  1. It seems like it's not uncommon that players get drafted at one position, and the get moved to another position. Other than just being terrible at a position, what leads coaches and managers to try and convert players to other positions? What do they look for at each position when working with young players?
  2. Gotta point out too...the A's didn't exactly turn into a powerhouse dynasty or anything.
  3. Geeze, Terry Doyle has only pitched in two games, and I think all the hits and runs he's given up came in the second game. People have bad days, give the kid a chance
  4. Yeah, Benson is only a couple months older than Revere, he just started in the minors a year before he did. I still don't get though, why he's too talented to give up on, and people have already given up on Revere. If nothing else, Revere is a guy who BROKE HIS FACE and was back playing in a manner of weeks. Bloggers have constantly been bitching that we need more guys who won't take half the season off because of a stubbed toe. Revere throws his whole body into the game, and fights like hell to get back when he's hurt. Plus, as a fan, it's gonna be a helluva lot more exciting to see Revere diving for balls and stealing bases than seeing Plouffe try to get more extra base hits than he gives up in the field.
  5. Ron Mahay is still pitching? Is he the last "scab" left still playing? And where did Repko end up?
  6. Unless the Twins paid 100% of a stadium, they aren't going to be moving a minor league team to Minnesota anytime soon. The environment is waaay too toxic right now to ask for any level of gov't help for ANOTHER stadium. If/When the Twins do move a minor league team closer, I actually think it would make more sense to make a deal with Sioux Falls or Fargo/Moorhead than with the Saints. They'd reach a lot of Twins fans that can't afford to get all the way to Minneapolis often, would be far enough away to not have to fight Target Field for patrons, but close enough that you could road trip out there to see the hot new prospects.
  7. My conclusion is, that is a ridiculously tiny sample size and means nothing. We need at least a week or two more before you can really start drawing clear conclusions.
  8. The last three years his OPS was higher, but he also played less than Revere, some of those plate appearances were at a lower level, and I don't think you can compare last year at all, when most of Revere's season was in the Majors and most of Benson's were in AA. For 2007 and 2008, when Benson was in Beliot and Revere was in Beloit and Gulf Coast, Revere actually had much higher numbers. Benson also has one more year as a pro player than Revere. And while Benson has better SLG and OPB, his average has consistently been lower than Revere's, and his strikeouts have been MUCH higher. In 2010, Benson has 136 K's, and Revere had 137 his entire 5 years in the minors. Granted, I haven't actually seen Benson play much, but based on stats alone, they seem fairly comparable. Benson is gonna get more extra base hits, but he's also gonna strike out more. Revere is gonna end up on 1st base most of the time, but he'll steal his way around the diamond a lot more. I guess it really depends on what you see as more valuable. Personally, I'd love to see them both eventually in the starting lineup. Get Revere to take a few more walks, get Benson to strike out a bit less, and they'd compliment each other well. Revere gets to 1st, steals his way to 2nd, Benson doubles him in. We could see that A LOT.
  9. Just out of curiosity, what does Joe Benson have over Ben Revere (other than more hair)?
  10. Does Marquis always throw this wild?
  11. Ideally, Capps will be a totally sufficient closer because he won't need to come in and save games very often with all our 6-10 run leads. That could happen, right?
  12. I'm a big Revere fan, but assuming Span is back to his prime playing condition (which in my mind is still a HUGE "if"), I'm warming to the idea of Revere platooning with Plouffe in LF, at least to start. Then Plouffe also gets a little more playing time than if he was just on the bench, and it's not so scary to have span take a day off and have a Plouffe-Revere-Willingham OF. On the days Plouffe starts, Rever becomes a dangerous weapon on the bench. Definitely would make a team think twice about intentionally walking somebody late in a game when they could be subbed out for Revere.
  13. It would all be a helluva lot easier to deal with for us consumers if they'd just let us pay for ONLY the channels we wanted.
  14. Personally, I think the different surfaces of the wall in RF, the overhang, and the fact that it is on the south side of the stadium (and thus more likely to be in shadow) makes it the most difficult part of the OF at Target field to play. That's why I'd advocate that Span, who has spent more time at Target Field than Plouffe, Wilingham, and Revere combined, would be the best choice, at least to start. Willingham will already be forced to adjust to a new team, a totally new ballpark to hit in, and a significantly different climate (which can significantly impact how a ball reacts in flight). Do you really want him to also deal with all the quirks of Target Field's RF?
