  1. I've seen several people mention that one of the reasons we should dump Jeff Gray is because he's 30, implying that there is no way he'll improve beyond his career averages, and no way he could be a long term part of the Twins pitching staff. Why? Lots of players play well into their 30's and some into their 40's. And there ARE some guys who do improve considerably after they are 30. Perfect example: R.A. Dickey. He was drafted out of college when he was 22, played in the Rangers organization for 10 years doing nothing special, bounced around a bit, pitched for the Twins in 2009 and was largely written off as not a useful asset....and then in 2010, at the age of 36 he joined the Mets starting rotation and has spent the last few seasons being one of the better starting pitchers in the National League (and arguably better than virtually every Twins starter in that period). Now that is an extreme example, and I don't expect Gray to suddenly jump to the rotation and start striking out 10+ guys a night, but it seems awfully silly to use his age and his past struggles to completely write off the very good work he has done this year and discount any potential future benefit he could have for the club.
  2. It seems like he has been playing just about every day since Valencia got sent down. And he's not getting better. Why would you think a whole season of throwing him to the wolves is suddenly going to make him blossom into a better player than he's ever been? Remember, his minor league stats were for the most part unimpressive
  3. Yeah, I think Erock totally just made that point.
  4. I think at this point, as long as Revere is hitting above the Mendoza line Plouffe is not going to have a spot in the outfield. So basically, we're going to be stuck dealing with his sloppy 3b work 7-8 innings a night, at least until Valencia or Burroughs can earn their way back up to the bigs. At that point, Plouffe is going to become a backup or trade bait. I really would be surprised if he actually improves enough this year to make it worth keeping him around for the future.
  5. Yes, this is very Tounge-In-Cheek. Our bullpen has been quite good considering how many times they've had to come in during the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
  6. After today, 1/3 of his hit are home runs. Normally, that would be an awesome stat, but after going 1 for 4 today, he is now 15 for 94. He actually RAISED his BA to .159. So...what's up with that?
  7. Guess we better immediately get rid of him rid of him right?
  8. Why in the hell would the first guy you cut from the 25 man be Jeff Gray? He has been a pretty solid, dependable arm from the bullpen, and certainly has been a lot more consistent than most of our starters. He's had a few bad innings, but really how many games has he actually cost us? Now compare that to how many games some of our other pitchers have cost us. Personally, I'd be getting rid of Plouffe and trying to trade Swarzak long before I'd start messing with any of our regular relievers
  9. I'd take him but it wouldn't make sense to bring him here while we had Doumit. If Doumit signs somewhere else, give AJ a shot again
  10. I think they just announced the 2013 all-star game, so it'll be awhile before they announce 2014
  11. He's on the 40 man. If he was taken off he would have had to pass through waivers, and there would have been plenty of news on that (and chances are someone would've grabbed him)
  12. I'm going to abstain until I see him face a team for the second time. That will be the real test, same with Diamond
  13. What would our options be if we decided to keep Span and trade some of our OF's who are potentially being blocked by him? I'm sure there are teams out there willing to take a shot at Revere, Benson, Hicks, maybe even our Italian Stallions (Mastroianni and Tosoni). We also seem to have a surplus of young arms in the area of long relief/spot starter that probably won't turn out to be better than #4 or #5 starters. Any options out there for getting anything worth having for Manship, Swarzak, Hicks, Walters, etc? I know we almost certainly aren't going to get A-level big league talent for these guys, but they could get us some guys to fill in at 3b/2b/SS where we are pretty thin right now, or maybe a package to get one half-way decent veteran starter (a 2010 Pavano, rather than a 2012 Marquis).
  14. He's still floating around as a FA, and the Twins need at least one new starter, and that's assuming Walters and Diamond hold up, and either Blackburn or Liriano make it back to the rotation this year. Would he be worth a shot at? Would he be willing to come here?
  15. Let no one say the Player's Union is a weak union. As far as pitching options go, I think it makes the most sense to slide Swarzak to the rotation for now and bring somebody up or claim somebody for relief help. Liriano needs a little more time in the bullpen, and Hendricks could use a couple more turns in AAA. Don't forget, we'll almost certainly need someone to take Blackburn's spot by the time they get home.
  16. I've got no numbers or anything to back this up, but just from watching the game, it seems like 3b is a slightly more dangerous position than 1b. They seem to do a whole lot more diving, quick abrupt direction changes that can be rough on the body, having a lot more hard slides coming at them, etc. I would suspect it wouldn't be so much that Mauer doesn't have the tools to play 3b, as much as he doesn't have the conditioning. It's not hard to imagine Mauer diving for a ball down the line, twisting his body quick and firing it across the diamond, and ending up on the DL for a month or more with an abdominal injury. Both from a performance standpoint and a PR standpoint, the twins are going to take a few errors and a weak bat at 3b over Mauer on the DL any day.
  17. No, they couldn't. If they claim him on waivers he has to go straight to the Majors. If they wanted to send him to AAA they would have to try and pass him through waivers themselves.
  18. Apparently Blackburn said it felt like "a knife sticking in his leg". Based on that description, and the fact that it hurt a little, went away for a few days, and came back.... I would be willing to bet money it's not a leg injury. It sounds like sciatic pain, likely caused by a bulging disc in his lower back. If that's the case, we won't see him pitch again until at least July, if at all the rest of this year. Which means we'll need a long-term replacement. Swarzak and Duensing might do okay as spot starters, but I don't think either of those guys are going to be able to hold down a rotation spot for the next several months. If they think Liriano and Marquis are going to be halfway dependable starters by the end of June, then either of the above guys could fill in for a bit, but if there really is a chance that they'll dump Marquis and/or they don't think Liriano will start again, it's time to get DeVries his chance and start looking outside for some help too.
  19. Usually in cases where they are later "tried as an adult" they are still treated as a minor until a judge rules that they can be charged as an adult. However, Texas is one of 11 states where you are only considered a "juvenile" if you are under the age of 17, so at 17 you are not eligible to any of the protections the law provides for juveniles.
  20. Ok, let's say the Twins finally give up on Plouffey, and either send him to another team or sneak him through waivers this week. You need a 3b starter by May 21st (I think that would be the first day they could bring Valencia back up). What would you do, and why? For the sake of argument, let's assume that no other team is going to be willing to trade with the Twins between now and then, and no one else is going to be sent through waivers by another team between now and the 21st.
  21. Really, all of this would be much easier to deal with if Morneau could come back and play 3-5 games a week at 1b. Let Doumit be our primary DH, where he's going to be most successful.
  22. Does Swarzak have options left? If so, I'd send him down, maybe stretch him out a bit in case they need him to step back in to the rotation. 2nd choice would be Burnett, simply because he has options. Gray and Burton would certainly get claimed, Diamond and Walters have pitched quite well and probably will be given more time to solidify a spot. I think everyone else on the pitching staff has enough MLB experience to be able to refuse being sent down.
  23. So far, the Twins are 3-1 when he's catching. Since he joined the team, they are 1-7 when he's on the bench. He hasn't really hit any worse than we expected, and isn't really hitting any worse than expected. He's got 3 hits and one run over 12 ABs, compared to Plouffe's 4 hits and two runs in 31 AB over his last ten games. When Mourneau comes back, I really think Butera's worth keeping around. It's going to be a bit of a juggle to get Doumit and Mourneau AB's, but honestly I'd much rather have Butera starting and Doumit as a PH option than the other way around. Thoughts?
  24. Ummm...hosts a radio show? Does potato chip commercials? Hawks cherry juice?
