  1. 'I do think Ryan makes the mistake of getting good value and then seeing it as a skill change rather than variation. Did he really believe that the Twins had done something to shift Doumit's and Suzuki's skill level?' How about signing Pelfrey and, even worse, re-signing Pelfrey. He didn't even have some good parts to look at like he did with Suzuki when he gave Pelfrey the extension. Has Ryan ever sold high on a player?
  2. handpicking Smith to be his successor was a pretty questionable call too.
  3. he was praised hard for that trade and was still being so up until early this season. People saying how he fleeced the Nats (such a high prospect for such an supposedly average and declining CF), etc. And then still praising the thought process behind the trade as it started to look worse.
  4. Losing Bartlett has to be one the most exaggerated losses ever. We was horrible with us and good like one season after he left. And why is Ryan praised for the Span trade because he traded from a perceived area of strength(CF/OF) for an area of weakness (young power pitching) and yet Smith is still being slammed for doing the same thing. He traded from a perceived area of strength (SP) for a weakness (young power bat who happened to alos be a #1 overall pick, former #1 prospect, 2nd in ROY voting). The thinking behind both trades were the same and both failed miserably at the execution.
  5. Most of the issues being talked about have been talked about a good chunk of the season, certainly well before the last 10 games. I think everyone enjoyed the winning sure, but most were never blind to the fact that there is still little MLB quality and /or MLB proven talent on this team. We've been talking about catcher most of the season, shortstop most of the season, the bullpen most of the season, OF defense most of the season, etc. These problems still existed despite the winning.
  6. Yup. I remember looking at the 40 man roster last year on MLB.com roster listing and realizing how many were listed as OFs that weren't actually OFs. Nunez, Santana, Parmellee, Hermann and Colabello (dpending on if you think he belongs out there or not).
  7. Tulo's debut with his new team: 3-5, 2 2Bs, 1 HR. Congrats Tulo!
  8. If only this thread's title was more obvious as to the type of conversations that would be going on, and one could see the title and somehow avoid clicking on the thread because they knew they wouldn't like what they'd read. We really need titles of threads to be more obvious :-)
  9. Your post brings 2007 to mind. We just don't have a Luis Castillo to be traded while still in the playoff hunt while bringing no one in :-)
  10. I think a lot of people haven't been fooled by one amazing month and see that we've had a losing record in two of the first three months and July is trending that way too. They also see the issues with the bullpen, the shortstop position, the catcher position, and so on. If you think it's just about the recent losing, I think you haven't been paying much attention. Teams win and lose on the basis of talent. This team is lacking MLB ready quality talent. And the GM is responsible for the talent on the club.
  11. you don't think, when the times comes, he doesn't go with Anthony?
  12. you get that there's also the 4M buyout if they don't exercise the option year AND he still needs to get paid this year? So more like 55M left for less than 2 1/2 seasons
  13. to win 75 games they have to go 23-39. Last year they went 24-38 to finish the season.
  14. I don't think an xFIP of 3.78 is so good we should be overly skeptical he can maintain that. It's just not an outrageous xFIP. Just better than the others that were in the rotation at the time. And he's 25. I'd expect him to improve some as he continues his career as a starter. Unless they keep jacking him around in favor of the less talented veterans.
  15. Maybe when they showed their outrage they were being silly and looking at the huge discrepancy in talent between their Royals and our Twins and realized that the Twins now are nothing like the WS series teams of over 20 years ago (my son is married, already served a term in the army, just bought his first home and wasn't alive when we last won a WS) nor even like the team that had several division championships last decade.
  16. why isn't his walk rate sustainable? It's not outrageous like Hughes. Even if it goes up some, it's still very good. He's been improving that part of his game. And the HR part won't effect his xFIP because that is already adjusted for average HR.
  17. So happy for Hicks and the team.
  18. 'And Ricky Nolasco and Mike Pelfry are tied for 3rd best WAR for the year. Not sure WAR is the best argument for including May in the rotation.' Just shows how bad the rotation is and that Ervin Santana has been out half a season. If he hadn't, they'd be sitting #4 and #5. And if I had just used WAR, you'd have a point. I used FIP, xFIP, Ks per 9, BB per 9 too, and pointed out the extreme BABIP.
  19. well, he hasn't started for a month so I imagine he would still have the least amount of inning pitched. Sure can't work on that in the pen 1 inning at a time. and I don't really care too much for ERA which is dependent on so many things besides pitcher performance. For example, a BABIP of .340 when league average is what, around.290-.300? I'd rather judge a pitcher on what he can control.
  20. and yet May STILL has the most WAR of any pitcher who has graced the rotation this season. And his FIP (and xFIP) was the best of any starter in the rotation when he was moved along with having the most Ks per 9 IP and the 2nd least BB per 9 IP. I guess it's more important to have one extra less effective inning. and he's being wasted in the bullpen
  21. here's to hoping we don't even think about getting Reyes.
  22. if only he was actually playing shortstop. Ryan pushed to make sure Santana was the shortstop this season and Molitor continues to make it happen. (I remember that correctly, right? Ryan kept saying Santana, Molitor was saying they would compete and left the idea of Santana playing CF open. Or was it the other way around?
  23. Three very good prospects? That's a huge stretch. One perhaps and they got to salary dump too. And Escobar isn't our shortstop.
  24. I know this is sarcasm, but Terry wasn't even GM then, so we can't even count those. He DID trade Castillo while we still had an outside shot though so Casilla could be our 2B. Basically waiving the white flag two months early. But hey, must not have been the right time to actually go and get help instead of bailing. We certainly hadn't shown we had the makings of a playoff team, what with just having won the division the year before (and the two years before that). Certainly trading away Castillo, instead of going to get help, had no effect on moral on the team when he did that.
