  1. I think I was joining in on the joke. Should have made that more clear. My bad.
  2. But hey, Hunter was aggressive with his swinging. Created an out, also didn't score anyone, and didn't extend an inning, but aggressive. :-)
  3. Might have done something different if he was given more than one pitch that deserved to be swung at. Hey, who has the first RBI of the season for the Twins and the 1st run scored? :-)
  4. So, if he if wasn't ready, why did Ryan recommend him?
  5. I forgot the 'man' part of that c'mon phrase. 'C'mon Maaan. ' My bad :-) So Smith wasn't Ryan's long time assistant? He wasn't the assistant GM, for like practically all of Ryan's first tenure as GM (like promoted to assistant GM two days after Ryan took over)? I can't see how he didn't report to Ryan. That seems odd. Also seems odd that enough grooming couldn't occur in 13 years and that Ryan would have suggested him if he didn't think Smith was ready.
  6. Nolasco's spot in the rotation will arrive quickly, so they had little choice but to act quickly. But yeah, true, on the rest of that.
  7. True, but when an organization trusts a guy like that Twins do Ryan, and Ryan has Smith as his right hand man/assistant GM, his recommendation along with a STRONG organizational tendency to promote from within, lends itself to believe that it was pretty much a situation where they picked the guy Ryan was grooming for the job. So yes, ownership had the final say, but really. C'mon. :-)
  8. I love this thread, PeanutsFromHeaven rocks! I would like to add that some people who love the numbers also can enjoy the game from the story-telling, player narrative view as well. As long as said narrative is even close to reality. To me, the game is majestic, magical, and something I will love forever. It was my first true love. If it was just numbers for me, I wouldn't watch it. But my passion for the game MAKES me want to dig deeper to have a better understanding of the game. It doesn't ruin the game for me, it enhances it.
  9. The Hunter situation was cause because Ryan didn't get him signed prior to the 2007 season. Smith had that doozy dropped in his lap compounded by the trade of Castillo that ticked off Hunter and Santana (and likely others) which likely didn't help negotiations with either player. While the Santana trade was bungled no doubt, it could have been avoided by having a longer extension in the first place or by Ryan himself trading him. I don't blame either on Smith. And Smith's failures were likely due to him not being really right for the job, even though he was hand-picked him to be the GM by Ryan himself.
  10. Yeah, I think 2016 is a pipe dream. In order for us to be really good in 2016 in the way you've detailed it, we need to expect all of them (you mentioned SIX prospects, FIVE of which haven't even seen the majors yet) to adjust very quickly and perform very well right away. Your post seems to be discarding the high failure rate for prospects and how, for most players, it takes a year or two to get adjusted and start being the players they can be. If even half of these six guys you mentioned end up having good careers it'd be amazing. It'd be miraculous if more ended up having good careers AND they all performed really well in their first full year.
  11. We have the potential to be a really good team in 2016-2021 window? I think 2016 is pretty unrealistic at this point, don't you? Especially considering the type of season we are likely to have this year? I think it's unrealistic that the light is just going to turn on this team as these players are just starting their adjustment to the majors. This idea that we should just keep delaying our guys until we are going to be real good confounds me because we need these news guys in order to, hopefully, be really good.
  12. 'The Tigers set a modern-day American League record Thursday by extending their season-starting shutout streak to 24 innings before Minnesota scored in a 7-1 win for Detroit. After blanking new Twins manager Paul Molitor's team in the first two games of the season -- started by David Price and Anibal Sanchez -- Shane Greene shut out Minnesota for the first six innings to break the record held by the 1947 Chicago White Sox. According to STATS, the longest such streak in the majors since 1912 is 32 innings by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.' http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12657487/detroit-tigers-set-al-record-shutout-streak-24-innings And every box score I've looked at this morning still says our only run scored this season was unearned.

  14. We have scored the least amount of runs and given up the most runs.
  15. I'm reading the box scores on ESPN and MLB.com. Both say Greene wasn't charged an earned run.
  16. Assuming that doesn't continue even when the youngsters are ready. Failure rate of prospects is pretty high and I won't assume a change in one of those categories, much less all three, until these youngsters prove they can do it at the major league level.
  17. took me about 16 years to reach 3rd base....
  18. We're getting used to setting new records in futility. I BELIEVE 4 years of at least 92 losses is a new franchise record too.
  19. Kind of like the 4th inning yesterday? Good thing OF defense isn't really that important. :-)
  20. Schaefer looks lost on defense.
  21. Look at the bright side, by the time they reach FA for the first time they'll just be going into their decline years.
  22. So nothing to do with development or poor evaluation of other teams' player for trading? There are teams that seem to get quality players past the first 19 picks of round one. Cards have been drafting late for quite some time too. and May/Meyer? What is wrong with targeting high school players? Edit: I re-read this and it sounds snarky. Wrote it fairly quickly amongst doing other things. Wasn't meant to be snarky.
