The Royals have six players hitting better than Joe Mauer including five players batting .300 or better. The Twins are officially Mount Crushmore no more.

That is one thing I have disliked about Gardy and the Twins; players come through the organization at one position, but the Twins try to have them learn a new position at AAA or the major league level. Of course, the players faulter.

An "Ace" can consistantly shut down even a great line-up. Hughes is not an "Ace" in that regard, but he is good enough pitcher to keep a decent team in the game. No heroics needed.

Actually, they did not have the name when the franchise was awarded. The NHL awarded the team in 1997, but the team name was not announced from the finalists until 1998. Therefore, it is the only team name for the franchise, but it was not the team name "since the franchise was awarded".

I would not want to live in Arizona or Southern California twenty years from now. No water, and many 110F Summer days. No thanks.

Punt on 2015? Yes, ... if it helps down the road. Getting these young players full time at bats, full games pitching, and field work is a priority. Keeping them from getting major league time earned toward free agency is a secondary factor.

I did not like the Hunter signing at all. His best years are behind him offensively, and his defense is a liability. $10 Million for that? This is for a player who willingly left the Twins for greener fields? The Twins need some bats, but they need up and coming players rather than guys that used to be somebody on the Twins roster. $10 million could have brought in a better player.

This roster is a joke, but do we want the youngsters up just to fill the stands? We do not want early free agency for players that do make it or players that are not ready being set back by bringing them up too soon. The combination would be a killer.

The results are pretty much what I expected from this group. Well, not 11-0, but many 5-2 games. The Twins have weak bats, suspect fielding, and poor pitching. This is what we have to put up with the Twins until the youngsters are ready. I just wish the Twins had not signed some of the players they did to contracts that they will be stuck with for years. I thought the 1970s and early 1980s where bad, but this go around is so bad, I do not even care to watch the team play. So much for the new stadium making the Twins contenders.

When does the HHH Metrodome open? I like the Met, but this team is not very good. I hear the Twins have some good minor league players.

I understand your point, but I find blanket statements like that as hard to read as any negativity. Although I was not on this website at the time, I was vocal that the contract given to Mauer was not a good one for the Twins. I did not mind a long term contract, but the size of the contract and the guaranteed money was too much for a player not yet on the open market who had only shown power for one season. I was vocal about releasing David Ortiz and trading Rod Carew years ago as well. Both are low points in Twins history. I was upset about Ortiz on day one, but that front office mistake was worse in hindsight. Carew wanted out because the Twins were cheap, and Griffith showed just how cheap he was by trading Carew instead of trying to trade for better players around him. I would have liked the Twins to play hardball with Johan Santana to keep him with the Twins rather than trade him to the Mets for failed players. The Twins were contenders, and one more year of Santana could have meant another playoff run - even if just for one season. The Twins had some leverage with that last season under contract. They could have said, "Play out this year, and lose potential money, or sign an extention, and get paid more now and later." Allowing the Mets to negotiate with Santana was a mistake. It would have been a gamble, but what isn't in baseball? My point is that some people had differing opinions along the way. We did not agree to anything 99%, and that makes for a better fan base and a better board. It also makes some people sound negative while others sound optimistic. As long as posters stick to facts and make logical arguments, there should be room for discussion. Otherwise, we are all just blowing wind, and that is almost as bad as blowing hot air.

If Mauer was a good range centerfielder that could rack up 30 stolen bases as a leadoff hitter, he may be worth 3/4 of his paycheck with a batting title. Otherwise, ... no. Mauer is paid to bat cleanup, and he only did that well enough to earn the big bucks in his contract year. I say it now, as I said it then, the Twins were fools to offer that contract at that time. As it is, Joe is a number two or three hitter in the lineup. If it wasn't for his contract and his position, that would not be bad. The problem is that his contract is ginormous, and his position is often reserved for a power hitting RBI bat.

This season was lost already. It was before Santana was suspended. Terry Ryan should not bring up the young players until they are ready. To do so would not only hamper their development, it would also give them more time at the major league level and allow them to become UFA more quickly. Is that what fans really want? Neither Santana nor Nolasco were worth the contracts they were given. The Twins needed an ace and a second starter, and they signed veteran third starters to second starter money. It was a waste of money to begin with, and now it looks even worse.

The Twins are now stuck with his "doped" contract. The front office is doing a pretty poor job with these moster deals lately.
