  1. I really think we should chase Grienke hard. Unlike many other Marquee players, he seems like the actual situationhes getting into us more important than getting every dollar possible. Not only would it give our rotation something fantastic to build around, it would also be a great PR move and would sell some tickets. Not only that, but it might actually help us land other FA's. Everyone wants to play for a contender, and adding Grienke to the M&M boys is a clear sign that we want to win soon, and not just sit on our hands until Buxton comes up
  2. I'm gonna guess actually that unless Manship starts, he'll get sent back down. No reason to DFA a guy when we have guys with options we can send down that aren't doing that much better
  3. I know it's never going to happen, but given our fairly consistent success in inter league play and our perennial struggles against the Yankees and other AL powerhouses, how do you think the Twins would fair if we switched leagues? A lot more fights with Brewers fans, but you could also justify converting a guy like Hicks easier if you knew he would actually hit once in a while
  4. Last I checked, Mauer is #3 in votes for Catcher. How many catchers do they carry in the all-star game? I don't think Perkins has been consistent enough to justify a spot, but I wouldn't be surprised if Capps gets the nod.
  5. Valencia = Trade Bait at best. I do think that unless Plouffe improves his defense and can maintain a good average all season long, he is not a long-term answer at 3b. Finding a lefty to share time with him isn't a bad idea, but platooning him with Mauer is just stupid. Plouffe has hit more home runs, but he simply cannot hit and field on the same level as Mauer. Not to mention the fact that you don't pay a guy 23m a year to only play half the time.
  6. Before we fire Deron...how does this stack up against other teams? The vast majority of all drafted players never see even a cup of coffee in the majors. Are we really any worse than the rest of the league? Also, if anyone has time, I'd be curious to do the same kind of look-back on our non-draft signees over the last 15 years, particularly international players, and see how that compares to everybody else
  7. If you consider some platooning situation of Plouffe, Parmelee, Doumit, and Mauer in RF a feasible solution, and you consider Revere to be an everyday starting CF, then we have INCREDIBLE depth for a bench-warming 4th OF who only plays about three innings a week.
  8. I don't know who all is out there for other teams, or what they need, but assuming the stars align right: A healthy Pavano and/or Blackburn and Swarzak for Kevin Youkilis Capps and Valencia for some starting pitching Benson for a AAA or better SS Nishioka for a spanish speaking sports psychologist
  9. Let him stay in the OF, but if he and Butera can both hit 90 on the gun they can be our future #13 and #14 pitchers, for those emergency circumstances.
  10. Cuddyer wasn't an OF in the minors, he didn't become a regular OF until I think his 2nd or third year at the bigs. Also, we may not have star caliber players, but we do have a lot of OF'ers who could fill in and/or platoon. Tosoni, Mastroianni, Thomas, Dinkleman, Plouffe, Parmelee, Carson, and Benson are all capable of playing at least a few games in OF at the bigs. They may not be superstars, but they could keep the spot warm this year, and this offseason there are quite a few potential OF free agents.
  11. I was disappointed they let him go. Extremely so. But I'm a big fan of guys who don't fit the traditional molds in their positions. I'm still fascinated and intrigued by his complete lack of a UCL. He won't ever need to Tommy John surgery, because there is NOTHING THERE to replace or repair. Think about that. He is actually MISSING a key component of his pitching arm.
  12. I think the only way Dozier gets sent down is if Valencia and/or Burroughs is ready to be an everyday 3b. If you take Dozier out of the equation, our starting IF right now is Plouffe-Carroll-Casilla. Do we really want to do that?
  13. I expect we'll see Parmalee in the OF more than we did the last time he was up there, but he'll mostly be a bench guy. Besides just a Left handed bat with some pop, it also allows gardy the freedom to pinch run for Morneau late in a game and not get hurt defensively. Not that Parm is gonna pinch run, but you could pinch run Casilla, and then slide casilla over and put Parm in Plouffe/Carroll's spot, something like that.
