  1. I'd still be happy with 75 wins. With the way they are playing and their remaining schedule I doubt we go 28-30 or better to finish the year.
  2. If May can be a quality #3 starter, to me that's more valuable than a bullpen arm. And I think a quality #3 pitcher is his floor.
  3. When talking about who to put in Milone's spot the Twins said Duffey, Berrios and Rodgers were considered. No mention of May. Hard to say they actually considered him when they don't mention him as someone they considered. Rhett is giving an excuse why, but not saying he was considered.
  4. When pushing for Dozier to be in the 3-hole, does it concern you Dozier is hitting .217 w/RISP this year and .243 w/ RISP for his career?
  5. @RhettBollinger Molitor said the Twins also considered Jose Berrios and Taylor Rogers, but that Tyler Duffey was the unanimous decision. Most ready now. This suggests when they moved May to the pen, they had no intention of putting him back this season, at least not while we were in contention, since they considered 3 pitchers to replace Milone and none of them were May, apparently.
  6. But yeah, there were plenty of experts saying it was fine he didn't really do anything. Of course, I wonder how many looked at his history of deadline moves and wondered whether it's more about being timid than anything else.
  7. I was watching MLB Network quite a bit at the deadline and the night before the deadline they were shocked, based on where we were in the standings, that they was barely a whisper about the Twins and then they chuckled the next day at the signing we had saying that, apparently, the Twins are a juggernaut and don't need help.
  8. I think many of us that were outraged at the time May was moved to the bullpen figured exactly the same thing, even after hearing/reading the plethora of excuses used to defend the move, many of which can be tossed aside.
  9. BTW, congrats to Duffey! Must be exciting time for him. Another youngster brought up!
  10. Maybe he does deserve it, but probably doesn't deserve it more than the guy who got booted to the pen earlier this season, Trevor may.
  11. I remember some of the reasons people gave when they defended the decision to put May in the bullpen. -He won't be there long. -He's only going down so they can showcase other pitchers for the trade deadline and will be back right after that. -He'll be back in the rotation as soon as one of the others gets hurt. We can knock these excuses off the possibly valid list.
  12. didn't you also blame it on the all star break in the same post? :-)
  13. No doubt it's hard, but it's hard for every GM, not just TR, yet as deals fly every year, he's 0-career on making an deal where one could even come close to saying 'wow, that was aggressive. that player could truly male a difference.' The biggest deal was when he bailed on his team by trading Castillo instead of trading for help during the 2007 trade deadline, but that was in a different direction. We don't get players to help us on a playoff run just because he tried. We also can't gauge whether or not he tried hard, at all. We can figure that he isn't aggressive enough because he's never done one in his many, many years of being a GM. Sports is a result oriented business, no points for trying. Doesn't mean anyone who takes him to task for being unable to get it done thinks it's easy or can't understand it's complex.
  14. Or that commandment was on the tablet Moses dropped.
  15. 'The twins play a lot of crappy teams down the stretch including a ton against the AL central which is pretty weak besides the Royals at this point. They definitely should be expected to go at least .500 the rest of the way.' 58 games left. These are against the teams who are winning the division and/or are serious playoff contenders: Tor: 4 NYY: 3 Bal: 4 Hou: 6 KCR:6 LAA: 4Then Then we have 5 games combined against TB and Texas who are both barely below .500. That's 32 serious games. This was written in an article on MLB.com on July 16th: 'Twins: Minnesota's remaining opponents have a combined .511 winning percentage, the highest among any team that currently has a winning record. The most grueling stretch for the Twins comes during a 16-game stretch beginning on Sept. 4. That's the day that Minnesota begins a nine-game road trip, starting with three games against the Astros followed by three against the division-leading Royals.' Yes, we've played some tough ones since that article was written, but it's still a rough schedule, including the part that is stated as being our most grueling stretch. With that info, and the fact we did practically nothing (if not exactly nothing) to improve our team at the deadline, not only do I NOT think the Twins should be expected to play .500 ball or better, we should be happy and pleasantly surprised if they do. And that's before mentioning how we've been playing recently or have played every month but May.
  16. Before tonight's win, according to Baseball Prospectus, our odds of making the playoffs sat at just under 18%. Toronto was over 50%. Baltimore over 20%. Angels over 70%, NYY, Houston and KC over 90%. There are 5 playoff spots. 'Postseason probabilities are courtesy of Baseball Prospectus and indicate each team's probability of winning the division or wild card, or any postseason berth. Probabilities are based on thousands of Monte Carlo simulations of the remaining season schedule incorporating each team's year-to-date run differential, current roster composition, playing time projections and remaining schedule.'
  17. 'I think this team is more than capable of playing above 500 to the end of the year, We've been below .500 in 3 of the 4 months played and our remaining schedule seems pretty rough. Gonna be extremely hard for this team to play above .500 to finish the season and we've been sliding down hard. Hope you are right.
  18. Quick question. Are you suggesting Maddon managed Jepsen? In any event, most people seem to suggest he'll be our 8th inning guy. Let's see what they do because, it seems, they really have little idea what they are doing with the pen except to say Perkins is the closer.
  19. Trying isn't doing. Offering a package TR and/or others think/say is competitive doesn't make it competitive. And, in the end, it isn't the same as offering a package that actually makes the other GM say yes. And of course he doesn't HAVE to be daring or aggressive because we are competitive this year or any competitive year because, clearly, that's exactly the case.
  20. My point was that our most glaring problem is allowing inherited runners to score. If we make him our 8th inning guy (if he only starts the eight inning) we aren't addressing our biggest problem with the bullpen. And by the looks of it, he shouldn't be brought in with inherited runners. And yes, not all inherited runners are the same. That can be said about every reliever.
  21. My comment wasn't just directed at you. It's why I didn't quote you. It's a pretty telling trend, IMO. IMO, he is just not the type of GM that will ever make big moves at the deadline, whether it's the right time or not. Because he hasn't. Too many people are saying he didn't go for it because now wasn't the right time. Fine, but do we know that is the actual reason why he didn't go for it, or is it because it just isn't his nature to do so and, coincidentally, it happens to not be the time? I think his history makes the answer pretty clear.
  22. To me, one of the biggest issues with our team is the high % of inherited runners allowed to score by our bullpen and the overall amount we've allowed to score. When we talk about improving our bullpen, it seems that we should be looking to improve that. Signing a guy who has allowed 43% this year and 35% last year, when our team this year has allowed 34%, makes me wonder how much of an improvement it really is. Can we only bring him in without guys on bases?
  23. When has Ryan ever gone for it at teh trade dealine? Are we saying from 2001-2007 it was never the right time to go for it? No, we don't know what kind of effort he put in, but others put effort in and actually got stuff done. And in markets like ours with farm systems comparable or worse than ours
  24. Were there any prospects ranked as high as those three in any of the trades? One right? For Price? Why would WE have to do that (especially for a guy like Upton and a guy slumping like Lucroy)?
  25. Most of the supposed experts say that Colorado took Reyes only because they didn't want to send money with Tulo and Hawkins. It was a salary dump Colorado had to eat. Yes, they may get something else for him if/when they trade him, but that was a condition of Toronto, not a plus for Colorado.
