  1. As a Target Field employee, I REALLY want them to to do better, because it makes work a whole lot more fun when they aren't sucking. That said, there are still bright spots, and it's still just April
  2. Hey, if anyone wants to dump some of their season tix later this year, let me know. I'll get a few games off from the roofdeck, and even if the team is terrible my 5 year old will have fun
  3. How is Oliveros doing down in AA?
  4. Apparently 1989 was the last time there was a left-handed catcher: http://bb_catchers.tripod.com/catchers/catchleft.htm
  5. Are left-handed guys not allowed to play 3b?
  6. I don't think the Twins want a full-time DH at this point. It's going to be months, if ever, that Morneau can be a full time 1b again, and if we want to keep Mauer, Doumit, and Willingham's bats in the lineup everyday, they're going to need to be able to DH every once in awhile. Even exploring the possibility of having a full-time DH while you are carrying 13 pitchers because of all the holes and question marks seems somewhat insane.
  7. Maybe we could coax Tim Wakefield out of retirement...hell, Phil Niekro is still alive...
  8. Honestly...I can't stand him. He talks like a coach. He narrates like he's in the film room, teaching the rookies how to play. When he starts getting nostalgic, he tends to ramble and not always make a lot of sense. He doesn't seem to get that people watch televised baseball for the excitement and entertainment value, not so they can learn how to play the game better. He is very knowledgable about the game, but not very knowledgable about the art of broadcasting. I wouldn't mind him stopping in from time to time, or being apart of the "post game instructional", but if he became the full-time color commentator, I'd probably turn the TV on mute and put the radio on.
  9. Yeah, the only way you're really going to be able to significantly cut down on TJ surgeries, is by a fundamental shift in expectations of pitchers and basic pitching mechanics at all levels, and that isn't going to happen any time soon.
  10. I would bet we start to see Morneau starting at first once a week for the next month or so, maybe twice a week when we hit interleague play, and up to three times a week after the all-star break. I think the best we can expect by season's end is 1b essentially becoming a platoon between Morneau and Parmalee. Morneau is only 30, he could have 10 more years left in him, they aren't going to rush for him to be a full-time fielder. Similarly, I don't think there's a huge rush in the organization to get Mauer out of the Catcher spot. As much as I liked Thome, he did make it a lot harder the last two years to give Morneau and Mauer time off the field without losing their bats. We can have Morneau DH half the time, give Mauer a day or two a week their, and fill in Doumit or whoever else needs at bats other times. The other thing I expect we'll see as the season progresses, is Morneau getting a day off, but then coming in late to PH and being able to stay in the game at 1st. As far as Parmalee, I don't know why people seem to think he needs tons of time in RF. He did spend almost half his minor league career in RF (282 out of 609 games), so he's more familiar with it already than Plouffe. And we really need another "adequate" RF guy? We already have Thomas, Plouffe, and Doumit vying for time out there, and we have great depth at OF in the minors. I'd certainly rather have Parmelee at 1b than Doumit at this point. If anything, I'd say teach Parmelee to play 3b if neither Burroughs or Valencia start hitting consistently.
  11. I came across an interesting rule that I was not aware of. Players can only be outrighted to the minors once in there career without their consent. Burroughs was outrighted last year by Arizona, and if he cleared waivers he could have forced the Twins to release him rather than accept a minor league assignment. I can see the argument made that they didn't want to actually lose anyone, and IF Hughes cleared waivers, they could keep him and bring him up later if needed, whereas it's not unlikely that Burroughs would have refused the assignment and sought out another club. As far as why they kept Plouffe over Hughes, my only guess is that they hope he'll eventually settle into a cuddyer-like role of adequate OF with a decent bat who can back up everyone.
  12. To be fair to the Twins, Liriano was in 2006, Neshek was in 2008 (neither of which were really a surprise given their mechanics), and the Twins had absolutely nothing to do with Zumaya's injury. So that leaves Nathan in 2010, Gibson in 2011, and Baker in 2012. At one a year, that doesn't exactly seem like it's an overwhelming number compared to other clubs, especially with how common the surgery is becoming.
  13. While Swarzak has been alright in the rotation, I think they could really use his help in the bullpen.
  14. Anyone have any actual numbers that would back up or refute the claims I've seen that the Twins have more pitchers getting TJ than any other club?
  15. I think if Valencia gets bumped, they'll give Burroughs a shot first. The other day when he started he looked pretty good in the field
  16. I have been pretty underwhelmed by Doumit's offensive prowess so far
  17. Hendriks was solid in his debut, hopefully he can keep that up
  18. 12 game hitting streak, and leading the league in homers? Gotta be one of the highlights of the season so far. Plus, my 5 year old has taken to calling him "Mr. Hammer"
  19. I've been mulling it over tonight, and the thought occurred to me that keeping Plouffe, Burroughs, and Parmalee over Hughes may be more about boosting the trade value of the guys here. Think about who we've got moving up through the system. Even if Plouffe can be "ok" in rf, he's not going to stay there long-term with Revere, Benson, Tosoni, Hicks, and others waiting in the wings. Morneau, Willingham, Mauer, and Doumit all could have a future as full-time DH'ers. The Twins have made it clear that they don't see him as an IF starter. At best, he's a backup on the Twins, but other teams could have space for him as a starter. You send him through waivers now, you get nothing. You give him a few months to show some hitting prowess and halfway decent defense, and maybe we can get some value from him in a trade. If Burroughs plays well, he could platoon with Valencia, but I think it more likely that one of the two get traded. Same deal as with Plouffe, if you send him down now you get nothing, later on he or Valencia could garner something decent. Just a thought
  20. Good. Who'd they stick in LF then?
  21. What happened to VodkaDave?
  22. Kepler just turned 19 in Feb. He was still in high school when they signed him three years ago. Give the kid some time, geeze.
  23. I think I'd like to hear a little more detail about what actually happened with the surgery before I call the Twins medical staff liars
  24. Apparently something similar happened to Russ Ortiz back in 2008. The article on the Strib about it implied that the decision was made after surgery had already begun, after they saw the elbow on the inside. I'm assuming Baker consented to the surgery if the doc thought it necesary, otherwise there's gonna be a big 'ol lawsuit
