    'Initially, the home plate umpire must determine if a swing was checked or not checked. If he indicates that it was checked, an appeal can be made by the catcher or his manager, and the home plate umpire CAN then make a request to either the 1st or 3rd base umpire to make the call as to whether or not the swing was indeed checked.' I don't see anything about the batter being able to appeal. I also don't see where it HAS to be granted. Anyone have something else from the rules?

    'No excuse for Hunter, but Joe West has built up a lot of bad will among players and managers over the years, and frankly, is an embarrassment to baseball.' I agree with this. Unfortunately, regardless of the bad call, he did exactly what everyone says they want him to do when confronted by a player. He walked away and didn't get right back in the player's face.

    I am NOT defending the call. I would have appealed to 1B if I was the home plate umpire, for sure. But just because a player doesn't like a call doesn't mean he can should be allowed to go off on an umpire taking personal shots.

    It MAY have affected the outcome. That's assuming Hunter does something at the plate as well as others.

    If the rules require an appeal to 1B umpire, maybe. But I don't think they do. As far as I know, only the defense can ask for an appeal and it doesn't need to be granted. Could be wrong. Does someone have the rule handy?

    umpires are reviewed all the time. he's been fined before. this time, though, he only made an arguably bad call. he didn't do his normal routine of getting in the player's face, which is something new for him. he showed restraint.

    You think it's okay for a player to go off on an umpire like that and not get fined? Should Joe West have checked with the 1B umpire? Sure. Does West need to be better? Sure. But that doesn't excuse Hunter's rant after the game, taking personal shots at the umpire. This is a grown man and he's supposed to be a professional. He should be fined, as should any player who does that.

    I get your point, but I'm trying to point out that a post you chose to use as an example as negative wasn't at all negative. Maybe that's the case more than you think.

I thought we weren't supposed to label people on this site lest it be considered flame-baiting or something like that. Is that not true anymore? Isn't that rule in place to help avoid conflict between groups of people in order to facilitate civil debate? Yet here's a whole thread dedicated to slamming the actions of 'negative nellies'. Do you think that a thread like this will help or hurt the overall health of this site in regards to conflict between supposedly two different factions? Do you think this thread being allowed to exist will help or hurt the perception that there is bias in moderating? For example, would a thread bemoaning the continuous defending of the FO by the same people over and over be allowed? And If the term negative nellies is allowed here, what kind of label is allowed for people who always defend the FO? Problem is, after 4 years of really bad baseball and a likely 5th on the horizon, one would/should expect more negative than positive. If there was so much positive to talk about, we wouldn't be losing 90 games a season for the last 4 years. It's reality.

    Did you read that whole post? I wasn't saying it was laughable to believe he could. My point was that there are so many people who slam Mauer continuously, including the 'experts' on tv, I was seriously wondering if they laughed when Dowd suggested that. I said I'm glad to see some predicting a good season for him. That's what I've been doing all over this site. I am one of the biggest Mauer supporters on this site in terms of his ability. In fact, I may be the biggest supporter and the most optimistic about him. I am always defending him and I have been predicting nothing but good things from him this year. Yes, I doubt he wins the batting title, but that hardly means I'm expecting his season to be bad.

The comment was about players being allowed to walk as opposed to being traded, not whether or not it was okay to let it happen. Cuddyer and Kubel both fit the bill 'can you name one guy we've traded prior to hitting free agency that even 15% of the fan base was clamoring to keep?' I haven't done polling data from every Twins fan on even one player traded that fits that criteria much less all. Don't have that kind of money. I know a lot of fans I know didn't like Hardy being traded. Or Span. Or are you talking about right before they hit FA because if that's the case, how many are there in recent history that fits that exact situation? I was fine with Liriano being gone. Morny is one of my favorite Twins ever and one of my favorite players in the game. It hurt when he left but it was understandable at the time. Glad to see him doing well again. I don;t know anyone at all who thought it would have been a good idea to trade him three years earlier though.

    I might be misreading some posts so I'm curious. Are there people taking Santana's side on this and/or rationalizing/minimizing his actions? If he needed it for medical reasons it's really simple. take the prescription to MLB. Let them know about it. Then it's all good.

    I hear ya, but full disclosure: Royals starters had the third most IP in the AL last season. Guess which team in the AL had the least amount of rotation IP? :-)