  15. Right now, Revere is most valuable standing on 2nd base. :-) Since we signed Willingham, I've thought it would be best to keep him in LF and put Span in RF. With Revere's range, he could cover a fair amount of LF to help out Willingham, and you wouldn't be forcing a guy to not just adjust to the other side of the OF, but also deal with the goofy-ass overhang. Span has the most experience at Target Field, let's put him in the trickiest spot. As far as the plate goes, that's where we gotta remember that Revere is only 23. He's young enough that he still could develop a decent amount of power and an excellent eye at the plate. Give him a little time in a low pressure slot at the bottom of the order, and I think we'll see some great things from this young man. Can someone tell Mr Carew to teach Revere how to steal home too? That'd be fun to watch.
  16. Gotta point out....ideally anyone in the bullpen is going to spend less time on the field than anyone else on the team. If the offense is scoring runs, the defense is stopping runs, and the Starters are getting quality starts we won't see more than 2-3 innings of our relief corps per game. That's only 40 innings per pitcher in a 12 man bullpen. Now I know that this is an ideal situation, and if we actually had a quality start every game, this would be the greatest team in baseball history. My point is that investing in your starting pitchers and position players tends to have a FAR greater impact on our overall season than our relief corps. If we have to have a reliever come in in the 4th inning and it's 6-0 and all our position players have holes in their bats and gloves, no reliever is going to turn that game around
  17. As long as Hughes is healthy and/or Burroughs is ready to backup 1b, I don't think we need a 3rd catcher. If Mauer or Doumit have to play 1b more than once a week, I'd rather see Butera up here than Parmalee, at least at first. Yes, Butera can't hit worth a damn, but we know he can catch. Parmelee has only played 20 games at the Major League level and NONE at AAA. I think he would benefit a lot more from starting in Rochester instead of rushing him straight to the Bigs.
  18. Gotta point out too, it sounds like they told Hardy to hit line drives the other way in his first BP with the Twins, and he just decided to stick with that all year long. It seems to me that it's actually a smart move in spring training BP to ask guys to try doing things different, see if helps them. That's the time when you try to stretch yourself as a player a bit, practice those things you aren't the best at. If one coach asks you to try a different hitting approach in your first BP ever with the team, and you as a player decide that's how you need to hit all year long, than at least part of the responsibility is on you.
  19. My guess for the line up: Opening Day: C: Mauer 1B: Doumit 2B: Casilla SS: Carroll 3B: Valencia LF: Revere CF: Span RF: Willingham DH: Morneau Bench: Nishioka, Hughes, Plouffe, Tosoni Rotation (in no particular order): Baker, Pavano, Blackburn, Liriano, Marquis Bullpen: Swarzak, Duensing, Doyle, Zumaya, Perkins, Capps, Oliveros.
  20. I would think that if Morneau is limited in the field, that would actually give Hughes even MORE of a "lock" over butera, plouffe, or Nishi. He did play 36 games at 1b, compared to 37 at 2b and 13 at 3b. He only had one error at first, and has better sabermetric fielding stats at 1b than at 2b or 3b. At least, I think so. I can't promise I'm not reading the numbers wrong.
  21. I don't think it's an issue of race at all. We've hung on to Casilla longer than alot of people think we should of. Jose Morales wasn't a great defensive catcher or much of a bat, Wilson Ramos was still pretty raw behind the plate and more valuable as a trading chip, O-Hud and O-Cab were on the tail end of their careers and essentially "replacement parts". Don't forget we also only gave JJ Hardy a year. And it's hard to argue that the twins should have been investing heavily in Catcher over the last decade when their two starting catchers are likely both Future All-Stars. Last year was really the first awful year for Mauer, and I don't think anyone would have predicted it to be quite that bad
  22. Between Casilla, Revere, and Span there is the potential for a LOT of singles stretched into doubles and triples if they hit it in the right spots, not to mention a lot of stolen bases. I will be disappointed if I don't see at least one inside the park homer from one of those guys. Now Revere just needs some Willy Mays-Hays batting lessons, Casilla needs to make sure is head is screwed on right, and Span needs his head clear and healthy.
  23. Catchers get hurt all the time, just not from collisions. These days, how many guys are actually willing to go full-body collision into a catcher? Wether the catcher is properly positioned or not, the runner has a good chance of getting hurt too, especially when it's a big guy like Mauer.
  24. I'm guessing a full season of a healthy Revere and Span is gonna earn us an extra 15-20 runs from them stealing their way into scoring position. Willingham's style of hitting will probably get us a few more runs than we got from Kubel or Cuddy.
  25. On paper, it looks like the Tigers are the team to beat, but on paper it looked like the 2011 race would be between the Twins and White Sox. So who really knows?
