  1. Surprised so many of you are willing to leave Valencia at 3b given his performance so far.
  2. He's only played 2 games at 1b, and so far has done better defensively than the other 1b option Mauer
  3. Add to that the fact that Revere as a pinch runner/defensive replacement is probably worth more than Parmalee as a pinch hitter late in games
  4. If you were in Gardy's shoes, what would your lineup be for tomorrow? What would you do to try and get this team going? And don't say bring up Dozier, that's not happening in the next 24 hours. Personally, my lineup would be: 1. Span, RF 2. Revere, CF 3. Mauer, C 4. Morneau, DH 5. Willingham, LF 6. Parmalee, 1B 7. Hughes, 2b 8. Plouffe, SS 9. Burroughs, 3b Shake things up a little. Remind Valencia, Doumit, Carroll, and Casilla that if they don't perform, there are other guys waiting to take their spot. Remind Span that we have other guys that can man CF if he can't keep Pujols from going first to third. If we had a third catcher, I'd sit Mauer too, but Doumit has looked even worse at the plate
  5. I've heard that many people APPEAR to have better velocity after TJ surgery, but it's often because the deterioration of the ligament affects their pitching and they start to lose velocity before they actually become too injured to pitch. As far as being "better", that can sometimes be the result of simply changing their mechanics as a result of their injury.
  6. At this point, I'd leave Dozier down in AAA at least until we find out if Plouffe/Parmalee/Doumit/Valencia/Burroughs/Hughes are going to hit at all this year. It's not fair to Dozier if he gets brought up into a situation where he'll be expected to be the third or fourth best hitter on the team right out of the gate. Too much pressure, and you might get another Sean Burroughs...hot young prospect who flames out after three disappointing major league seasons and takes years to even get back to the majors level. If we want Dozier to be our SS for many years, don't treat him like a "quick fix".
  7. The Twins "home region" is geographically one of the largest in baseball actually, stretching from eastern wisconsin all the way to eastern montana, and south down to Iowa (not sure where the kansas city/minnesota line is). It's not a very densely populated area though, and the ad rates in Fargo, Des Moines, Rapid City, St Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Grand Forks, Mankato COMBINED is probably half what it is in NYC.
  8. I'm going to guess that at least part of it is a fear that he's going to get hurt again.
  9. $7.75 a cup, only $0.50 more than a Bud. Unfortunately, as an employee at Target Field, I may never get to taste it
  10. Are these the same analysts that picked them to win the division last year?
  11. Big IF here...but IF Nick Punto suddenly blossoms into a fantastic leadoff hitter and becomes a cornerstone of the BoSox Offense and Defense, will the blog-o-sphere start blaming Gardy for letting him go, or will there heads simply explode?
  12. Since someone asked on another thread, here's a few things that I've appreciated about Ben Revere. Blazing speed in a lineup full of slow chuggers. We know Target Field isn't going to be a Home Run park, so it's silly to put all our hopes on power hitters. Highlight reel catches. It's nice to see the twins on the top 10 BEST plays, instead of the worst A willingness to throw himself fully into every play. Remember when he hit the ground on a sliding catch so hard he broke his belt? A toughness and drive to play everyday. This is a kid who BROKE HIS FACE and was back playing in a manner of weeks. So many people whine and complain about how the Twins are all wusses and take a week off for a hangnail and whatnot. This is a kid that should be held up as an example for the rest of team. Does he have a cannon for an arm? No. Is he a power hitter? No. Has he proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he'll never be a great hitter? Absolutely not. He's 24. He hasn't even played a full season at the major league level. You can teach better hitting techniques. You can teach guys to take better routes to flyballs. You can teach guys the "charging catch" move and other tricks to help lessen the impact of a weaker arm. You can't teach speed. You can't teach a guy to throw his whole body into a play, and get up smiling.
  13. For everyone that is ready to fire Gardy and jettison the lineup because of our ugly first series...look at Boston. Right now, the guy leading the team in BA, SLG, RBI, 2nd in OPS and 4th in OBP is.....Nick Punto.
  14. While the players haven't been doing great, I actually think Gardy has made some decent coaching moves so far. After Doumit turned a fly ball into a triple, he didn't start the next game. Valencia had a rough game, and Casilla hasn't been hitting, and they are sitting today. These are the kinds of things that a manager can control. He can't make guys hit better, he can't make guys play better. But he can hold them accountable, and pull them when they are not doing well.
  15. Still don't understand the love affair with Joe Benson. Is it the hair?
  16. I would bet leaving Willingham in LF had less to do with his unwillingness to move, than it was keeping a spot open the they could put Doumit, Plouffe, and Parmalee in. And I personally don't like the idea that it's worth sacrificing defense for a good bat. Even the best batters get hits less than 4 out of every 10 at bats. Even 1 or 2 flyballs that don't get caught could lose a game for us.
  17. I'm guessing same lineup tomorrow, but if it's close towards the end Doumit gets lifted for Revere or Plouffe. Sunday is when we'll see a shakeup, Mauer to 1b, Doumit to Catcher, Plouffe to RF
  18. Leaving the actual stadium and re-entering for any reason is considered a HUGE security risk, regardless of if it's just for a smoke or whatever. Even the smoker's pen was a potential security hazard as it wouldn't be terribly hard for a passerby to slip something to someone that's already been cleared by security. The no re-entry policy is pretty standard at virtually all major sporting and entertainment venues, and is unrelated to any smoking ban. I would guess part of the reason this is being pushed now is a combination of continually mounting public pressure and laws to limit public smoking, as well as the push by MLB to get Tobacco of any kind out of the game. While it didn't outright ban it, the new CBA has specific language aimed at restricting public use of tobacco of any kind by players. And diehardtwinsfan, I don't believe any money from cigarette taxes went to the stadium, I think it's all coming from the general sales tax hike.
  19. I wonder what all the employees at Target Field are gonna do now that they're losing their smoking spot on 7th.
  20. Uh...between Newark, La Guardia, and JFK, there are 19 flights from Rochester between 4:15pm today and 3:08pm tomorrow. Plus his daughter isn't at home, she's still at the hospital.
  21. I'd think Marquis would be willing to go to Rochester, because it is much closer to home. If they send him down by Friday, he could rejoin the team in New York and only miss one start.
  22. It doesn't show it in the picture, but they DID have Surly Furious today. I'm not sure which styles will be available when. I know they have deliberately not put a specific Fulton beer on the menu, since the Fulton brewery may not actually be able to supply enough of any one specific beer to keep up with demand all season long. Not sure if Surly will have the same problem. And the cheese-stuffed meatball is pretty damn great.
  23. But Baltimore sucks!
  24. On the "30 teams in 30 days" special, the MLB network dude said he showed Capps how to throw a splitter "the right way" or something like that
  25. I like that lineup, although I'd probably give Hughes a shot at the 2b job
