  1. 'The first time through the order, opposing batters put up a .704 OPS against starting pitchers, but that jumps to .738 the second time through and .776 the third time through. Most of the gap in starter/reliever performance comes from the fact that starting pitchers have to face hitters several times per game. Even with the fact that starters have to pace themselves for longer outings and have to face line-ups built to counteract their own platoon splits, the gap between OPS versus starters (.704) on the first match-up and OPS versus relievers on the first match-up (.691) is only 13 points. This data suggest that a significant part of the advantage of being a reliever is the one-and-done nature of the match-ups.' Notice how starting pitchers get hit harder every turn through a lineup? To ask a guy to go into the 8th inning in a tie game and into his 4th turn in the lineup is a recipe for disaster. Especially if that pitcher isn't an elite type pitcher.
  2. who picks which players get put on the final vote ballot?
  3. or ANY situation. ONE appearance since he was moved to the pen
  4. May has pitched once since his demotion 9 days ago. I can't imagine this is ideal or good use of a guy who should have never lost his spot in the rotation. 'Hey, let's move him to the pen because the pen needs help and he's a strikeout guy and perfect for it.' Then use him once in a week and a half...
  5. Putting Pelfrey out there in the 8th was something Gardy would do.
  6. Pelfrey shouldn't have been brought out for the 8th inning. That was a mistake.
  7. I've been on the Dozier bandwagon since well before he hit the majors.
  8. It seemed to me the poster I was replying to was talking about Santana. If it was Rosario, I take it back. His defense has seemed fine.
  9. that's sad if that's true.
  10. Last year Suzuki had the most PAs he's had since 2011 and he only had like 10 or so more in 2011.Twins started him at catcher 115 times last year which is the most he had started since 2011. So why are we talking about how his numbers were okay because he got rested more by the Twins last year? He hasn't started more than 127 games at catcher this decade. He's on pace for 127. Not sure that qualifies as wearing a catcher out. Or does it?
  11. I've been driving a car for 30 years and have NEVER had a vehicle to vehicle accident. I had a couple incidents with ice and very small ditches along with some encounters with deer, but never a car to car accident.
  12. Torii Hunter. He has taught the whole team how to win!
  13. Sure that wasn't Springer? Nope, you are right. For some reason I thought it was Springer. Odd Houston did that with Singleton since he had two failed drug tests in the minors.
  14. I heard Hunter took him under his wing a couple months back so, if he has become a strikeout pitcher, all the credit goes to Hunter. :-)
  15. Twins will never put him back at catcher. They aren't going to put him back at a spot that, more than any other position, puts a player in danger for a concussion after he's already had one that put him on the shelf for so long and the effects lingered even longer. Yes, one can get one batting, sliding and getting hit on the head with a knee, etc. But the catcher position makes the possibility even higher and they just aren't going to take a chance with him. And that is a very smart decision.
  16. look at that young man run!
  17. I belief Schoenfield as well along with Dave Cameron
  18. Our welcome what? :-)
  19. Mauer: 3 PA, 3 times on base, 3 times scored.
  20. For one thing, Mazzone said he "never covered my mouth -- not one time" when he talked to Maddux, or anyone else on that awesome Braves staff. For another, he said, Maddux was so dominating, he practically eliminated the need to hold mound conferences. "One time," Mazzone said with a laugh, "he said to me, 'Come on out and visit me. I haven't seen you [on the mound] in a couple of months.' He said, 'You know, Leo, it gets kind of lonely out there. So why don't you come out and visit me in the sixth inning.' "So sure enough, he's shutting out the Mets, and he looks in the dugout with one out in the sixth. And Bobby [Cox] says to me, 'Mad Dog is looking for you. Go out there and make sure he's all right.' So I go out there and he says, 'I'm glad you came out. My catcher doesn't speak English. I'm tired of talking to Chipper. So it was nice of you to come out here. You got anything you need to ask me?' And I said, 'Yeah, you planning on going seven tonight or all nine?'"
  21. we had two deserving players.
  22. Iglesias is also batting .323 with an OBP in the .380s with the best wRC+ of any shortstop in the AL and tied for 2nd in WAR for shortstops in the AL. (though none of them are doing that well in that department, period with only one over 2.0.). He hasn't been all glove.
  23. Than GOD for Torii Hunter.
  24. maybe he read TD and took all the hitting advice from the wise posters :-)
  25. I just hope Sano proves he can actually play adequate D at 3B before we're dumb enough to trade Plouffe. Not that defense counts in the corner OF or the corner IF spots...hardly matters in the grand scheme of things.
