  1. I'm gonna guess that initially, they'll try and keep Doumit in the lineup as much as possible, so when he isn't catching, he'll be in RF. When he is catching, I'd look for Parmalee in RF, with either Mauer or Morneau at 1b. It seems like they are leaning towards Plouffe being a super utility bench guy for now. His bat isn't quite strong enough to justify keeping it in the lineup everyday, and his defense is passable, but there isn't any one position he's good enough at to bump anyone else out for a starting slot.
  2. Lots of question marks, but if Burroughs can approach his early career potential, Hughes and Parmalee carry their spring numbers forward, and Revere gets on base a bit more, I think our lineup will be very good, 1-13. As far as the bullpen, I agree that it's success will hinge a lot on what happens with our starters. If Hendricks can start off the season hot and prove he deserves to stay up here, and none of our other starters tank, our reliance on guys like burnett and gray will be significantly reduced, which is probably a good thing
  3. We've got a lot of new guys on the squad this year. Anyone wanna guess what Gardy and the various press will dub them?
  4. I gotta say, as a Twins fan and a father, I'm pretty proud of the fact that they have been so willing to adjust to Marquis's situation and doing their best to give him as much time as he needs. With all the money and hype, it's sometimes too easy to forget what's really important. Best wishes to his daughter, and I hope she gets a chance to come out and see her Dad pitch at Target Field
  5. I'll probably be at the stadium, getting the Roof Deck ready for the home opener
  6. Luke Hughes and Liam Hendricks, prompting awful sportscasters everywhere to refer to them as "The Thunder from Down Under"
  7. Oh, one more. Gardy pulls what's left of his hair out by mid-June
  8. I haven't paid much attention to the NL, but for the AL: AL East: Rays, Blue Jays (WC2), Yankees, Red Socks, Orioles AL Central: Twins, Royals, Tigers, Indians, White Sox AL West: Rangers, Angels (WC1), Mariners, A's Blue Jays ride into the playoffs on a late season surge, coupled with some injury problems with the Yankees. They shock everyone by beating the Angels in the wild card game and the Rangers in the ALDS. The Rays pummel the Twins, and the ALCS sets a new record for number of home runs in a playoff series, but ultimately, the Rays win in 7.
  9. I'm betting we don't see Dozier at the major league level until September. If the Twins are sucking and Carroll and Casilla go down, it makes more sense to bring Nishi or one of the other "AAAA" guys up, rather than start Dozier's service time on a bottom dwelling team. If they are hot and Carroll and Casilla go down, it would make more sense to swing a trade and bring a solid defender like Punto to plug the gap, rather than trust a rookie with no big league experience to hold down such a critical position. Basically, I think it hinges on the idea that a hot young kid at SS isn't going to win us many of games by himself, but an overwhelmed rookie who isn't quite ready for The Show could easily lose us a number of games at SS.
  10. Much improved, but fighting for second place in July. Revere, Span, Liriano and Hughes have a big first half, and Nishioka and Liam Hendriks tear up AAA. Liriano gets traded for a RF veteran, Span gets traded for a power arm prospect. Plouffe hits big, but can't field well enough to start, and is traded with Butera and a AAA pitcher for a young, fast, high-defense SS. Carroll gets hurt, Nishi gets brought up, Hendricks replaces Liriano in the lineup. By August, our regular starting lineup is C-Mauer, 1B- Parmalee/Hughes Platoon, 2B Nishi, SS New Guy, 3B Valencia, RF New Guy, CF Revere, LF Willingham, DH Morneau, bench: Casilla, Doumit, Tosoni, Burroughs.
  11. Ok, here's my understanding of the 40 man roster thing. If you are on the 15-day DL, you still count as being on the 40 man roster. If you are on the 60-day DL, you do not. After releasing Zumaya, the Twins have 38 men on their 40 man roster. Keeping those slots open is important for several reasons right now: #1: I believe the Twins have first crack on ANY player that's sent through waivers, and if they claim someone they have to put him on the 40 man #2: If the Twins grab a free agent or swing a trade for an IF utility guy, they'll need to put him on the 40-man right away #3: There are a lot of guys who we might want up with Twins who aren't currently on the 40-man, including: Dozier, Florimon, Chang, Hollimon, Burroughs, Towles, Dinkelman and Gibson. It's a lot easier to cut Zumaya now, rather than risk trying to pass a guy through waivers later.
  12. As I stated above, you can't move a guy to the 60 until your 40 is full, and they may not want to fill their 40 before opening day
  13. Other than his arm, are they really that concerned about his defense?
  14. Although I'd really like to see the Angels and Rangers fall apart, just out of spite. Who wouldn't want to see an Oakland/Seattle Pennant Race?
  15. I think the Tigers emphasis on hitters who can't play defense (Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrerra, Delmon Young, etc) is going to come back and bite them in the ass.
  16. I think Zumaya signed that contract knowing full well that if he got hurt he wasn't going to get paid 800,000. They wanted to clear the space on the 40 man, but they can NOT move someone to the 60-day list if the 40 man isn't full (which it's not). In addition, it's possible that the whole service time thing comes into play. If he's released, he doesn' accumulate service time, but if he's on the 60 day he does. If he hasn't hit the 5 year mark for service time yet, it might make it easier for him to get teams to sign him if/when he tries to comeback. In addition, it's possible he asked the Twins to release him. Not being bound by the contract may allow him more freedom in his rehab/surgery options and timetable.
  17. I still think that if they can get Revere on base more, most likely by getting him to focus on beating out ground ball hits rather than trying to hit for power, our best OF right now is Revere in CF and Span in RF. The first time I saw Revere hit, he hit a ground ball to the 1b and beat it out for a single. That's exciting baseball, and that's something that not many guys can do. He needs some Willie Mays-Hays batting lessons, and he can be a very dangerous weapon
  18. I love how people are so ready to jump all over Ben Revere's offensive stats. Has everyone forgotten he hasn't even played a full year of Major League Ball? We've got a pretty small sample size of anything he's done above the AA level
  19. If Parmalee gets significant time in RF, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hughes get some starts at 1b too
  20. So Seth, assuming Hughes is our IF bench guy, Revere is our 4th OF, and Plouffe/Parmalee/Doumit/Morneau/Mauer fill C, 1b, RF, DH and one bench spot... who do you put as our 4th bench guy if not a 3rd catcher?
  21. I'm gonna guess opening day lineup has Morneau DH, Parmalee at 1b, Doumit in RF, with Revere, Hughes, Butera and Plouffe on the bench. I'm gonna guess the initial plan would be: 1b: 60% starts to Parmalee, 20% to Morneau, 10% to Doumit, 10% to Mauer RF: 20% to Parmalee, 40% to Doumit, 20% to Plouffe, 10% to Span (with Revere in Center), 10% to Mauer C: 80% to Mauer, 10% to Doumit, 10% to Butera DH: 30% Doumit, 60% Morneau, 5% Plouffe, 5% Parmalee Just my opinion.
  22. It seems like it would actually be a pretty impressive feat of flexibility, agility, and balance to actually poop in someones mailbox
  23. Wait...did Herb Carneal and Calvin Griffith play in Twins games? On the blog someone said Jim Rantz is the only one who didn't...that can't be right
  24. " For instance, Miguel Sano signed as a SS but he's now huge and likely profiles better at 3B, so they moved him" That's exactly what I don't fully understand. What about his body type/skills makes him profile better at 3B than SS?
  25. And I'm not sure, but I'll bet people wore Blylevin and Killebrew's numbers before they retired them.
