  1. And offenses across the league have been in a steady decline (in part due to the ever expanding called strike zone). Even if his numbers this year were exactly the same as 2012, his numbers would be more impressive this year than in 2012. And BTW, when comparing 2012 and 2015, his 2015 BA is 25 points higher, his OBP is 18 points higher, and his slg% is and his slg% is 11 points higher. Almost a 30 point increase in overall OPS. That's not stagnation. That's a good improvement as offensive production across the league is declining. Plouffe's wRC+ in 2012 was 105, this year it's 118. Quite an improvement.
  2. He didn't add a two seamer (FT)this year, he threw it 159 times last year and it was very ineffective. Now he's throwing it more, still not effective, though his regular fastball is worse this year maybe because he's lost almost 2 MPH on it. His cutter this year has a BAA of .202. Even better than last year.
  3. I assumed you meant cutter because he only used it 7 times in 2013 and then 509 times last year (the 2nd most of any pitch). It was also his most effective pitch. I'm glad the info/links helped though. Seems he's throwing his two seamer more this year and it's hurting him.
  4. Are you sure you mean his curveball and not his cutter? He didn't use his curveball much last year (from over 200 in 2013 to 70 last year) and had a BAA of.400. Seems he's abandoned the curveball . http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.aspx?playerid=7450&position=P http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitch-type-abbreviations-classifications/
  5. Sorry, you said AL ranking, I looked at his rankings among all 3Bs. He's 5th in the AL in DRS and UZR too. Matches where that list ranks him among AL 3B. What is weird is seeing Beltre lower on that list when Beltre is above him in UZR (3rd) and DRS (2nd). I look forward to looking into the stat more. Thanks again.
  6. Since he's 7th in DRS and 8th in UZR for MLB 3bs, the runs effectively defended stat must be pushing his numbers up. I haven't looked into that too much. Gonna have to dive into that. Nice find, Ash!
  7. Pujols just got called out on strike 3 fastball. The ball was barely above the ankle.
  8. Ash, he ranks 18th in OBP against. Guess who ranks last with a whopping .360 OBP against?
  9. His BAA puts him at 41 out of 49 qualifying AL starting pitchers. One wonder how long he can continue to keep up the current ERA streak mentioned by the OP. Every one of the pitchers that has a worse BAA has an ERA of 4.43 or higher, except one. Pelfrey. So the same question applies to him.
  10. he's not walking people. Batters are too busy getting hits off him to walk. That was meant as a joke, he has a low BABIP. I wonder how sustainable that is when he doesn't miss bats?
  11. yeah, it's hard to look at the fact he has allowed more hits than anyone in the league. makes one wonder how long it will be before it hurts. it certainly doesn't click with the idea of getting guys out other ways besides Ks is equally good. Still leads the league in hits allowed means getting guys out a lower rate than most.
  12. But here is the origin on the modern day pitcher win. In there are plenty of quotes talking about whether or not they should be included. Conversations that took place a long time ago. http://sabr.org/research/origin-modern-pitching-win BTW, Mike, thanks for the original article. Great read
  13. It was on MLB Now with Brian Kenny. Not sure how I'd find it.It wasn't a long discussion or anything like a whole segment.
  14. When I first saw the title, I thought it was to expound on what I heard a couple days ago on MLB Network. Seems way, way back when they powers to be were leery of using pitcher wins and RBI at all due to them being so dependent on many others doing the job that gave credit to one guy. Apparently they came close to not using them at all in box scores. In the end, they decided it was just easier to use them.
  15. Here's I thought they called it the juice box because it's Minute Maid park and Minute Maid makes juice :-) Left Field is short, but RF is the more or less the same as ours and CF is 436 along with LF-Center and RF-Center areas being pretty deep. And he's had success other places. We'll see. The splits this year are mildly worrisome.
  16. Has Minute Maid park been a traditionally heavily hitter friendly park? This year maybe, but it's not like Texas or Coors or Philly, right? Or am I wrong on that?
  17. doesn't 0% equal chance equal 0% chance? :-)
  18. I agree with the first part, for sure. As for the 2nd part, he's had 5 appearances and a grand total of 7 innings in relief. His numbers are greatly affected by one game in which he gave up three runs in a game that ended up a 14-1 blowout. Definition of judging player by small sample size. Having said that, not all pitchers do well out of the pen.
  19. Does it matter that prior to 2015, Santana was worth 18M or more in three of the previous four seasons? Most probably don't think it does and maybe it doesn't. Point really is this: There is a reason no one else signed him. No one was desperate enough to overpay him. That hasn't changed after getting nabbed with a PED suspension and him not being able to pitch in the post season. Certainly no contending time would trade for him during this season.
  20. Short answer: They are wasting his talents. They are barely utilizing him in his new role. They are making our rotation worse and not making our bullpen any better (because, they rarely use him and never use him in tough spots).
  21. and the only way to acquire players is by signing FA. Got it. Moving on.
  22. Again, those were the options the GM gave us. You don't blame the GM for the options he had when he, at least more than anyone else at his level or below, is responsible for the options available? Anyway, this really can't turn into a good signing/bad signing thread again because I made a bad sarcastic joke. I like your idea moving forward. ostly at the expense of Hunter's playing time.
  23. Fact is he was signed. But instead of this turning into a thread solely about people slamming a signing and others defending it (because I told an apparently not so funny joke and the defenders rose to Ryan's side), let's get back on point. This lineup is obviously worse without Sano and this team is likely better off, now and in the future, to be playing Arcia more. Mostly at the expense of Hunter's playing time.
  24. No, I was including Hunter as one of the sad options. The options didn't have to be Robinson, Escobar or Hunter. None of those had to be an OF option for us. And, BTW,nothing screams let's have a backup plan for a 24 year old player who has had some injuries like signing a guy about to turn 40. I doubt that's why he was signed. He wasn't signed to backup anyone
  25. Those the only options a GM could have come up with? If so, that's so sad.