  14. I'd be up for giving manship a shot and bringing back a 4th bench guy, but good god don't give Swarzak another start. He has been decent in the bullpen, but TERRIBLE in his two starts
  15. Hey, Buxton is 10-1 as a pitcher, so there's that
  16. I think by the time Buxton makes it to the big leagues (if he ever does), Span will either have been traded, or been moved out of CF. Of course, who knows if Buxton will even be playing CF by that point
  17. It's a long ways away, but from what I've read on Buxton and what I've seen from Revere, I expect Revere will more likely be our CF if/when Buxton gets to The Show
  18. I guarantee you that they had scouts at many of his games this past year, and have extensively studied his stats, mechanics, and history. The Twins organization does do their homework on these guys, and gathers a lot of data on them. Wether or not they draw good conclusions based on that data, well thats another matter. As far as the money goes, how much can they really save, and how much are they even allowed to "overpay" Buxton? I thought the new CBA made slot bonuses a lot stricter about how much you can actually pay draft picks
  19. I think we need to wait and see how Liriano handles his next start and Blackburn does upon his return. If either of those guys crap out again, we may need BOTH of these guys. I actually thought De Vries looked a lot better tonight than his last start, a lot more composed. He may have even gotten a "quality start" if our middle infielders hadn't f*ed up. He probably could do with some more AAA time, and I'd be okay with sending him back down as long as his replacement isn't Swarzak.
  20. Which would you rather have, a slightly stronger arm in RF or someone who can catch? Revere is going to catch a helluva lot more balls than Plouffe, so where is that more valuable? It seems like teams are typically more willing to put their worst defender in LF, and when you have Span, Revere, and Plouffe, Plouffe is far and away the worst one.
  21. I also was happy they keep Diamond around, and I'm glad he's finally showing his worth. I don't expect him to be a Cy Young winner anytime soon, but I think he's a guy we can count on to go out and pitch 6+ innings and give our offense a chance to win. I'll take that.
  22. As a fan and a Target Field employee, it would really REALLY piss me off if they traded away Hammer. If I wanted to watch a bunch of young kids and washed up veterans, I'd start going to Saints games. If you want the team to contend in the future, you need to keep butts in the seats and eyes on the screen. Guys like Willingham help do that. And who would you replace him with? Plouffe should NOT be starting right now, Mastroianni is a 4th OF at best. Benson, Tosoni, and Hicks are all in AA, Dinkleman is hurt, and I don't think anyone wants Clete "strikeout machine" Thomas getting another crack at starting.
  23. On another thread, people were mentioning how the Twins have depth in relievers and they need to bring some guys up from AAA and "see what they have". So here's an interesting thought...on the assumption that the Twins would be willing to trade some of our AAA relievers to fill in other areas where we are weak, is it going to help or hurt their trade value to bring them up? Let's look at Slama. Right now he has a 0.42 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP at Rochester. That looks pretty damn great. Now, if we leave him at AAA, he might keep that line. If we bring him up to the Twins, it's pretty unlikely that he would. If we wanted to trade him, would he be worth more as a guy with half a season of fantastic AAA numbers, or a a few months of fantastic AAA numbers and a few months of mediocre MLB numbers? Another guy to look at would be Valencia. Is he going to be a more valuable trade asset burning up AAA or half-assing it in the Majors? Now of course, it's always tough to predict how guys are actually going to handle the transition to The Show. I don't think ANYONE would've guessed that PJ Walters would the first (and so far only) guy on the staff to throw a complete game. But are there some guys who are worth more to send to another team before we risk them imploding on the big stage?
  24. I'm guessing as soon as Blackburn is ready, De Vries gets sent down, but Diamond and Walters look like they've got the stuff to stick around for quite awhile. Of course, we'll see how things look at about 4pm tomorrow afternoon.
  25. What's a BABIP? Nevermind, I don't care. All I know is, 75% or more of the time, Plouffe doesn't deliver at the plate. He had two clutch opportunities tonight, where a single could have busted up the 0-0 tie far earlier, and he predictably failed both times. Right now, he is taking playing time away from Casilla and Carroll, who are both doing better than him at the plate and are far better fielders. As soon as Valencia comes back, Plouffe either needs to be a bench guy or get dumped. He's not going to be an asset to this team taking away playing time from Revere or Willingham, and Valencia isn't going to come back up to sit on the bench.
