is still being rebuilt--but I believe the now well stocked Twins farm system has about 15 players who become eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year and some (most) need to be added to the 40 man roster or they will be lost. Big names like Sano, Meyer, Rosario will be for sure. Others include Gilmartin, Goodrum, Grimes, Jason Wheeler, and Levi Michael. I believe my AAP Brett Lee should be on that list. Obviously, some will be left unprotected--but Buxton to the 40 man takes up a spot. This is the Twins future.
  4. First, Brett is only 23. He turns 24 after minor league season ends. Interesting comp to Langston--Brett has been my AAP for last 2 seasons and I was trying to come up with a comp. I started with Duensing--a lefty spot starter and reliever. However, Brett has developed into a good back of the rotation starter. Nowhere near CC Sabathia front of the rotation guy. So yes, Langston is interesting comp. He hasn't been getting the Ks this year that he did second half last year. But he has been getting the groundball outs. I agree we need to see Brett in New Britain (but post-season for Ft. Myers may play a role here). Question: Who has to be added to 40 man this offseason?? I thought it was 2011 draft class which includes Brett and most of the guys now at Ft. Myers like Walker and DJ Hicks. Does that come into consideration when adding guys like Buxton now who don't need to be.
  5. Great article as usual Seth. Following the pitchers in A ball the last couple of years, I am happily surprised at the big improvement Berrios has shown. Hopefully, he keeps it up in 2015 at New Britain and Rochester and is in the Twins rotation in 2016. I did wonder about his innings count--don't expect him to go to fall league--actually wonder if he will be on a pitch count limit the rest of the year at NB.
  6. I still think Gibson will follow the path of the previous Kyle (Lohse). We will never know which one will show up. What we saw last year in his stint here, or a pretty good prospect some project him to be. He does need to start at Rochester this year and work his way back. If Hughes, Nolasco, etc pitch well, then Gibson becomes excess. I do think between injuries and lack of effectiveness from one of the projected starters, Gibson will get a shot. IMHO he wont show much.
  7. I would go with Hicks. I think with the lower expectations and pressure, he will start out doing well at Rochester and have a great second half.
  8. Great article--like the category specification--that makes the pitching roster look reasonable. If you assume that Deduno is on DL in April, then ST is a fight for 5th starter between Diamond and Worley. Loser fights with Duensing and Swarzek for 2 long spots in pen and that loser is gone. So that's 9 spots. Group D battles to fill out pen and Gibson goes to Rochester.
  9. Living in DC suburbs--familiar with Espinosa--like getting Espinosa from Nats--we do need MI depth--especially if Dozier's 2013 2nd half is a fluke. I wouldn't give up a top prospect, but one of our bullpen guys (not Perkins) or a low prospect would be a good trade. Doubt if Nats would take Doumit or Willingham off our hands.
  10. I take these lists with very few grains...but yes Adam Walker needs to be on them... My adopt-a-prospect (Gonsalves) and Kohl Stewart who seem to be destined to be linked with each other are both on this list...between them they have pitched about 25 innings in their minor league careers...that is less than a small sample size...how can you project from that vs. Walker's whole season. To me, don't include 2013 draftees till next spring at the earliest.
  11. I think you overvalue the Twins players...I doubt we could get these level prospects for Morneau, Doumit, Plouffe, Willingham, etc. It reminds me of the Capps/Ramos deal--most GMs are smarter than Billy Smith and would want more than one of the 4 Twins for a top 200 prospect...
  12. interesting--I share a birthday with Nelson Liriano (best Twins player named Liriano IMHO) and Jim Dwyer...not quite up to the caliber of Rafa Nadal and Jefferson Davis who I also share a birthday with...but interesting
  13. I wonder if Redmond will build a team in Miami starting with the Jays prospects he took in trade and will actually stay there a while. Remember he knows those prospects better than most cause he managed in Jays system this year...
  14. I am starting to join the bandwagon of fire Anderson--if they are making Deduno into a Twins-type pitch-to-contact guy then thats a crime. We need more effectively wild guys.
  15. Storen is back--set up for now--a couple of mediocre appearances so far.
  16. Living in DC--I know the Nats are interested in Span. They DFAd Rick Ankeil so they have an OF spot. Be careful trading with Nats--go for young Lombardozzi and a prospect or two--NOT Storen...
  17. I am a firm believer in trading players high value (before it dips). Josh's value is at its high right now. So is Span's. Yes, Twins should consider trading both--Twins wont be a contender in 2013--maybe not 2014--then Josh will be a full-time DH (or should be). So if the Twins can get value--top prospect or two plus good number 3 starter--go for it.
  18. Ryan should be listening to offers--especially in areas where Twins have a bit of surplus like OF with Revere AND Span AND Willingham and guys like Hicks and Benson etc in minors. Ryan needs to be asking for starting pitching in exchange.
  19. I have been saying this for the last two seasons. Liriano is a relief pitcher not a starter. I think in two years he could be the closer with Perkins as set up. Put Liriano in the pen now and give Swarzek and Hendricks the ball every 5th day and maybe Duensing too.
  20. Good points. Gardy does not like to have his second catcher at DH--so I think Mauer will be at 1B once or twice a week. If Morneau is at 1B half the time--doesnt leave much playing time for Parmalee. Maybe a trip to Rochester until the AS break is in the cards when Marquis is put on the roster. Not a bad idea...
  21. JC-- I wish I could be as confident as you in Liriano and Casilla--I dont hold much hope for either--they have had many chances already...Casilla even if he hits seems to have those moments on the field that cause us all to cringe...I just dont think Liriano (even though he has the best stuff of Twins pitchers can put it together)...I do agree with you on Valencia...I am looking for a big season from him. By the way, since you go back to the Bat Girl days like me--do you miss her and do you know if she is blogging anywhere?? DAM
